Background / History
Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, Konoha’s White Fang. As a child, he witnessed Sakumo spar evenly with Orochimaru, an encounter that gave him an early understanding of the destructive scale of Kage-level combat and deepened his pride in his father. 28
He enrolled in the Ninja Academy and met Might Guy after Sakumo identified Guy as a future rival with extraordinary conviction. Kakashi initially underestimated Guy, but Guy introduced himself as the man who would become stronger than anyone else. 34
Following the public disgrace surrounding Sakumo’s abandoned mission, Sakumo arranged for Orochimaru to become Kakashi’s adoptive father. Sakumo then faked his suicide and became Orochimaru’s hidden shadow, while Orochimaru openly took Kakashi into his home, protecting him from Danzō’s interest. 41
Under Orochimaru and, later, Minato’s instruction, Kakashi developed at an abnormal pace: he graduated at five, became a Chūnin at six, and had already completed numerous B-rank missions by age eight. He was assigned to a team with Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha under Minato. 45 47
Rin’s death traumatised Kakashi and left him questioning whether strength or the life of a ninja had any meaning. Orochimaru supported him through the aftermath, though Kakashi remained deeply changed by the loss. 107
Kakashi later discovered Root’s role in Sakumo’s downfall. Rather than act recklessly against Danzō, he considered the political consequences for Orochimaru’s position and infiltrated Root’s affairs. During the conflict, he saved Kinoe and fought alongside him against Root operatives. 127 128
Orochimaru, Minato, and Tsunade subsequently modified Kakashi’s body using Yamato’s cells and White Zetsu-derived genetic serum, intending to strengthen his future growth and provide a counter to Obito’s space-time ninjutsu. The procedure restored his Sharingan and enhanced his abilities. 144 147
After learning that Obito was alive and responsible for the masked man’s actions, Kakashi chose to confront him personally. He later reunited with Sakumo, learning that his father had survived and had spent years protecting both Konoha and Kakashi as Orochimaru’s shadow. 190
Kakashi ultimately defeated Obito with Tsunade’s assistance and mastered the Flying Thunder God Technique during the battle. 200
Personality
Kakashi is serious, talented, and highly competitive from childhood. He initially believes he has already surpassed ordinary Academy graduates and dismisses Guy’s potential until repeated encounters establish their rivalry. 40 43
He is an analytical fighter who gathers intelligence during combat, calculates an opponent’s weaknesses, and adapts his approach rather than relying on direct force alone. This tendency allows him to remain competitive even against opponents whose raw strength differs from his own. 80 83 210
Despite his reserved and occasionally blunt manner, Kakashi is protective of comrades. He asks Orochimaru to guide Rin and Obito because he believes their support is necessary for him to perform at his best, and he risks himself to save Kinoe after recognizing him as a victim of Root. 77 128
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Kakashi possesses a Sharingan, later supported through Yamato-cell and White Zetsu serum modification. Its perception lets him detect otherwise hidden threats and copy ninjutsu. 128 143 147
- Detects Transparent Release users and other difficult-to-see attacks. 128
- Copies ninjutsu during his spar with Shisui. 147
- Uses a Mangekyō space-time technique to oppose Obito’s intangibility and travel through a Kamui vortex. 190 202
- The Mangekyō’s chakra burden was serious enough to require body modification and sealing-jutsu support. 143 144
Lightning Release
Kakashi employs several advanced Lightning Release techniques, including Orochimaru’s Purple Lightning. 77
- Purple Lightning / Purple Electricity — Used in combat against Root operatives and during his spar with Shisui. 128 146
- Chidori Senbon — A needle-based Lightning Release technique used against Shisui. 146
- Hatake Style Sword Technique: Lightning Flash — Channels his swordsmanship and lightning into a rapid blade attack. 80
Hatake-Style Swordsmanship
Kakashi inherited Hatake-style swordsmanship from Sakumo, whose style emphasizes overwhelming speed. His technique remains below Sakumo’s in pure sword skill, but his broader ninjutsu and speed eventually surpass his father’s. 80 231
- Uses his right hand as a blade to execute Hatake-style techniques. 80
- Combines swordsmanship with Lightning Release. 80
- Fought Asuma’s dual chakra blades with fierce, sustained blade pressure. 78
Genjutsu
Kakashi can use deception to create openings against stronger physical fighters.
- Genjutsu: Fox Heart Technique — Used against Might Guy during the Chūnin Exam final. 83
- Uses genjutsu and battlefield calculation to offset differences in direct combat ability. 210
Flying Thunder God Technique
Kakashi learns the Flying Thunder God after Orochimaru gives him a scroll, reasoning that his Mangekyō space-time ability may help him understand it. 190
- Uses kunai engraved with Pakkun’s Dog Head as teleportation markers. 202 231
- Immediately masters the technique’s Second Step after learning it. 200
- Uses the technique for rapid battlefield reinforcement. 200 202
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White Fang Shortsword — A short sword inherited from Sakumo; Kakashi draws it when becoming serious in battle. 78 80
- Raijin’s Sword — Used alongside Chidori Senbon and Purple Electricity against Shisui. 146
- Flying Thunder God kunai — Marked with Pakkun’s Dog Head for teleportation. 202 231
- Forehead protector — Used to cover his Sharingan when not actively employing it. 231
Relationships
- Hatake Sakumo — Father and original mentor in Hatake-style swordsmanship. Sakumo faked his death, became Orochimaru’s shadow, and later reunited with Kakashi. 28 41 190
- Orochimaru — Adoptive father and principal benefactor. He trained Kakashi, protected him after Sakumo’s apparent death, supported him after Rin’s loss, and organized his body modification. 41 107 144
- Minato Namikaze — Former team leader and later Flying Thunder God mentor. Minato entrusted Kakashi’s early training and supported his decision to confront Obito. 45 190
- Rin Nohara — Teammate whose death left Kakashi traumatised and questioning the purpose of strength. 47 107

- Might Guy — Long-standing rival. Their relationship begins after Sakumo directs Kakashi to meet Guy and develops through repeated sparring and mutual respect. 34 80 83
- Kinoe / Yamato — Ally whom Kakashi saves from Root; later undergoes the same modification procedure with Kakashi. 128 144
- Sasuke Uchiha — Student of Team 7. Itachi specifically requests that Kakashi train Sasuke strictly. 177 178
