Traitor Knight Dick
Wolves were not frightening.
Even magical-beast-level wolves were not frightening.
But a pack of magical beast wolves was terrifying.
So Romain's expression changed.
Shasta's expression changed as well.
She grabbed the terrified Gevra and turned to leave.
"You want to leave?" Romain stepped out from behind Aaron's shield, his expression grim.
Shasta met Romain's gaze. "If you still mean to stop me at a time like this, your entire force will be wiped out."
She might not have been able to wipe out Romain's retainers alone, but with the wolf pack, she certainly could.
Romain raised his chin, and his next words were like icy blades. "If you dare leave, I'll kill Gevra!"
Shasta and Gevra might truly have been able to escape, but he and his guards definitely could not.
That would be the same as using his own troops to hold back the savage wolf pack.
But Romain would not allow that to happen.
Shasta might be difficult to kill. With the Armor-Piercing Greatbow, he could not guarantee that he would hit Shasta—the witch who could use smoke was a natural counter to his archery, and judging by how quickly she had killed magical beasts alone, her physical abilities were certainly no weaker than those of a third-tier War Knight.
But Gevra was another matter.
If Shasta dared take Gevra away, he would not aim at Shasta. He would aim at Gevra, and have every hunter fire together.
Romain said, "Either we both lose, or you stay and kill every last wolf with me!"
Shasta trembled all over, gritting her pearly teeth as she agreed.
"Aaron, take Gevra to the very back. If anyone dares turn and run, kill her immediately!"
Romain remained calm in the face of danger as he directed the troops. He arranged for the hunters to spread out and fire freely, while the shield-bearing guards stood at the front to hinder the wolf pack and prevent their formation from being broken apart head-on.
"The wolves are here. None of us can escape. There is no retreat—we can only fight to the death!" Romain gave a brief speech. After the wild bear attack just now, he had despaired over the guards' combat quality, but he still had to say what needed to be said.
But before he could say much more, a foul wind rushed toward them.
The wolf pack crossed the rugged terrain and suddenly emerged from the dense forest.
They were massive, their gray fur coarse and tough. The adult wolves were over two meters long, stood more than a meter at the shoulder, and weighed close to two hundred jin.
But that was only the size of the adult wolves. Not all dozen or so mountain wolves were that strong. Only five or six were in their prime. The rest were she-wolves, old wolves, or young wolves, relatively frail by comparison.
In an instant, Romain keenly sensed the guards' morale wavering. Even the hunters grew nervous; this was also their first time clashing head-on with these vicious beasts.
He roared, "Don't fall back! Those who retreat will die! Kill these beasts!"
The wolves moved as swiftly as the wind. Upon seeing the guards in front of them, they did not charge straight in. Instead, relying on their agility and mobility, they attacked from both flanks.
The mountain forest terrain was complicated. It was difficult for humans to maneuver around it, but it did not hinder the wolves.
"Send support to the flanks!"
Romain drew the Armor-Piercing Greatbow. He had been aiming ever since the wolves appeared.
With a twang, the arrow left the string. He had aimed for its body, but struck the wolf's hind leg instead.
The tremendous force instantly pierced one of its rear legs, knocking it down. Its momentum carried it another two or three meters forward before it vanished into the shrubs—then the grass began shaking violently, accompanied by an exceptionally miserable howl.
The strongest wolf pounced from the right.
Shasta leaped into the air, black mist swirling around her foot as her flying kick struck the target dead-on, breaking the charge of the fiercest wolf.
Shasta and the wolf crashed heavily onto the mountainside together.
Shasta sprang to her feet, and the wolf swiftly rose as well. The two immediately engaged in a fierce battle.
Romain was attacked too. He reversed the Armor-Piercing Greatbow, switching from shooting to swinging, and sent a prime wolf flying.
The heavy greatbow spun nimbly in Romain's hands. He used it as a shield, holding it across his body to intercept another wolf's pounce. The wolf's head slipped right between the bowstring and the bow itself. It opened its jaws and bit into Romain's ribs, but fortunately, it failed to bite through his thick clothes—nobles' hunting clothes could practically be considered soft armor.
Expressionless, Romain twisted the greatbow with brute force. Using the tough bowstring, he forcibly sliced through the wolf's throat, shredding all the fur around its neck as well. Scalding blood gushed out, dyeing half his body red.
When Romain threw aside the wolf corpse tucked beneath his arm and looked elsewhere, he saw Shasta locked in a bitter fight with two wolves, while his guards and hunters had long since been scattered by the pack.
Though several arrows were lodged in every wolf's body, none were fatal. The pain of their wounds had clearly stimulated their savage nature, while the guards plainly lacked that ferocity. Five or six men had already fallen.
At this rate, the guards would be completely wiped out.
The injured wolves grew fiercer with every battle, while the injured humans became more and more pathetic.
A bunch of trash!
Even if they killed the wolves, only a few of these people might survive until the end. Damn it, he should never have sent Green and Dota after Bandit Borg.
Just then, Romain heard another long wolf howl from nearby, while the wolves here answered with howls of their own.
Romain was greatly alarmed and realized that the alpha wolf had yet to appear.
This was bad!
Aaron slammed his heavy shield into a wild wolf, pinning down its movements. Hearing the commotion, he immediately grew anxious and prepared to escort Romain out.
At that moment, the alpha wolf suddenly let out another miserable cry from afar.
Had Green and Dota returned?
Realizing that the alpha wolf had been attacked and noticing signs that the pack was preparing to retreat, Romain's spirits immediately soared.
"Stop those beasts!" Romain picked up a spear from the ground and hurled it with all his strength. However, it failed to pierce a wild wolf's body. It was more like a long stick striking one wolf in the waist, causing no obvious injury—only making it stagger.
As the wolf pack retreated, a figure suddenly charged out.
That person swung a longsword and easily cut down the first wolf to emerge. Then he held back the second, staggering wolf and swiftly killed it as well.
After Shasta killed two more wolves and Romain smashed another two to death with his longbow, the battle quickly came to an end.
Romain let out a heavy breath. The fight had not lasted long, at most two or three minutes, but it had drained an enormous amount of stamina. Fortunately, they had won.
The unfamiliar reinforcements also walked over.
Romain had already noticed that this man's swordsmanship was clearly not Green's, and Green was not nearly this fierce.
Soon, Romain saw the man's face.
"Uncle Dick!"
Frightened by the sudden turn of events, Gevra, the Misfortune Witch, ran over.
Hearing that name, Romain carefully studied the middle-aged man before him. His hair was disheveled, his beard unkempt, and he looked downcast, yet his features were handsome and carried a strong air of weathered maturity.
