Background / History

Guo Yuan studied in Japan after refusing his father Guo Hai's plan for him to pursue medicine. While abroad, he was struck on the head by a falling object and remained unconscious for two days; afterward, he retained memories belonging to an older parallel-world version of himself—a programmer and mystery-novel commentator. Those memories included code, mystery plots, and writing techniques. 1

He used those memories to recreate The Locked Room Collector, which became a major success and won Japan's Edogawa Ranpo Award. His later novel, White Night Walk, also became popular, making him known in both Japan and China. 1

After receiving his bachelor's degree, Guo Yuan returned to China rather than completing the academic and medical path his father expected. The resulting conflict led him to buy his own apartment and resolve not to return home until he had achieved wealth and social standing. 1
