After CBS's variety show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire became a huge success last year, the network began placing great importance on variety programming.
This summer, CBS's self-produced wilderness survival competition reality show Survivor Season 1 was set to air.
Survivor selected sixteen contestants and confined them to a specific environment, where they had to survive with limited tools as part of the competition. The eventual winner would receive a prize of $1 million!
"This reality variety show is pretty good," Aaron said from his office as he looked at Byron Gilbert, head of CBS's programming department.
Survivor could be said to have been adapted from the Swedish game show Expedition Robinson. It originated from Survival on a Desert Island, a program conceived in 1994 by Charlie Parsons, a television producer from the United Kingdom's Planet 24 Entertainment.
However, the idea had failed to attract the interest of the major broadcasters in the United States and the United Kingdom. In the end, Sweden's Strix Television acquired the rights, creating the game show Expedition Robinson, which had its roots in the novel Robinson Crusoe.
When Expedition Robinson first aired in Sweden in 1997, it immediately caused a sensation. The show isolated contestants on a deserted island and displayed their genuine behavior to viewers.
Moreover, its participants were all ordinary people, giving it tremendous authentic appeal. Combined with its fresh premise and lively format, it quickly achieved immense success in Sweden and across Northern Europe.
After CBS scored a major success by importing the United Kingdom's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, it promptly brought in this show as well and renamed it Survivor!
"Survivor Season 1 chose Borneo as its filming location. That's pretty good too."
Aaron put down the documents. "I have another idea you can listen to."
