Background / History

Duanmu Ci conceived Taoyuan Village as more than an expanded medical station: a self-sufficient refuge where medical care, research, postwar reconstruction, and protection for vulnerable people could coexist. Tsunade ultimately committed to the project and its goal of respecting life while creating a lasting home beyond the ravages of war 89 141 161.

Konoha approved the project in principle, assigning Duanmu Ci responsibility for its construction, management, and operation on Yougu Plain near the Forest of Death. He was also granted the rank of Special Jonin to support the undertaking 81.

The original site was a remote valley with a stream, mountains on three sides, relatively flat ground, and a wider southern entrance. Duanmu Ci used Wood Release to raise the initial wooden housing frames, giving the settlement its physical foundation 141.

Taoyuan Village grew rapidly as medical ninja, artisans, displaced civilians, and war orphans arrived. Its first residents took on farming, logistics, construction, medical work, and education, while Yakushi Nonō established an orphanage for children displaced by war 38 147.

After Duanmu Ci repelled the Cloud Village probe, the village created the Taoyuan Guard as its own loyal defensive force. Following the defeat of Kirigakure's Seven Ninja Swordsmen, the settlement rebuilt its damaged areas through Wood Release and emerged with stronger unity and confidence in its protector 155 15.

Konoha later formally recognized Taoyuan Village as a special administrative region with substantial autonomy. Duanmu Ci became its leader, Tsunade its deputy leader, and the original medical station was elevated into Konoha's Second Medical Center and the Taoyuan Branch of the Medical Ninja Academy 169.

Location and Layout

Taoyuan Village occupies Yougu Plain on Konoha's outskirts, near the Forest of Death. Its remote position, natural terrain, nearby stream, and available land were selected to balance security, resources, concealment, and expansion 81 141 146.

Major Incidents

Root infiltration and rumor campaign

Root agents infiltrated the developing village to poison water supplies, collect intelligence, and sabotage its command post. Shizune, Nonō, and the Taoyuan Guard captured the agents; they were publicly crippled, banished, and warned not to return 150.

Root also spread accusations that Taoyuan Village experimented on orphans and made medicine from forbidden materials. The Open Day and Tsunade’s public intervention undermined the campaign, forcing the disguised ANBU operatives to withdraw 18.

Cloud Village probe

Cloud Village forces led by the Fourth Raikage and the Eight-Tails threatened the area under the pretense of pursuing rogue ninja. Duanmu Ci repelled them, though his use of Pseudo-Almighty Push and direct confrontation with their chakra caused internal injuries 154 155.

Seven Ninja Swordsmen attack

Kirigakure dispatched infiltrators to identify weaknesses in Taoyuan Village’s defenses. After one captured spy disclosed that the Seven Ninja Swordsmen were approaching, the village activated its highest combat readiness, reinforced barriers, and evacuated noncombatants 178 179.

The swordsmen breached the southeastern barrier, but Duanmu Ci erected a massive Wood Release barrier around the core area. He subsequently defeated the attacking force, leaving Taoyuan Village damaged but intact; the village immediately began reconstruction 179 15.
