Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Soul Beast (魂兽) |
| Species/Race | A collective category encompassing animal- and plant-type lifeforms with Soul Power; theoretically, any organic matter can become a Soul Beast 676. |
| Occupation/Role | Sources of Soul Rings, Soul Bones, medicinal ingredients, and other materials used by human Soul Masters 27 112 673. |
| Status | By the later story, every Soul Beast on Douluo Star that has reached hundred-thousand-year cultivation has entered the small worlds belonging to the Four Spirits of Heaven to strengthen its bloodline and cultivation 1008. |
Power Progression
- Soul Beast advancement is measured in cultivation years, but this does not always equal elapsed lifespan: Ah Yin restores hundred-thousand-year cultivation in less than half a year through devouring 955.
- The following table records explicit advancements by a Soul Beast, rather than the cultivation levels of unrelated individuals.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ten-thousand-year Dark Blue Silver Emperor | 955 | Ah Yin advances from the thousand-year level by consuming Soul Beast corpses through her roots. Further ten-thousand-year increases require progressively more nourishment. |
| Hundred-thousand-year Dark Blue Silver Emperor | 955 | Ah Yin restores her former cultivation in less than half a year. Her remaining hundred-thousand-year foundation helps her retrace her previous growth, and she takes human form again. |
| 130,000-year cultivation | 957 | Ah Yin absorbs a second Soul Bone while keeping it separate from her existing one, increasing her endurance and strengthening her Devouring ability. |
Cultivation & Biology
Cultivation Categories
| Category | Documented characteristics or examples |
|---|---|
| Ten-year | A ten-year Parasitic Fungus Demon can parasitize insect-type Soul Beasts, obtaining nourishment and protection from its host 673. |
| Hundred-year | The four-hundred-year Green Pouch Beast supplies Ye Wen’s first Soul Ring and the Space of Life skill 8. |
| Thousand-year | Ordinary Soul Beasts in the Great Star Dou Forest’s outer region reach roughly three or four thousand years 26. |
| Ten-thousand-year | Absorbing their Soul Rings involves a spiritual confrontation with the beast’s soul. A 40,000-year Ironclad Rhinoceros King is compared to a mid-level Soul Saint 31 112 127. |
| Hundred-thousand-year | Beasts at this level can take human form. Their Soul Rings contain immense energy and a complete soul, making absorption dangerous even for newly advanced Titled Douluos 721 970. |
| Ferocious Beast | The 200,000-year Multi-Eyed Squid Emperor is identified as a ferocious beast. Higher cultivation also brings Heavenly Tribulations: a 500,000-year beast faces its 600,000-year tribulation 97 126. |
| Million-year | Sky Dream Ice Silkworm introduces himself as a million-year Soul Beast and the holder of Douluo Continent’s longevity record, despite lacking the intimidating strength expected of such an age 426. |
Bloodlines & Mutation
- Bloodline determines potential. Each bloodline evolution allows a Soul Beast to cultivate further, explaining why beasts risk their lives for opportunities to evolve 96.
- Cultivation age is not a fixed combat ranking. A thousand-year Golden Ao Dragon Turtle can rival some ordinary five-thousand-year beasts; a ten-thousand-year Mutated Twin-Headed Fire Phoenix can rival a Titled Douluo 176 847.
- Advanced cultivation can reveal inherited power. Some Soul Beasts undergo ancestral reversion and recover part of a Divine Beast’s inheritance 970.
- Dragon bloodlines have an internal hierarchy. Dragon Clan Soul Beasts created by the Dragon God remain below the Nine Dragon Kings and Golden and Silver Dragon Kings, who received portions of his own origin 824.
- Mutations can spread through influence. Ordinary Blue Silver Grass becomes Dark Blue Silver Grass after exposure to the mutated aura of a higher-ranked Soul Beast 954.
- Strength can be assessed through aura. Soul Beasts judge one another by their auras rather than the external features humans commonly use 40.
Plant-Type Life Cycles
- Blue Silver Grass below ten-thousand-year cultivation has weak spiritual power but no self-awareness. Repeated cycles of death and rebirth strengthen its life origin 28.
- Near death, plant-type Soul Beasts can condense their original bloodline into a seed. The resulting life inherits the predecessor’s memories and a stronger origin, but is not considered the same individual 68.
