Background / History

Misaka first appears stopping three criminal espers with ease. Afterward, she realizes that the boy she had intended to rescue—Luo Yifang—has already left without acknowledging her intervention, which leaves her irritated and curious. 5

She encounters Luo again when he blocks and redirects her Railgun. His ability to withstand her strongest attack makes him one of the few people in Academy City she considers genuinely dangerous, while also triggering her competitive desire to challenge him. 20 21 Their subsequent riverbank duel confirms the gap between them: her electricity, Railgun, magnetic weapons, and close-range charge all fail to overcome him. 26

Her involvement with the Absolute Ability User Project stems from her determination to protect the Misaka Sisters. Luo gives her partial information about the project, though his evasiveness and an accidentally blank USB drive initially deepen her distrust of him. 36 37 After witnessing Kakine Teitoku’s death, she is shaken by the conflict between her belief in legal judgment and her awareness of his crimes. 53

A spacetime overlap later forces memories from another version of herself into her mind. She remembers that self’s futile attempts to stop the project, her despair, and her death while trying to save the Sisters. 54 55

Misaka is a Tokiwadai student who commonly wears her summer school uniform. Electrical arcs visibly flicker around her hair and body when she is agitated or preparing to fight. 5 26

Misaka is competitive, stubborn, and unwilling to concede defeat even when she recognizes that an opponent is overwhelmingly stronger. During her duel with Luo, she continues fighting after identifying how hopelessly difficult it is to overcome his ability. 26

She is strongly protective of others, particularly the Misaka Sisters and endangered children. She accepts responsibility for tragedies around her too readily, grieving over the Sisters and attempting to personally avenge them. 51 65 Her moral convictions also leave her disturbed by Luo’s execution of Kakine, despite acknowledging Kakine’s atrocities. 53

Behind her outward toughness, Misaka struggles with helplessness, fear of her own escalating power, and the pressure of being Academy City’s third-ranked esper. Luo’s support gives her a sense of safety she had lacked while facing the city’s darkness alone. 345 373

After admitting her feelings for Luo, Misaka suddenly attacks him and flees. Her abilities spiral into a lightning storm that engulfs Academy Garden, while an unknown entity takes control of her body and attempts to push her toward Level 6. 345 346 347

Luo evacuates civilians, contains the storm, and moves Misaka to the ocean rather than forcibly suppressing her. He then guides her continuing power growth and sends her storm to another world, where she can stabilize safely. 347 349 350

Jura Great Forest

Misaka awakens in Rimuru’s world and agrees to protect the village. There, she discovers that her abilities have changed: her Railgun becomes vastly stronger, her calculations become instinctive, and her physical capabilities exceed normal human limits. 351 354 355 357
