Background / History

World was a pirate powerful enough to have once competed with figures such as Roger and Whitebeard. The World Government regarded him as a major threat, and he was ultimately frozen in Impel Down's Infinite Hell for ten years. The prolonged freezing caused irreversible muscle damage and left him below his former peak, though he gradually recovered much of his strength after escaping. 89 161

During the Impel Down riot, King awakened World from the ice and attempted to force him into helping against Longinus. World initially rejected any obligation to assist his rescuer, but temporarily joined King against the Marine when threatened. 89

Two years later, World had established territory on Beast Island and sought to use Sea Transport King Umit as a bridge for an alliance with Big Mom. He arranged a banquet, secured the Big Mom Pirates' flag through Katakuri, and prepared to assert himself as an overlord of the New World. 162 164 168

Longinus infiltrated the banquet and challenged World directly. After realizing the Red Hair Pirates had betrayed him and that his own body could no longer sustain a prolonged battle, World abandoned any plan to escape and pushed his abilities beyond their limits.
