Ch. 21Possible Doubts

Uzumaki Gengetsu and his team fought two Mist Ninja squads after the enemy lured them from the ruins. Though Gengetsu’s powerful technique turned the ambush around, a Mist Ninja Jonin escaped after recognizing him, and the team continued the mission with reinforcements nearby.

  • Uzumaki Gengetsu killed two Mist Ninja Chunin with Water Severing Wave as Sarutobi Kazuhara and the others counterattacked.
  • Gengetsu created four Shadow Clones, whose Rasenshuriken devastated four Mist Ninja and left Uchiha Shinsui and Kanzuki Chiba caught in the blast’s aftermath.
  • Sarutobi Kazuhara defeated his Jonin opponent while Gengetsu’s group drove off another Jonin, who identified Gengetsu before escaping into the mist.
  • Sarutobi Kazuhara decided to end the mission, but Gengetsu urged him to continue because reinforcements were nearby.
  • Gengetsu treated the team’s injuries and suspected Danzo and the advisors had arranged the mission because they still doubted him.

Ch. 22A Troubling Situation

Gengetsu and his team escaped the Mist Ninja by disguising Shadow Clones, but learned that the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist were pursuing them. While hiding in a cave, Gengetsu studied sealing scrolls and found techniques that could strengthen his team, though the Mind's Eye of the Kagura scroll was incomplete.

  • Kanzuki Chiba dyed Gengetsu's hair black, and Gengetsu sent Shadow Clones disguised as his teammates toward Konoha to mislead the Mist Ninja.
  • The Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist found the battlefield and decided to pursue the clones heading toward Konoha, planning to intercept the real team at the border if necessary.
  • Gengetsu sensed that the Seven Ninja Swordsmen had destroyed his clones, so Sarutobi Kazuhara sent a monkey with a warning to the village and led the team onward cautiously.
  • In a hidden cave, Gengetsu used thirty Shadow Clones to study sealing scrolls while Kanzuki Chiba and Uchiha Shinsui struggled to understand them.
  • Gengetsu's Shadow Clone found instructions for making Exploding Tags, and Gengetsu discovered an incomplete scroll for the Uzumaki Clan's Mind's Eye of the Kagura sensory technique.

Ch. 23A Dire Situation (Part 2)

Gengetsu and his teammates encountered Mist Ninja while searching the final ruin, and Gengetsu’s powerful wind techniques helped them win the opening clash. The Mist Ninja’s hidden-mist tactics and fast swordsmen forced the team to retreat, where twelve more Mist Ninja blocked their path.

  • Gengetsu studied the Second Hokage’s chakra-sensing technique and the Mind’s Eye of the Kagura, but had not mastered either.
  • Sarutobi Kazuhara led Gengetsu, Uchiha Shinsui, and Kanzuki Chiba toward the final ruin, where they ran into four Mist Ninja.
  • Gengetsu and Uchiha Shinsui combined wind and fire attacks, and Gengetsu’s tornado cleared the mist and killed one Mist Ninja.
  • The team pursued the survivors, and Gengetsu and Sarutobi Kazuhara used Water Severing Wave and Vacuum Serial Waves to kill two more Mist Ninja.
  • Two Mist Ninja Jonin used the dense mist and Silent Killing Technique to destroy Gengetsu’s Shadow Clones, while one clone severely injured a Jonin before disappearing.
  • Gengetsu’s team tried to withdraw, but twelve Mist Ninja appeared ahead and blocked their path.

Ch. 24The Ultimate Move Is Art

Gengetsu and his companions fought to escape a Mist Ninja ambush, but their retreat turned into a desperate battle against pursuing Jonin. After Gengetsu unleashed a fused water-and-wind technique that appeared to defeat two attackers, a blade flashed toward him, leaving his fate uncertain.

  • Sarutobi Kazuhara ordered Gengetsu, Uchiha Shinsui, and Kanzuki Chiba to flee separately, but Gengetsu unleashed his Yin Seal and created Shadow Clones to cover their escape.
  • Sarutobi Kazuhara and Uchiha Shinsui killed a Mist Ninja Jonin, though Shinsui suffered a grave abdominal wound, and Gengetsu treated him as the group fled.
  • When more Mist Ninja caught up, Sarutobi Kazuhara turned back to hold them off, while Gengetsu went to support him and sent Kanzuki Chiba onward with Shinsui.
  • Gengetsu fought a nimble Mist Ninja Jonin, tricked him into striking nonfatal parts of his body, and blasted him away with a punch before two more Mist Ninja arrived.
  • Gengetsu combined Hard Vortex Tornado and Tornado into Hard Vortex Water Dragon, apparently killing the two attackers, but a blade flashed toward him as he knelt from exhaustion.

