Nature and Awakening
A martial soul is the defining supernatural manifestation of a Soul Master. Every child on Douluo Continent awakens one at approximately six years old, but an awakened martial soul alone does not permit cultivation: the child must possess at least half a level of Soul Power. Those without Soul Power remain ordinary people regardless of their martial soul. 1
Awakenings are conducted through a formation of unusual stones energized by a Soul Master. The child uses their thoughts to release the martial soul, then places a hand on a Crystal Ball to test for Soul Power. 7 8
Martial souls vary drastically in inherent quality, utility, and combat potential. Their strength can affect a Soul Master’s starting point, cultivation rate, offensive advantages, and future prospects; however, compatible abilities, Soul Rings, strategy, and martial-soul counters can alter an apparent disadvantage. 21 78 211
Classification
| Category | Description | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Beast Martial Soul | A martial soul based on a beast. These are comparatively rare and are valued for their natural combat, offense, and defense potential. | Lone Wolf, Fire Dragon, Hell Spirit Cat, Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor 4 7 104 123 |
| Tool Spirit | A broad category encompassing objects, plants, food, farming implements, and other non-beast manifestations. | Sickle, Blue Silver Grass, Chicken Blood Vine, Hundred Treasures Glazed Pagoda 7 8 32 |
| Mutated Beast Spirit | A rarer variation of Beast Martial Soul. Mutations can be advantageous or flawed. | Yu Xiaogang’s Luo Sanpao is described as a flawed mutated Beast Martial Soul. 7 |

| Plant-type martial soul | A Tool Spirit based on plant life, capable of functions including binding, healing, poison, and battlefield control. | Chicken Blood Vine, Blue Silver Grass, Snow Orchid 8 30 73 |
Soul Rings and Spirit Skills
Soul Rings are the primary means by which martial souls gain spirit skills. Their abilities may be offensive, supportive, defensive, or otherwise specialized. 21
- A ten-year Soul Ring is represented by white, while a hundred-year Soul Ring is yellow. 4
- A red Soul Ring represents a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Ring and is regarded as exceptionally rare and dangerous to absorb. 30 78
- Soul Ring compatibility matters; attempting an unsuitable absorption can result in failure, crippling injury, or death. 23 24
- A Plant Martial Soul is not inherently restricted to plant-type Soul Rings. Wang Xiao considers compatible beast rings viable where their traits align, citing the shared characteristics of Blue Silver Grass and the Mandala Snake. 22 25
- Martial souls can counter one another. A weaker martial soul may become decisive against a naturally restrained opponent. 211 363
Martial Soul Avatar
A Martial Soul Avatar is a seventh-ring ability that merges the Soul Master with their martial soul’s true form. It substantially improves all attributes and allows both offense and defense to be performed through the avatar. 50
- Wang Xiao uses the Thunder God Martial Soul Avatar against Tang Hao’s Clear Sky Hammer Avatar. 294
- His Twelve-Winged Holy Angel Avatar manifests when the angel martial soul overlaps with his body. 512
- The Humanoid Martial Soul can become a tangible giant nearly nine meters tall. 415
Martial Soul Fusion Skill
A Martial Soul Fusion Skill combines two or more martial souls for power beyond their separate capabilities. Standard fusion skills commonly involve multiple people and can exceed 200% of the users’ combined power. 295
- Wang Xiao combines his Twelve-Winged Fallen Angel, Twelve-Winged Holy Angel, and physical body into a Holy Twelve-Winged Angel form. 295
- His Twelve-Winged Holy Angel and purple Humanoid Martial Soul later merge into the Twenty-Four-Winged Holy Gold Angel Martial Soul Avatar. 512 513
