There was no Heavenly Marriage yet, but that did not mean there was no such thing as Dao companions. Otherwise, how would the countless races reproduce?
The merit of Heavenly Marriage lay in establishing its rules and rituals, giving later generations a precedent to follow instead of having people simply get together whenever they felt like it!
