Background

Voldemort rose from Tom Riddle into the Dark Lord and led the Death Eaters during a period that left the British wizarding world deeply traumatized. His followers included loyalists, opportunists, pure-blood political factions, and amoral Dark wizards drawn to the protection and profit offered by his power 19.

His pursuit of dominance was driven by more than pure-blood ideology. He believed Muggle civilization was advancing at a rate that wizarding society could not match, and concluded that wizards would eventually be overwhelmed unless he started a war and imposed wizard rule first 47. He also refused to return to the powerlessness of his orphanage origins, preferring to “wear a crown and die” as a Dark Lord rather than live humbly 47.

After his fall following the prophecy surrounding Harry Potter, Voldemort survived through Horcruxes. He spent roughly ten years in Albania before returning to Britain in a weakened state, concealing himself through Quirrell while seeking the Philosopher’s Stone and a route back to power 19 36.
