Background / History
Hiruzen was a disciple of the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju. During the First Ninja War, Tobirama died covering the retreat, forcing Hiruzen to assume the Hokage position in a crisis. With help from his fellow students, he secured his authority and led Konoha to victory, though he lost his close friend Kagami Uchiha during the conflict. 11
By the Second Ninja War, Hiruzen had earned the name Ninja Hero and personally commanded Konoha’s campaign in the Land of Rain. He divided Konoha’s five thousand troops between a four-thousand-man assault on Amegakure under his command and Orochimaru’s force tasked with delaying Sunagakure. 4 5 He fought Hanzō of the Salamander and Kakuzu, ultimately negotiating a ceasefire once Konoha’s reinforcements secured the broader battlefield. 5 6 He later concluded an alliance treaty with Hanzō, positioning Konoha favorably for the war’s final stage. 10
Following Konoha’s victory, Hiruzen publicly recognized Orochimaru and Hatake Sakumo for their wartime service, awarding them Hokage Armbands as candidates for the Fourth Hokage. 17 He increasingly viewed Orochimaru as his most capable successor, trusting him with military commands, mentorship duties, and eventually the Hokage succession. 45 85 130
During the Third Ninja War, Hiruzen continued to make difficult strategic decisions, including authorizing a plan to assassinate the Kazekage and considering the destruction of Kannabi Bridge to sever Iwagakure’s supply route. 34 91 He also remained protective of his son Asuma, secretly assigning Sarutobi Clan jōnin to safeguard him while still permitting him to serve in wartime logistics. 54
After Orochimaru became the Fourth Hokage, Hiruzen relinquished most political power and became principal of the Ninja Academy. He trained new generations of Konoha ninja, promoted promising students to Orochimaru, and continued building alliances beneficial to the Sarutobi Clan. 138 139
Hiruzen’s long tolerance of Shimura Danzō ended after Danzō’s crimes became impossible to overlook. He helped confront Danzō’s faction, intercepted him at Konoha’s border, and fought him personally. 139 141 When their final battle reached its climax, Hiruzen used the Reaper Death Seal at the cost of his own life to take Danzō with him. 198 199 His soul was later released and his body reanimated alongside the previous Hokage during the war against Konoha. 233 234
Appearance
Hiruzen is depicted as an elderly shinobi with a beard and a habitual ivory pipe. During his active years as Hokage, he wore old-fashioned battle armor; in his final confrontation with Danzō, his battle garb was left tattered by the prolonged fight. 4 198
- Frequently smokes an ivory pipe.
- Wore traditional armor while commanding Konoha during the Land of Rain campaign. 4
- Retained a forceful battlefield presence even at sixty-nine years old. 198
- Often carried Enma in the form of the Adamantine Staff. 6 198
Personality
Hiruzen is a charismatic leader who sincerely believes in the Will of Fire. His public speeches emphasize Konoha’s continuity, the protection of younger generations, and the duty of shinobi to give their lives for the village when necessary. 4 17 199
He is also politically calculating. During the Second Ninja War, he elevated Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya partly to create alternative successors to Hatake Sakumo and prevent any single faction from becoming too dominant. 3 He understood the importance of credit, prestige, clan influence, and succession in maintaining Konoha’s stability.
His greatest weakness was his enduring attachment to Danzō. Hiruzen repeatedly excused or minimized Danzō’s conduct, hoping to restrain him without destroying their old bond. 129 140 By the time he finally acted decisively, he regarded his own indulgence as the cause of Danzō’s descent. 189
Away from war and politics, Hiruzen is affectionate toward his family, amused by Asuma’s defiance, and prone to enjoying village gossip—particularly concerning Orochimaru and Tsunade. 17 51 92
Abilities & Skills
Five-Nature Transformation
Hiruzen is renowned as the Professor of Ninjutsu and possesses exceptional mastery over all five basic chakra natures.
- Uses Fire, Wind, Earth, Water, and Lightning Release in combat. 6 28
- His elemental mastery is considered superior to Kakuzu’s despite Kakuzu also wielding all five natures. 233
- Combines elemental techniques with allies, including a Lightning Water Dragon Bullet formed with Tobirama’s Water Dragon Bullet. 245
- His large-scale elemental techniques consume considerable chakra, limiting how long he can maintain maximum-output attacks. 6
Five Release: Great Exploding Star Technique
Hiruzen’s strongest documented ninjutsu is a massive five-element attack prepared through four clones.
- Requires Hiruzen to create four clones before activation. 6
- Forced both Hanzō and Kakuzu to evade rather than withstand it directly. 6
- Was regarded by Hiruzen as an attack only someone on Hashirama Senju’s level could casually endure. 6
Adamantine Staff and Taijutsu
Hiruzen fights with Enma transformed into the indestructible Adamantine Staff.
- Blocked Hanzō’s sickle and drove him back with staff strikes. 6
- Used the staff in close combat against Hanzō, whose swordsmanship was described as formidable. 6
- His taijutsu was at its highest level during the Land of Rain campaign. 6
- Passed down staff techniques such as Adamantine Staff: Gale, later used by Asuma. 233
Fire and Wood Release
Hiruzen retained access to powerful Fire Release and Wood Release techniques in his later years.
- Countered Danzō’s Wind Release and summoning techniques with Fire Release and Wood Release. 141
- Used Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Flower Crimson to neutralize Danzō’s Wind Release Shuriken. 141
Reaper Death Seal
Hiruzen’s final technique was the Reaper Death Seal, used to kill Danzō at the cost of his own life.
- Restrained Danzō physically before completing the hand seals. 199
- Summoned the Death God, which seized both combatants’ souls. 199
- Used the technique as his final lesson on the resolve required to bear the Hokage’s name. 199
Limitations
- Failed to master the Flying Thunder God Technique despite studying it from the Scroll of Seals. 18
- His physical condition and chakra reserves declined with age, though his ninjutsu mastery ensured that his combat ability remained formidable. 227
- By the time of his final battle with Danzō, prolonged combat caused his hand holding Enma to tremble. 198
