"That's it... hold it steady..."
The magical flow suddenly found its balance, the three powers coexisting harmoniously, like a perfect chord.
A warm light flashed, blinding them.
When their vision cleared, an Oval Amulet lay quietly on the workbench.
Its edges were smooth silver, reflecting the room's candlelight, while the center retained the pattern of an Oak Leaf, its deep green veins faintly visible, shimmering slightly with the changing light.
None of the three dared to speak, for fear of breaking the wondrous feeling of the moment.
Lucretia gently exhaled the breath she had been holding.
Regulus's voice was filled with disbelief: "We did it? It actually worked."
Little Barty didn't speak, but Lucretia noticed the satisfaction in his eyes.
Regulus picked up the amulet and examined it closely: "And it's better than expected. The edges are solid, and the center is full of vitality."
Little Barty waved his wand and summoned a small Training Dummy from the testing area.
This dummy also held a miniature wand in its hand.
Little Barty explained to Lucretia: "This is used during standard defense tests. It will cast a series of minor spells, from the weakest to stronger ones."
Regulus placed the amulet on a small stand and stepped back a few paces.
Little Barty tapped the dummy's holding arm with his wand. It immediately came to life, the wand tip glowing red.
A faint Disarming Charm flew towards the amulet.
When the red light struck the amulet, instead of bouncing the spell back like ordinary defenses, it emitted a soft green glow.
The vein pattern gradually lit up, the green in the center became vibrant, and the amulet as a whole seemed to awaken from a dormant state.
Regulus's eyes widened: "Merlin's beard. It just absorbed magical energy?!"
Little Barty frowned and signaled the dummy to cast a stronger spell.
This time, it was a blue Repelling Charm. The amulet's green light was stronger than before and lasted longer. The leaf-like parts even began to tremble slightly, as if breathing.
Lucretia stepped forward and picked up the amulet, feeling the change within: "It really did get stronger, like... it absorbed magic."
As she held the amulet, preparing to place it back on the stand, her palm felt a different sensation.
The amulet glowed quietly in her hand, the green light spreading outward from the center, brighter and more stable than during the test.
Lucretia stopped, looking down at the amulet in her hands.
The light showed no signs of weakening; instead, it seemed to be slowly intensifying.
She looked up at the two of them, her voice filled with confusion, "It... feels different now."
Little Barty and Regulus both noticed.
The amulet's light was indeed gentler and more sustained than before, as if it had found a special resonance.
Little Barty reached out to take the amulet, expecting the same reaction.
The green light immediately dimmed.
He watched as the amulet went from a warm glow to a faint afterglow, with only a hint of color remaining in the center.
It was as if the vibrant state from moments ago had never existed.
He turned the amulet, trying to find the right angle, but the light remained dim.
"Let Regulus try."
He handed the amulet over, his voice calm.
Regulus had the same reaction when he took it; the light was weak and lacked vitality.
When the amulet returned to Lucretia's hand, the warm green light slowly returned, even gentler than the first time.
Little Barty watched the process, his thumb unconsciously rubbing the surface of his wand.
He leaned in to observe, "So this kind of amulet needs time to establish a connection. The longer you hold it, the more obvious the reaction will be."

When Regulus returned the amulet to Lucretia, he noticed Little Barty's expression.
His voice carried a clear hint of amusement, "It seems to like you especially, sister. Even the amulet meticulously crafted by Barty is closer to you."
As he spoke, Little Barty stopped rubbing his wand.
"Regulus, we made it together."
His voice was calm, but his eyes held a warning.
Regulus nodded, showing no intention of curbing his smile, "You're right. A masterpiece of teamwork."
Lucretia looked down at the amulet pulsing warmly in her hand, "Then who should keep it? Aren't we supposed to give this amulet to Headmaster Dumbledore tomorrow?"
Regulus recoiled dramatically, "Of course, the most talented. Clearly you, sister."
Little Barty pursed his lips and averted his gaze, "The amulet reacts most strongly to you. From a utility perspective, it's most suitable for you to carry."
Lucretia carefully placed the amulet into her pocket, "I'll take good care of it."
While Little Barty was tidying his tools, Regulus leaned in, "Don't worry, we have experience. We can make a few more."
Little Barty began tidying his tools, his movements slower than usual, "One amulet isn't enough. We need at least three, one for each of us."
He paused, his hands stopping their movements.
"Or four. Just in case."
Regulus, who was organizing parchment, looked up at Little Barty upon hearing this, his mouth twitching.
He repeated Little Barty's words, suppressing a laugh, "Right, just in case. Absolutely not because someone wants... a few extra layers of protection, from head to toe."
Little Barty snapped the tool case shut forcefully, emitting a crisp click.
The three of them finished Headmaster Dumbledore's small assignment and sat in a rest area in the corner, relaxing with drinks conjured by the Room of Requirement.
Lucretia, holding her strawberry juice, suddenly sat up straight, "Barty, Brother Regulus, I was wondering... can this kind of amulet react to environmental changes like Zephyr Grass?"
Little Barty immediately looked up, "You mean the ability to sense danger?"
His reaction was quick; he immediately thought of the anomaly with the Zephyr Grass she had mentioned earlier.
"Yes, if it can give a warning when danger is near, like how Zephyr Grass turns?"
Regulus put down his drink, propping his chin with his hand, "Theoretically possible. Plants themselves can sense the environment. If transfiguration retains this characteristic..."
Little Barty took out parchment and began to record quickly, marking each observation point with possible improvements, "It's indeed worth researching. Next week we can try different active materials to see which is more sensitive to environmental changes. And this activated substance, didn't Dumbledore mention it could be used not just in tools, but even in spells?"
Lucretia leaned in to look at his notes, "You write so detailed, just like the spell notes you gave me before school started."
Little Barty didn't look up, "It's a habit. Recording helps track progress and discover patterns."
Regulus glanced at the clock and realized it was past curfew. He quickly got up to organize the schoolbags for the three of them, "Remember to carry the amulet with you, sister. We can observe its reaction in different environments. It's getting late, shall we continue next week at the same time?"
Little Barty closed his notebook, "We'll practice here once a week. Let's follow Dumbledore's four-week plan first. Tomorrow is active material selection, and the third week is making Enduring Protective Items."
Regulus twirled the quill in his hand. He looked at the two of them, "Regarding Dumbledore's lessons... I was thinking, maybe I should attend too. Since we're making amulets together, a complete understanding of the theory might be more helpful."
Little Barty raised an eyebrow and turned to Lucretia, "Considering today's results, that makes sense. What do you think?"
Lucretia said softly, "I don't think Headmaster Dumbledore would mind. He mentioned that this kind of transfiguration is best passed down among those who understand it."
Little Barty nodded, "Then it's settled. The three of us will go tomorrow. This way, practical application and division of labor will be more efficient."
Lucretia nodded, then hesitated, "But I'm not sure I can maintain this vitality transfer on all the materials. What if tomorrow's class..."
Little Barty watched her, his tone softening, "You'll do great. Your talent in this area is undeniable, trust me."
Regulus watched their interaction, his lips pressed together to suppress a comment.
Before leaving the Room of Requirement, the three of them checked the crack in the door a few times to confirm Filch and his cat weren't in the corridor.
Regulus took the lead, scouting ahead, stopping every few steps to listen for movement in the corridor.
Little Barty placed a hand on Lucretia's shoulder, "Reg, lead the way. Your S.B. map expert must have taught you a lot."
Regulus looked back, seeing Little Barty's protective stance, and the corner of his mouth curved up.
"But at least my brother wouldn't be so flashy when he sneaks out at night. Let's stick to the hidden route."
