Yuanshi was using himself to mend the Heavenly Dao.
Rather than merging himself with the Heavenly Dao.
In other words, Yuanshi had severed away all that was external to himself. In a state approaching the Heavenly Dao's absence of thought and desire, in the pure form of rules and order at work, he fused into the Heavenly Dao and became a part of it!

The Chan Sect's doctrine was "expounding Heaven and following the Dao," yet Yuanshi's previous actions had actually taken him down a path of "using my heart in place of Heaven's heart."
