The title of Mage made Wade instinctively take a few extra looks at Li Feng.
A cloak of unknown material, boots outdated by centuries, and most importantly, a little belly and a long sword at his waist. A Mage actually had a little belly and carried a long sword! Where was the staff? What happened to the staff he was supposed to have? This was nothing like the white-bearded Mage he had imagined. He was just as crazy as Adam.
Facing Wade's strange gaze, Li Feng merely shrugged, as if to say believe it or not. You'll find out whether I'm a Mage soon enough. By now, Adam kicking down the back door should have drawn the Demon over, right?
Before Adam and Wade could even leave the abandoned factory, Julier, the Demon they had just been talking about, suddenly burst into the factory. As he reverted to his Demon form, he shouted at Adam, "Frankenstein!"
Beside them, Wade stared blankly as flames suddenly erupted from Julier's head, revealing a savage face.
Li Feng pulled out a playing card, patted the shell-shocked Wade on the shoulder, and said, "Look, a Demon. Want to drag him into a lab and dissect him?"
The moment Adam heard Julier's cry, he pulled out two metal Short Staffs. Charging at the Demon, he told Li Feng, "Protect Wade and get out."
Li Feng casually fired a playing card at Julier, then snapped his fingers and shut Wade inside the Mirror Dimension. "Why the hell would we leave? It'll be much more fun to work together and kill this Demon."
As he spoke, Li Feng pulled out playing cards to support Adam from the side while secretly preparing a Time Spell. Once he found an opening, he would slap the Time Spell in his hand right onto Julier's face. He wanted to see whether this clearly weak Demon could break free from the cage of the Time Spell.
Julier's strength and experience had originally far surpassed Adam's. If Li Feng's playing cards had not kept smacking toward his face, buzzing in his mind like an annoying fly, he believed killing Adam would only be a matter of time.
Noticing that Li Feng's playing cards had a range of only ten meters, Julier thought it over. If he rushed Li Feng now, Adam would definitely tie him down and look for a chance to give him a good whack. Adam was no weakling. Who knew whether one blow would give him a concussion? Better to change the battlefield.
With that in mind, Julier noticed a collapsed section of the factory floor in the distance and retreated as he fought. The moment Adam let his guard down, Julier kicked him down to the floor below.
Was Li Feng's spell range really only ten meters? Bullshit. What Mage had ever seen a spell vanish after flying ten meters? Li Feng was merely used to controlling his playing cards with precision and deliberately showing weakness to the Demon.
Now, Li Feng's Time Spell was ready. All he needed was a chance to slap Julier across the face with it.
Seeing Julier ignore his playing cards and prepare to jump downstairs to kill Adam, Li Feng decisively raised his hand and fired the spell.
A stream-like mass of magic instantly wrapped around Julier just as he leaped into the air. Li Feng swiftly drew his long sword and rushed to Julier's side, swinging the blade blazing with fire and cutting off Julier's head in a single strike.
Only after seeing Julier's soul turn into a Fireball and burrow underground, while his corpse crumbled into dust, did Li Feng finally relax. He leaned over the edge of the collapse and looked down at Adam. "Buddy, if you're not dead, say something."
After saying that, Li Feng opened a Portal connected to the Mirror Dimension and brought the bewildered Wade back out.
Though outsiders could not detect the Mirror Dimension, anyone inside it could see everything happening outside. So the moment Wade stepped out, he took several deep breaths and rubbed his face as he muttered to himself, "First Adam turns out to have lived for centuries, then someone around my boss turns into a Demon, and finally a Mage shows up who can shoot flaming cards. Is this still the world I know?"
Li Feng curled his lip and said disdainfully, "And you call yourself a doctor. Can't you just think of Demons as aliens? Isn't magic simply science we don't understand yet?"
"Science?" Wade looked as though Li Feng was messing with him. "Then explain with science how your cards caught fire the moment they hit that Demon."
Li Feng raised a hand and cast a spell, summoning a tiny flame in his palm. "Doesn't molecular vibration and friction create flames?"
Wade was speechless. Of course he knew molecular vibrations could produce fire, but how did Li Feng control molecular vibrations? Wade took a deep breath and asked, "Lots of people know molecular vibrations can cause combustion, but has anyone become a Mage because of that?"
"Mental power." Li Feng spread his hands as he explained, "You can think of it as brainwaves, radio waves, and so on. Once you understand and learn to use brainwaves, you'll find spells as simple as using a remote control to change TV channels."
At that moment, Adam, who had been kicked downstairs by Julier, staggered back to Li Feng. Curious, he asked, "What was that last spell? Why did Julier move like he was in slow motion in a movie?"
Li Feng casually explained, "Time Slowing Spell. As long as a creature is hit by it, the flow of time around that creature slows down."
