While the Absolute Ability User Project was still on hold, Luo Yifang spent several days painstakingly studying in the basement, aside from going out to deal with Misaka 9982's food situation. In the end, he discovered that Azeroth's magic simply could not be used here!
"Are you screwing with me?!" Luo Yifang threw the manual onto the floor, on the verge of exploding.
"Eh, what exactly is going on?" Paqi frowned. "That shouldn't be possible. Why can't it be used?"
"Because this world doesn't have arcane power or elements at all!" Luo Yifang felt he had to be insane to believe the suggestion Paqi had made.
"No, no, no, that's not the reason. Every world has those things; it's just a matter of whether they're obvious or not." Paqi dismissed that explanation. "Could the problem be you?"
"By the standards written there, I'm absolutely a once-in-a-generation arcane genius, okay?!" Luo Yifang said indignantly. That was true enough. With Vector Manipulation and Energy Absorption, he was exceptionally sensitive to the movement of all energy. The issues ordinary mages had with controlling energy were no issue at all for him. The greatest hurdle to learning magic simply did not exist for Luo Yifang.
"Then that really is strange. Why won't it work?" Paqi wondered. "But if it truly can't be done, then we'll have to solve it with scientific methods."
"Why didn't you say that earlier?!"
"Oh, first find a black hole, then walk into it and use the extremely distorted time and space inside to fuse the materials."
"Forget it! I don't think I'm strong enough to survive inside a black hole! We can talk again when I reach Level 6!" After hearing that absurd idea, Luo Yifang declared he was out.
"Fine, there's no solution for now. Put SCP-4972 away first, and we'll come back to it once I think of another method." Paqi also knew throwing Luo Yifang into a black hole was unrealistic. "Anyway, you've more or less finished the work on the scientific side. If the remaining half really can't be done, you can make do with this thing. It's just a little unstable."
Faced with the current deadlock, Luo Yifang had no better ideas. He could only do as Paqi said, since he had no way to tackle the other half of the magical technology right now.
Just as Luo Yifang was about to gather up the materials scattered across the floor and had stepped out of the basement, a ringing phone interrupted him. He took out his phone. "Hello?"
A massive explosion came through the phone. After a brief silence, Hatsuharu's panicked voice rang out. "Senior Yifang! Is that you?!"
"What happened, Hatsuharu?" That explosion had made Luo Yifang realize that Hatsuharu was in a very dangerous situation.
"Senior, thank goodness, I finally got through to you!" Hatsuharu sounded like she was about to cry. She had been trying to call for a long time, but there had been no signal. Over there, Kuroko and Misaka Mikoto were both locked in a difficult battle.
"Don't panic, Hatsuharu. Tell me slowly." Luo Yifang was completely confused. Could Kakine Teitoku have gone to cause trouble for them?
"Senior, we were attacked by a monster! Senior Misaka and Shirai-san are fighting it!"
A monster? Don't tell me it was another visitor from another world? Was this happening that often? Or was it... the AIM Diffusion Virus?
The timeline had already become extremely chaotic. Misaka 9982 had clearly appeared far earlier than she should have, and Luo Yifang had no idea what Misaka Mikoto and the others had encountered.
"Senior, bzzz, Senior?" The signal on Hatsuharu's end seemed to be suffering interference, and her voice became unstable. She understood that this was not the time to explain in detail, so she immediately sent Luo Yifang her coordinates.
This location... on a highway at the outskirts of Academy City? Then it was the AIM Diffusion Virus.
Luo Yifang let out a long breath and relaxed. Since it was the AIM Diffusion Virus, Misaka Mikoto and the others were not in any serious danger. Still, since Hatsuharu had called him for help, he had to go take a look.
"I think you just want to go show off."
Luo Yifang stumbled and nearly fell to the ground. Paqi really never let him have a moment's peace. Without another word, he adjusted his direction, then with a biu, shot up from the ground and soared into the sky.
"Damn it... this thing..." Misaka Mikoto hid behind a shattered slab of concrete, considering her options.
Although none of the abilities used by the monster before her were particularly powerful, its lack of quality was fully compensated for by quantity. Since the battle began, it had used an unknown number of bizarre abilities.
The monster could attack without restraint, but Misaka Mikoto had to consider the safety of the people around her and did not dare unleash her full power. As one side weakened and the other gained ground, Misaka Mikoto had actually been temporarily suppressed.
A moment later, Misaka Mikoto made her decision. She had to lure this monster farther away!
But the instant that thought arose, just as Misaka Mikoto was about to leave cover and draw it away, a protruding clump of earth suddenly tripped her, sending her crashing to the ground.
This is bad!
Misaka Mikoto tried to get back up quickly, only to find that the ground around her had suddenly turned viscous. The AIM Diffusion Virus had used its ability to manipulate the earth beneath her feet. Now both her hands and feet were pinned to the ground, making it difficult for her to break free.
Having succeeded, the AIM Diffusion Virus let out a shriek. Countless ice spikes, beams of light, bombs, and all manner of abilities almost instantly engulfed Misaka Mikoto.
Kuroko was still nearby, evacuating people. When she saw Misaka Mikoto's predicament, the distance between them was simply too great for her to cross in time. She could only watch helplessly as Misaka Mikoto was swallowed by the light of the explosion.
"Onee-sama!"
Ignoring the exhaustion in her body, Kuroko focused her mind and teleported several times in succession, arriving at the site of the explosion without any regard for exposing herself to the AIM Diffusion Virus's attack range.
"Onee-sama?! Cough, cough... Onee-sama?!" Though the smoke made her cough violently, Kuroko continued searching steadfastly for Misaka Mikoto.
But how could the AIM Diffusion Virus possibly let this chance go? A relentless barrage of abilities once again covered the place where the two of them stood. In that instant, Kuroko felt both the bone-piercing chill of ice spikes and the scorching heat of explosions at the same time.
The security officers still on the overpass immediately opened fire to suppress the AIM Diffusion Virus, buying space for the people on the other side preparing to launch a rescue. Hatsuharu, meanwhile, collapsed directly onto the ground.
"Whoosh!!!!"
A sudden gale swept away the haze blanketing the scene, and with it the grief and gloom in everyone's hearts.
A white-haired, red-eyed boy stood before the completely unharmed Misaka Mikoto and Kuroko. He looked calmly at the AIM Diffusion Virus floating in the air and said—
"This way is Accelerator-only!"
