Background / History

Hongjun was among the Chaos Demon Gods who rushed to stop Pangu’s creation of the world. An axe wind gravely injured him before he could reach Pangu; he survived by hiding beneath other demon gods’ corpses. He later fought and killed the Demon Ancestor Luohu during the Dragon-Han Calamity, gaining the Primordial Wilderness’s fortune 859 1163.

After becoming a Heavenly Dao Saint, Hongjun preached at Zixiao Palace to spread his Path of Immortality. Cultivators’ progress on that path strengthened his own Dao. He also used the palace’s Heavenly Dao-linked domain to delay the arriving Ancestral Witches, whose attendance had defied his calculations 20 21 29.

At his lectures, Hongjun appointed the Duke of the East and the Queen Mother of the West leaders of male and female immortals. He taught that all three thousand Great Daos could lead to sainthood and let listeners study incomplete Dao imprints from the Jade Creation Disc. The Duke of the East then called him “Dao Ancestor”; the audience followed, increasing Hongjun’s fortune and Heavenly Dao authority, though Wu Tian and the Ancestral Witches did not join in 41.

Hongjun later took the Three Pure Ones and Nüwa as disciples and distributed Primordial Violet Qi and treasures. After concluding the lectures, he announced his merger with the Dao and sent his collected treasures to the Treasure Distribution Cliff 78 86. He subsequently opposed the birth of the Human Dao, but withdrew when Wu Tian’s plan to spread it among the Primordial World’s myriad spirits became clear 392 395.

His conflict with Wu Tian eventually exposed his Three Corpses and his attempt to draw power from the Heavenly Dao. When Wu Tian destroyed the Obsession Corpse and threatened his true spirit with the Heaven-Opening Axe, Hongjun fled by sacrificing his Good Corpse and original body. His Evil Corpse survived as his new body and escaped into Chaos with the Purple Firmament Palace 843 848 857 860 861.

Hongjun later recovered and confronted Wu Tian again in the Purple Heaven Realm. Wu Tian’s allies stopped his attempted self-destruction; as Wu Tian absorbed the realm, Hongjun’s true spirit shattered 1046 1055 1056. He subsequently returned from the Returning Ruins with a body of Heavenly Dao Power and gathered severed Primordial Violet Qi to create further avatars 1163.

Appearance

Hongjun’s appearance changes with his relationship to the Heavenly Dao:

• As his assimilation progresses, his eyes briefly turn emotionless silver-white before their usual vitality returns 399.
• His Good Corpse bears a face resembling two faces forcibly merged, revealing its connection to Ancestor Yin Yang 843.
• On his return from the Returning Ruins, his body is formed from Heavenly Dao Power rather than his original demon-god body 1163.

Personality

Hongjun usually presents a calm, indifferent manner, but carefully manages fortune, authority, and the course of the Heavenly Dao. He favors selected disciples and intervenes indirectly when an open move would reveal his intentions or conflict with Heavenly Dao rules 78 392 409.

His caution becomes most apparent when facing Wu Tian’s Heaven-Opening Axe: despite declaring that he will fight to the death, he sacrifices bodies to ensure that one survives. When later surrounded in the Purple Heaven Realm, he instead attempts to self-destruct rather than be captured 859 860 1054 1055.