- The Blue Silver Grass clan possesses an exceptionally old inheritance that reaches back to the Dragon God’s era 956.
Abilities & Skills
Species Talents
| Talent | Example | Applications and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Life Force activation | Green Pouch Beast | Regurgitates eaten Blue Silver Grass after awakening its Life Force. The material distracts attacking Soul Beasts, allowing escape; the beast has no offensive abilities 6 8. |
| Earth and gravity control | Great Strength Vajra Bear | Possesses strength and defense alongside an understanding of earth and gravity. Its Great Strength Bear and Vajra Bear subspecies specialize in strength and defense respectively 28. |
| Parasitism | Parasitic Fungus Demon | Strengthens an insect host and suppresses its response to pain. When the fungus advances to another age bracket, it changes hosts and drains the former host to death 673. |
| Healing and enhancement | Emerald Swan | Heals wounds and amplifies allied beasts. Its lack of offensive power is offset by its value to other intelligent Soul Beasts 551. |
| Spiritual attacks | Multi-Eyed Squid Emperor | Combines physical power with an innate affinity for Spiritual Power and a powerful Soul Shock attack 97 98. |
| Slowing domain | Sky Azure Bull Python | Its Slow Field slows attacks entering the domain, giving it time to evade even Sword Douluo’s attacks 224. |
| Mass attraction | Evil Fragrant Taro | Its bloom can provoke large-scale Beast Tides; paste made from it attracts beasts seeking bloodline evolution 68 96. |
| Devouring | Dark Blue Silver Emperor | Pierces and consumes Soul Beast corpses through rapidly multiplying roots, converting them into accelerated cultivation growth 955. |
Human Transformation
- Hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts can take human form and cultivate anew without entirely losing their former cultivation 721.
- Their original Soul Power remains dormant within the body and can be used to independently condense Soul Rings before reaching Soul Saint 6 721.
- Soul Douluos can detect the discrepancy between weak newly cultivated Soul Power and powerful dormant cultivation through careful observation 721.
- Titled Douluos can detect that discrepancy when a nearby transformed Soul Beast uses Soul Power, even without close scrutiny 721.
- Taking human form allows participation in human society: Ah Yin awakens a Martial Soul through an orphanage and enters school as a work-study student 3.
Sacrifice
- After reaching sufficient cultivation beyond ten thousand years, Soul Beasts can use the world’s laws to perform Sacrifice 77.
- Sacrifice allows a recipient to absorb a Soul Ring beyond their normal level and guarantees a Soul Bone 77.
- It transfers Soul Power as well as a Soul Ring and Soul Bone, potentially raising the recipient’s cultivation through several levels 858.
- A hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast’s soul can remain in the bestowed Soul Ring, the Soul Bone, or its original body. A soul residing in the ring produces a Phantom Image rather than only sun-like markings 858.
- The eighty-five-thousand-year Blue Silver King agrees to sacrifice after securing Ye Wen’s promise to protect its interests and help it recover and evolve 858 859 862.
Soul Bones
- Soul Bones improve a Soul Master’s physique and provide additional Soul Skills, but ordinary drops are rare. Beasts closer to hundred-thousand-year cultivation are more likely to produce them 112.
- Their retained soul fragments allow active Soul Power to persist for thousands or tens of thousands of years. Without that vitality, the bones become fragile dead objects 128.
- For Soul Beasts themselves, Soul Bones can function similarly to human Soul Cores. Ah Yin’s separate second bone strengthens her abilities rather than merging with the first 957.
