Compared with Divination, neither Arithmancy nor Muggle Studies was particularly popular.
Professor Septima Vector was a middle-aged witch.
Unlike Trelawney's mystical ramblings, her Arithmancy class had been steeped in rigor from the moment one set out for the classroom.
After entering the door beside the library on the second floor, following the corridor to the fork, and turning right, they would find a door with a combination lock.
There was a quadratic equation written on the blackboard to the left, while a corresponding solution guide sat atop the box on the right.
By the time Hermione arrived, Vincent had already turned the combination lock to the correct numbers.
"You solved it?"
"Yeah. Exponential equations aren't difficult."
She glanced at the problem on the blackboard, pursed her lips, and followed him into the classroom.
Inside was a small, well-lit room, with complex formulas and mathematical problems covering the walls.
An old-fashioned pendulum clock hung above the blackboard. Professor Vector, dressed in dark crimson robes, stood at the lectern beneath it with her back to the students, writing a long string of numbers on the blackboard.
"Welcome. I think we can begin class now." Vector turned to face the students who had already taken their seats.
She removed the rimless glasses perched on her nose.
"Arithmancy has been used by wizards for over two thousand years. It can help people analyze their own abilities and develop their intellectual potential.
"It can also help people overcome difficulties and point out the path of their future development."
She got straight to the point without any of that mystical nonsense.
"Please open your textbooks to the first page." Vector wrote a familiar name in the air with her wand.
"Following the chart in your textbook, convert the letters in his name into personality numbers."
