Background / History
Gaoye City’s name derives from the Gao and Ye surnames. For roughly a century, the Gao and Ye Families formed the city’s entrenched foundation, while the Huang Family rose to comparable prominence within the previous fifty years. The Three Great Families controlled businesses, resources, and martial experts in the inner city, making them the city’s true rulers. Below them were outer-city martial halls such as Panshi Fist Academy, Flowing Cloud Martial Hall, and Mountain Severing Sect, followed by gangs that preyed on civilians. 9
The city was sharply divided between wealthy inner-city residents and struggling outer-city commoners. Its outer districts included Qing Shi Alley, Bluestone Alley, the southern slums, Ci'an Ward, and the South–West District junction; the inner city housed the great families and their interests. 3 4 53 81 105
Its balance began to collapse after Huang Yao disappeared and the Huang Family’s hired Entering Force expert, Situ Ming, was killed outside the city. The Huang Family diverted its strength into investigations, creating an opening for the Black Wind Bandits and the Incense God Cult to expand their activities. 53 79 81
The crisis culminated in a coordinated assault: Black Wind Bandits besieged the city from outside while the Incense God Cult fomented unrest within. Huang Chengzong secretly intended to exploit both groups to destroy the Gao and Ye Families and take control of Gaoye City. 89 90 95
Wang Yuan’s intervention ended the struggle. He defeated Yuan Gang, killed Ye Xiong and Huang Chengzong’s allied force, and left Gao Shiqing gravely wounded. Gao Shiqing later died of those injuries and the collapse of his family’s position. The Three Great Families’ century-long dominance was thereby dismantled. 104 107 115
Following the upheaval, Wang Yuan placed the city under his authority and entrusted Zheng Shan with stabilization.