Wade, who had begun to believe that magic was related to science, stared blankly. "Time? Can modern science explain time now? How did you slow time? Can you travel through time to the past or future too?"
Damn it, I never should have told a scientist that magic was unknown science. Great, now I've sparked a scientist's urge to get to the bottom of everything.
"Time is related to Quantum Energy." After that brief explanation, Li Feng turned to Adam. "Buddy, are you sure this is a good place to chat? Aren't you afraid Naberius will send more Demons to hunt you down?"
In truth, Adam did not need Li Feng's reminder. He had already dragged away Wade, who was about to ask how Quantum Energy could manipulate time, and prepared to return to his shabby little house.
Back at the shabby house, Wade treated the wounds of Adam, the human shield warrior, while staring at Li Feng with curiosity in his eyes.
Adam endured the pain of Wade stitching his wounds and asked Li Feng, "Why were you following me?"
Leaning against the wall, Li Feng shrugged. "I was curious about you and Frankenstein's notebook that can resurrect corpses. You know I'm a Mage. In our eyes, you're like a Flesh Golem brought back to life with magic, except you have intelligence. A Mage's Flesh Golem has no intelligence."
After thinking for a moment, Li Feng said to Adam, whose eyes were filled with anger, "If the term Flesh Golem offends you, I can apologize. The truth is, I don't know what species to call you for now."
"For now?" Wade, busy stitching Adam's wounds, caught Li Feng's confusion. "What do you mean?"
Li Feng walked over to Adam, crouched down to meet his gaze, and pointed at his own eyes. "I don't know whether you've noticed the changes in yourself, but I've discovered that your body has already begun to nurture a soul. The soul is just trapped inside an eggshell right now, and I don't know when it will emerge. That's why I can only say for now. In the future, you will definitely become a human, an extraordinary human with a long life."
After saying that, Li Feng looked at the experimental notebook at Adam's waist. Slowly reaching for it, he said, "I'm very curious how Frankenstein gave you intelligence in the first place, and what caused you to nurture a soul now. Was it time? Or something else?"
When Adam heard Li Feng say that he would soon possess a soul, he froze completely, immersed in joy. He did not snap out of it until Li Feng's hand touched the notebook. Still, Adam did not stop him. Instead, he asked with a conflicted expression, "Are you sure you saw my soul?"
Holding the experimental notebook, Li Feng stepped back a few paces. As he opened it and copied its contents into his Magic Book, he said, "I'm sure. If you don't believe me, you can try killing yourself and see whether your soul floats out."
As Wade's worldview was being rebuilt, he thought, Since Demons and angels have both appeared, I can accept a Mage and a Flesh Golem discussing souls. I just wonder whether, after working for the Demon Prince all these years, my soul will go to Heaven after I die, or whether I'll continue working for Naberius in Hell.
When Wade heard Li Feng's suggestion, he rolled his eyes. "If someone dies, what does it matter whether they know they have a soul?"
"Then let him die." Li Feng glanced at Wade. "Aren't you here? Just resurrect Adam's corpse."
Before long, Li Feng tossed the experimental notebook to Wade. "Take a look. There are a lot of interesting ideas in there."
That was what Li Feng said aloud, wearing an expression that said he was amazing, a great scholar who understood the notebook's contents at a glance. But inside, I can't understand this notebook. I'm uneducated. I apologize. Damn it, how did Frankenstein use electric eel currents to resurrect corpses? Can some genius explain it to me? Great, now I can't create immortal pets unless I go back to the Marvel Universe and spend a few years in college.
Wade curiously took the notebook and sat on the bed to read through it. As for Adam, whether he was simply broad-minded or had expended too much energy fighting Julier, he fell asleep in no time, even beginning to snore.
Li Feng rubbed his brow. Since he had obtained the notebook's contents, it was time to leave. He knew that his current little body could not get involved in the battle between Adam, the Gargoyle, and the Demons.
Li Feng gave a light cough, signaling Wade to shift his attention from the experimental notebook to him. Unfortunately, he had underestimated Wade's obsession with it. Without even raising his head, Wade said, "Mr. Austin, what is it?"
Li Feng said, "Nothing. I just wanted to tell you that I've been out for a long time. I'm heading back to the monastery to meet up with my companions."
Wade looked up at Li Feng, then waved him away like he was shooing a fly. "All right. I'll tell Adam."
After thinking it over, Li Feng kindly reminded him, "In this world, human life is a gift bestowed by God. You are only an ordinary person, yet you've stepped into God's domain. Take care of yourself."
With that, Li Feng opened a Portal and vanished before Wade's eyes. As for whether Wade would continue eagerly studying corpse resurrection or reflect on himself and burn the experimental notebook, that was none of Li Feng's business. He had warned Wade already, hadn't he?
