Since 1789, the US Presidential Election had been held once every four years. The entire process was complex and time-consuming: first came the primaries and caucuses held by each party in every state to select their candidates;

Finally came the nationwide presidential campaign, the nationwide popular vote, and the Electoral College vote, ending with the presidential inauguration. The entire process took as long as eighteen months!

Within the Republican Party, George W. Bush had taken the lead in securing the support of the campaign team of his former biggest rival, John McCain.
