Background
Dumbledore was an extraordinarily gifted Hogwarts student. He earned exceptional praise in his N.E.W.T. examinations, served as both Prefect and Head Boy, received the Barnabus Finkley Prize for Outstanding Spell-Casting, represented British youth in the Wizengamot, and won a gold medal at the Cairo International Alchemical Conference. He also corresponded with Nicolas Flamel during his school years. 279
His family tragedy shaped his later distrust of power. After Ariana Dumbledore's Obscurus killed their mother Kendra, Albus abandoned his plans to travel and returned home to care for Ariana and his younger brother, Aberforth. In Godric's Hollow, he met Gellert Grindelwald, whose ambitions and obsession with the Deathly Hallows drew Albus into a dangerous period of his life. 279
Dumbledore later defeated Grindelwald alone in 1945 and took the Elder Wand from him. Although he had previously taught Defense Against the Dark Arts, the Ministry barred him from returning to that post even after Grindelwald's defeat. 498 810
He visited Tom Riddle at a Muggle orphanage, investigated the boy's history, demonstrated magic to him, and personally invited him to Hogwarts. Tom's hostility and fascination with power would later become central to Dumbledore's greatest failure and responsibility. 1048
Dumbledore has served as Hogwarts' Headmaster since 1969; by the time of the Ministry's concerns over his influence, he had held the position for twenty-six years. 7
Appearance
Dumbledore is an elderly wizard with a long silver beard, visible wrinkles, sapphire-blue eyes, and half-moon spectacles. Despite his age, he remains physically agile and carries himself with calm assurance. 31 475 1316 1333

Personality
Dumbledore is gentle, patient, and often playful. He jokes with students, shares sweets, plays Gwent, and treats Vincent Wayne with an unusual degree of familiarity. His warmth does not diminish his authority; when confronted by Ministry interference, he can be quietly intimidating and unwavering in his defense of Hogwarts and its students. 31 722 1136 1231
His defining flaw is his fear of wielding political power. Having pursued power alongside Grindelwald and suffered devastating personal consequences, Dumbledore views authority as a corrosive force and repeatedly refuses positions such as Minister for Magic. 35 101 381
Dumbledore is also calculating and secretive. He tests promising students, withholds information until he considers it necessary, maneuvers the Hogwarts Board of Governors, and uses unfolding events to expose hidden enemies. He prefers second chances and rehabilitation, but will make difficult preparations when Voldemort's return leaves no safer alternative. 153 257 551 696