Habitats & Ecology
| Habitat | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Artificial Soul Hunting Forests | Managed hunting grounds requiring authorized passes. Their vegetation is less dense than the Great Star Dou Forest’s, and cleared paths run through them 6 175. |
| Great Star Dou Forest | The continent’s largest Soul Beast forest, with the greatest number and variety of beasts. Its outer region contains lower-age beasts, while the Mixed Zone contains older hunting targets 26 112 676. |
| Sunset Forest | Home to varied Soul Beasts, including the Evil Fragrant Taro responsible for a major Beast Tide and a rare Mutated Twin-Headed Fire Phoenix 67 68 847. |
| Extreme North Ice Plains | A dangerous region inhabited by Ice Silkworms and Ultimate Ice beasts such as Ice Jade Scorpions. Most Soul Masters who encounter the latter die 18 506. |
| Deep sea | Contains numerous hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts and ferocious beasts, many hidden in lightless depths that require a knowledgeable guide to navigate 96. |
| Blood River, City of Slaughter | Difficult-to-hunt beasts accumulate because the resident Fallen Soul Masters have little incentive to attack them 262. |
| Four Spirits of Heaven’s small worlds | Later destinations for Douluo Star’s hundred-thousand-year beasts, where they strengthen their bloodlines and cultivation 1008. |
- Most animal-type Soul Beasts move within established activity ranges; entering unfamiliar territory risks encounters with stronger beasts 679.
- Nocturnal Soul Beasts make forests especially dangerous to humans after dark 9.
- Pack behavior can compensate for individual limitations. A Blazing Wolf pack led by a ten-thousand-year king is dangerous enough that even a Soul Saint must keep its distance 13.
- Ecological relationships are not exclusively predatory: intelligent beasts avoid attacking Emerald Swans because they may later need their healing 551.
- The classification Evil Soul Beast is questioned in the story. Scholars reject that label for the attribute-less Parasitic Demon Fungus, while Ye Wen doubts that the Man Faced Demon Spider’s devouring alone justifies its reputation 676 955.
Relations with Humans
Soul Ring Hunting
- Human Soul Masters absorb cultivation extracted from dead Soul Beasts through their Soul Rings 26.
- Matching a beast’s species or attributes to a Martial Soul can strengthen that Martial Soul’s origin. Ye Wen advocates wolf-type rings for wolf Martial Souls and bear-type rings for bear Martial Souls 59.
- The resulting Soul Skill is not guaranteed; even a carefully chosen beast can provide an unexpected skill 9 479 765.
- Powerful Soul Rings pose both physical and spiritual risks. Defeated remnant souls can nourish the recipient’s spiritual world, but exceptionally resilient souls may threaten possession 31 127.
- A Soul Beast’s corpse also has economic value: fur, flesh, blood, and bones can be processed into useful products 27.
Conservation & Exploitation
- Medicinal demand drives the Parasitic Fungus Demon toward endangerment. Hunters pursue it for profit rather than Soul Rings, and newer beginner guides remove information about it 675 676.
- Ye Wen prevents fortress soldiers from slaughtering the beasts incapacitated during the Sunset Forest Beast Tide 67.
- He teaches that humans depend on Soul Beasts for the Soul Master profession, while Soul Beasts could live without humans. His hunting lessons include preserving plant bloodlines by replanting branches 175.
- Relations also include negotiation and trade. Ye Wen proposes continental trade with the intelligent, half-human and half-Soul Beast Mermaid Race despite its general distrust of humans 96.
Background / History
The account of the Soul Master system’s origins describes gods reshaping Martial Soul classifications to encourage humanity’s suppression and slaughter of Soul Beasts. Early humans initially survived battles through offensive Soul Tools; discovering Martial Souls and the rings emerging from dead beasts then began the Soul Master era 239.
An ancient legend attributes the prohibition on Soul Beast godhood to the fallen Dragon God, who allegedly barred their ascension until a new Dragon God succeeded him. Ye Wen explains this restriction to the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King and later confronts Di Tian, whose plan to gain faith through a Beast Tide cannot overcome the prohibition on Douluo Star 139 225.
Ye Wen subsequently pursues alternatives to continued hunting. He plans to help selected ferocious beasts take human form and become gods gradually to avoid detection, with Huo Yu’er eventually leading the Extreme North’s Beast Gods to preserve balance between humans and Soul Beasts 558. In a later Divine Beast Plan, he offers godhood to the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King and his family in exchange for loyalty, then orders the king to gather hundred-thousand-year beasts for their bloodline potential 970.
By the later story, Ye Wen’s policies have moved all of Douluo Star’s hundred-thousand-year beasts into the Four Spirits of Heaven’s small worlds. Their departure leaves the Great Star Dou Forest’s core region occupied by powerful ten-thousand-year Soul Beasts instead 1008.
