At this point on the European battlefield, one side held an absolute advantage.
More than half of the European continent was under Hitler's control. Allied forces had been unable to break through their defensive perimeter, and the emergence of HYDRA forces had greatly delayed the Allied offensive, causing heavy casualties.
Although Chen Mo had not equipped the troops with energy weapons, they still wielded HYDRA's original mechanized equipment.
Yet with heavy armored weapons such as gigantic tanks and Armored Cars that surpassed the Allies' current technological level, along with elite HYDRA soldiers of unwavering faith who feared no death, they still maintained absolute suppression over the Allies in local engagements.
Fortunately, the formidable HYDRA forces were limited in number. Each of the several bases controlled by Hitler's side had fewer than five hundred troops, making it impossible for them to alter the overall course of the war.
Still, the elite HYDRA troops affected local battle conditions. Whenever Allied forces encountered them, they suffered grievous casualties.
After Chen Mo led his team there, the situation changed again.
In the film, the greatest reason Steve was able to lead the Howling Commandos in easily wiping out HYDRA bases was Steve's own tremendous strength.
With Chen Mo's formidable power far surpassing Steve's, the bases he had abandoned were even more fragile, capable of being wiped out with a wave of his hand.
It was Chen Mo's first time truly taking the field and killing enemies. His blood boiled with excitement, and he thoroughly enjoyed the entire battle. For the first time, he could cast off all restraints and unleash all his strength without reservation. Fighting felt utterly exhilarating.
Every bullet that struck his shield made his heart race, bringing incomparable excitement and thrill.
Amid the fierce battles, Chen Mo's mind was constantly tempered, and his entire bearing underwent an immense change.
As the killing continued, Chen Mo's murderous aura grew heavier, his gaze sharper, and his expression colder. Yet he did not lose himself in slaughter. In battle, his mind remained exceptionally calm. With every person he killed, his heart became more tranquil and clear.
Tempered by the battlefield, Chen Mo's mental power began growing once more.
Heroes truly emerged in troubled times.
Only on the battlefield could the mind receive its finest tempering, allowing mental power to continuously improve.
In times of peace, special abilities were difficult to awaken. Even if someone like Chen Mo awakened an ability through a fortunate coincidence, it would be difficult to make significant further progress, because only battles between life and death were the best way to improve one's abilities.
Chen Mo grew increasingly eager for battle. Whenever he discovered traces of HYDRA forces, he immediately led his team there. One HYDRA camp and stronghold after another was wiped out by Chen Mo's team.
Through battle after battle, Chen Mo steadily accumulated real combat experience. His fighting techniques shed their excess and retained their essence, while his moves were constantly refined through actual combat. His fighting became increasingly swift and violent, with astonishing destructive power.
However, Chen Mo did not blindly fight head-on. He still preferred to ambush and assassinate, infiltrate and sabotage first, then engage openly after eliminating the threats. Unless necessary, he would not launch a direct frontal assault.
In truth, aside from personal preference, it made little difference to him how he fought. A frontal assault was merely somewhat more troublesome. With his shield in hand, he did not fear the enemy's hail of bullets.
But although the soldiers under his Special Operations Team were all elite troops, they were ultimately ordinary people. A frontal assault could easily cause casualties, so Chen Mo usually tore through the enemy's defenses alone before having the Special Operations Team advance to support him.
Several months passed quickly in battle. It was now October 1943, and Chen Mo had been in this world for nearly two years.
Within a dense forest of towering trees stood a vast, heavily guarded base hidden from view.
Continuous tall and sturdy walls protected the entire base, and the heavily guarded gate was the only passage into it.
Suddenly, a tall, agile figure burst from the forest at high speed.
Dressed in an all-black combat suit, Chen Mo held a gun in one hand and a shield in the other as he launched an assault on the HYDRA base.
The gun in his hand fired repeatedly. The unprepared HYDRA soldiers at the entrance fell one after another with the gunshots, every bullet striking a vital point.
The other HYDRA soldiers also noticed Chen Mo's sudden appearance and immediately launched a fierce counterattack.
Raising his shield to block the bullets flying toward him, Chen Mo holstered his pistol at his thigh, took a grenade from his waist, pulled the pin, and hurled it directly into the HYDRA soldiers over a hundred meters away.
Boom!
With a violent explosion, a large open area was instantly cleared at the gate, and the incoming bullets also briefly slowed.
Howard hadn't been bragging after all. The high-explosive grenades he provided really were powerful enough.
Taking advantage of the lull in the enemy's firepower, Chen Mo immediately lowered his shield and unleashed his full speed. At Chen Mo's limit, he crossed more than a hundred meters and charged through the base gate in only a few seconds.
The nearby HYDRA soldiers had barely gathered when Chen Mo was already before them. Before they could fire, Chen Mo gripped his shield with both hands and slammed directly into the crowd.
Chen Mo was like a charging war machine. Every HYDRA soldier standing before him was sent flying, hurled into the air with sunken chests and ruptured organs, dead before they even hit the ground.
Because Chen Mo had particularly enjoyed sneaking in for assassinations and sabotage in previous battles, the HYDRA soldiers had become jumpy at every rustle of grass. Their defenses were tight day and night, leaving Chen Mo no choice but to abandon a surprise attack this time and launch a frontal assault.
However, before absolute strength, even the strongest defenses could be easily torn apart.
Taking advantage of the lull in fire caused by the explosion, Chen Mo charged into the mass of soldiers. No longer using his pistol, he reached behind his back and drew the longsword strapped there—the King's Sword he had obtained by chance in a Norwegian church.
Chen Mo swung his shield in his left hand, sending several people beside him flying. A cold glint flashed in his eyes as the longsword in his right hand swept horizontally. Its silver-bright blade traced a long arc, cleaving several HYDRA soldiers, guns and all, into two.
Chilling sword light danced in every direction as spurting blood splashed through the air, setting off Chen Mo's cold face filled with killing intent and making all who saw it tremble.
Already incomparably sharp, the King's Sword became utterly unstoppable under Chen Mo's immense strength. It cut through everything it touched with irresistible force; nothing could withstand a single strike from Chen Mo.
Most of the bullets fired by the HYDRA soldiers were blocked by Chen Mo's shield. Even when the barrage covered his whole body and he could not protect every part of himself, the bullets could not harm him in the slightest.
Every bullet that struck Chen Mo was directly deflected, leaving only a small hole in his clothing and exposing a glimpse of silvery white beneath.
Although bulletproof vest technology was not yet advanced at the time, bulletproof steel plates already existed. Chen Mo had taken the specialized bulletproof steel plates originally used on Armored Cars and helicopters and turned them into a full suit of body armor beneath his combat uniform. The bulletproof plates covering nearly his entire body were indeed quite heavy, but with Chen Mo's extraordinary strength and endurance, that weight did not affect his combat ability at all.
Chen Mo only needed to use his shield to block bullets aimed at his head and more powerful attacks such as anti-aircraft guns.
In fact, with Chen Mo's current reactions and agility, he could already dodge bullets. But battlefield firepower was too dense, and dodging took too much time, so during frontal assaults, Chen Mo simply relied on his shield and Bulletproof Armor to withstand the attacks. Given his physical strength, even the impact of being shot could not make him feel pain, much less hinder his movements.
Immersed in battle, Chen Mo wore a cold expression. Every swing of his longsword brought a spray of blood and took several lives. In the blink of an eye, he had slaughtered every HYDRA soldier around him. Severed limbs and damaged firearms littered the ground, while spilled blood dyed the entire area around him red.
Suddenly, Chen Mo sharply turned his head, his piercing gaze sweeping forward.
