Xi Xiu took out some clothes from her Space Locket and put them away. Her tiny body stayed busy for about an hour.
It was already dusk. The sun had set, and Xi Xiu planned to take a bath, change clothes, eat dinner, do some simple exercise in her room, and then rest.
When she looked up, she saw Xue Fanhui staring at her with a look of surprise.
"Hello, is something wrong?" Seeing that she had remained silent for a long time, Xi Xiu decided to speak first.
"Oh, no. Your name is Hong Xixiu?"
"Yes. You're Xue Fanhui, right? I just got here and don't understand many things yet. If I disturb you in any way, you can tell me directly. I'll change."
Xi Xiu knew that even under the same roof, everyone had different habits. Children were no exception.
What did not bother you could very well be something someone else avoided. It was better for the two of them to communicate beforehand than let conflicts pile up later.
Alliance children began receiving all kinds of education at the age of three, while physical training and Mental Power training started as early as two.
Xue Fanhui looked about a year older than Xi Xiu's physical age. In the Alliance, children over six already understood quite a lot.
So Xi Xiu did not speak to Xue Fanhui as if she were placating a child. Judging by Xue Fanhui's reaction, she had chosen the right approach.
"I like quiet. When I'm sitting at the table building models, I don't like having my train of thought interrupted."
Xue Fanhui had not expected this younger girl to be so understanding. Her previous roommate had been far too noisy, which was why she had asked Vivian to move her.
"Okay. I like quiet too. I'll remember that." Xi Xiu nodded and smiled at Xue Fanhui.
Xue Fanhui was happy as well. Having her habits respected was something that made her very happy, so she smiled back at Xi Xiu.
Xi Xiu looked at the distinctive-looking girl before her. Xue Fanhui looked different from anyone Xi Xiu had seen before.
She had wheat-colored skin, beautiful phoenix eyes, and a standard posture. Her whole person radiated vitality.
Xi Xiu was happy too. She and Xue Fanhui probably would not have too many conflicts in the future. They should be able to get along pleasantly.
The two of them had reached a preliminary understanding, laying the first foundation stone for their future coexistence.
After their first exchange, Xue Fanhui returned to her room to sort out her clothes, intending to wait until her roommate next door had finished bathing before going herself.
There were not actually many children in the Orphanage—just over two hundred, all girls.
Most were homeless or abandoned. Some were children orphaned on frontier battlefields and had been assigned here by the Alliance according to the nearest-location principle.
There were around ninety children over the age of ten, housed in another building. They normally did not come to Xi Xiu's side.
For ease of management, the Orphanage arranged three children to a suite. Each had her own room, and they were all roughly the same age to prevent older children from bullying younger ones. They shared a restroom and bathing room.
The living quarters were spacious, the furniture was thoroughly modern, and all kinds of advanced technology made everything incredibly convenient. Xi Xiu liked it here very much.
She had just taken a look around the bathing room. After coming out, she was fresh and clean.
The clothes were made of quick-drying fabric, light and breathable. The only issue was that the color was hard to accept—it was an entirely green outfit. Wearing it made her feel like a blob of moving green ointment.
There was no helping it. Ningkui Star's color was green, so the buildings, utensils, and many other things here were all this fresh and "lovely" green. It was one of Ningkui Star's major characteristics.
After her bath, the robot had already delivered today's Nutrient Paste. It was carrot-flavored.
Xi Xiu had been eating this ever since the laboratory and was already sick of the sight of it. But there was no helping it—she still had to keep eating it for balanced nutrition.
She finished dinner in five minutes, cleaned up the trash, and began exercising: simple punches, arm-strength training, and practice controlling her Mental Power.
An hour later, Xi Xiu, drenched in sweat, stood beneath the bathroom showerhead again.
After a burst of mist, she came out feeling much more refreshed. Once she was done, Xi Xiu climbed onto her little bed and prepared to rest.
Xue Fanhui next door was shocked by her self-discipline. Even she could not manage that, so Xue Fanhui sped up her own training and got into bed after Xi Xiu turned off the lights.
On her first night on Ningkui Star, Xi Xiu slept lightly. She had not dreamed at all during her escape, yet she unexpectedly dreamed of her previous life—and that person.
When her terminal alarm rang in the early morning, Xi Xiu was still somewhat dazed. There were dried tear tracks at the corners of her eyes.
Xi Xiu sat up, wrapped her arms around her knees, and looked at the dimly brightening sky outside. The sun had not yet risen, and the Orphanage was silent. Just like her heart at that moment, she could never go back again.
She looked around. Her large eyes took in everything before her. This would be her place of refuge from now on. She would live here, and no one could predict what the future would bring.
Before she had time to think further, sounds of Xue Fanhui exercising came from the neighboring room.
Xi Xiu quickly got up, made her bed, grumbled briefly about her short arms and legs—and especially her tiny hands—then briskly went to wash up.
The robot was already waiting outside the living room. Once Xi Xiu was ready, it connected them to the Star Net's virtual academy. After putting on the virtual device, Xi Xiu lay in the starry capsule and began that day's studies.
The education system here began at age five, with the first stage ending at sixteen. Over those eleven years, students had to study four basic languages, practical math, physics, and chemistry, mechanical principles, medical principles, and combat.
There was also a set of martial arts movements that every Alliance citizen had to learn. They were divided into nine levels and required examinations on the Star Net. These martial arts were meant to ensure that citizens could protect themselves if war broke out.
Then there were those damned languages. Sixi had taught her the Alliance common language, but to live on Ningkui Star, she needed to know Ningkui Star's native language.
Her schedule also included Anvile, Miu Run, and Aura. Other languages could be handled with translation devices, but she had to learn and take exams in these four.
On top of that, she had to privately study the Mingzhao Language, in case she exposed herself someday. Altogether, she had to learn five languages. Overall, Xi Xiu had quite a heavy workload.
So where would she find time to be sad? She could only rise up and work hard.
Whenever Xi Xiu thought of the human lifespan here, she became excited. Even if she only lived to be 230, combined with the brief twenty-eight years of her previous life, she would not be at a loss. It would fully make up for the regret of dying young in her past life!
She had to work hard and become stronger. In this life, she absolutely had to LIVE! TO! A! RIPE! OLD! AGE!
Lying in the starry capsule, Xi Xiu entered an even more wondrous world.
Following the prompts, she set her nickname and appearance. Her ID was fixed and could not be changed.
For her nickname, Xi Xiu used Ningkui Star's Alliance code. For her Star Net avatar, she chose one of the ordinary female appearances provided by the system.
Her first course was Ningkui Star's language and culture. After logging into the Star Net, Xi Xiu entered the virtual academy to study.
The virtual academy was holographic. The teacher was indistinguishable from a real person and explained things vividly, making study effortless for Xi Xiu.
Xi Xiu felt that every time she encountered a new technology, her understanding of the world was refreshed. This feeling was truly... she was so weak it was ridiculous.
After two hours, the robot would send messages to the children studying, reminding them to log off and rest before returning twenty minutes later.
By the end of the day, Xi Xiu had basically grasped the rhythm of life and study here.
All three meals were Nutrient Paste, though sometimes they were Nutrient Paste drinks. Each age group received different kinds.
Xi Xiu ate happily because it was finally not carrot-flavored. To ensure a balanced diet, the Orphanage changed their flavors every two days.
