Inside the Mirror Dimension, Tom seemed to understand his Destiny. When Li Feng prepared to cast the Temptation Spell on him again, Tom stubbornly hid inside the diary and refused to show himself, wearing the air of a man who could be killed but never humiliated.
Li Feng could do nothing about it. Killing Tom to vent his anger would not be a problem—he could easily accomplish that—but after killing Tom, how was he supposed to convince Dumbledore that the diary was a Horcrux? Li Feng was not sure. Perhaps Dumbledore would even suspect that Li Feng had simply brought him some battered old diary to fool him.
With no other choice, Li Feng and Tom inside the diary remained deadlocked.
When Dumbledore appeared in the Chamber of Secrets again, Li Feng, who had only recorded a few spells, returned to reality with a resentful expression. Reluctantly handing the diary to Dumbledore, he said, "I feel like I got the short end of the stick. Could you compensate me with some Galleons?"

If Slughorn hadn't recently become obsessed with refining Potions from Basilisks to improve his reputation, he would never have traded the Magic Amplification Potion to me so easily."