Ch. 25Seven Down, Two Gone

Minato arrived to rescue Gengetsu and his allies from the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, turning the battle in Konoha’s favor. Gengetsu reunited with Shinsui and Chiba, treated the wounded, and learned that two of the Seven had escaped.

  • Minato and Choza arrived as the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist confronted Gengetsu’s group, and Sarutobi Kazuhara withdrew with Gengetsu.
  • Choza knocked Raiga away, while Minato swiftly killed three Mist Jonin and led the counterattack against the Seven.
  • Gengetsu decided to try learning the Flying Thunder God Technique after witnessing Minato’s speed.
  • Gengetsu found Shinsui and Chiba beside a dead Mist Jonin and treated Shinsui’s chest wound and Kazuhara’s injuries.
  • Minato rejoined the group and said that two of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist had escaped.

Ch. 26The Importance of Talent

After returning from the failed mission, Gengetsu reflected on his combat weaknesses, trained his sensory and lightning abilities, and made it back to Konoha with his comrades. He celebrated receiving his first mission reward with Kushina and Minato.

  • Gengetsu treated the wounded after the battle, and Uchiha Shinsui thanked him as he carried the exhausted Gengetsu on the journey back.
  • Minato asked Gengetsu to assess the mission, and Gengetsu identified his lack of speed and a suitable combat style as weaknesses before declaring his goal of becoming like the First Hokage.
  • Gengetsu tested his newly mastered Mind's Eye of the Kagura and detected three ANBU ninja three kilometers away; Minato revealed they had been assigned to protect him.
  • Gengetsu used Lightning Release Chakra to stimulate his cells, paralyzing himself, and Uchiha Shinsui carried him while Kanzuki Chiba scolded him.
  • Gengetsu and the others returned to Konoha, and he celebrated his first mission reward over lunch with Kushina and Minato.

Ch. 27Inevitability

Gengetsu trained to develop Lightning Release Chakra Mode, exchanged research materials for three techniques, and began learning Lightning Release: Ground Walk. After successfully striking a tree, he experimented with restraining lightning in his hand and drew the training ground’s attention.

  • Gengetsu experimented cautiously with activating cells for Lightning Release Chakra Mode and recorded his findings while continuing to develop Ice Release.
  • At the team’s first shared training session, Gengetsu divided his Shadow Clones among training tasks and watched Uchiha Shinsui spar with Sarutobi Kazuhara.
  • Gengetsu considered the Sharingan’s power and its possible effects on Uchiha temperament, but decided not to give Orochimaru his theory about stimulating the pineal gland.
  • Gengetsu brought his Mind's Eye of the Kagura materials to the village and received Water Body Flicker Technique, Lightning Release: Ground Walk, and Hell Viewing Technique.
  • Gengetsu learned to use Lightning Release: Ground Walk, then tried to restrain its lightning in his right hand to begin developing Chidori, drawing everyone’s attention.

Ch. 28A Wonderful Misunderstanding

Gengetsu developed Chidori, refined it into Raikiri, and showed Uchiha Shinsui how the Sharingan could overcome the technique’s flaw. Elsewhere, Orochimaru showed Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone his experiments on Hashirama Cells, leaving Gengetsu wary and asking what Orochimaru knew about the Senju and Uzumaki clans.

  • Gengetsu refined his hand seals and developed Chidori, then tested its lightning damage on a tree.
  • Gengetsu demonstrated Chidori at high speed, cutting through three trees and identifying the risk of losing track of an enemy during a charge.
  • Gengetsu explained Raikiri’s flaw to Uchiha Shinsui and said the Sharingan could counter it, exciting Shinsui.
  • Orochimaru showed Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone failed experiments using Hashirama Cells and offered him the chance to gain the First Hokage’s power.
  • Gengetsu questioned whether Orochimaru’s test subjects were Konoha ninja or civilians, then said he would not betray Orochimaru’s trust and asked about the Senju and Uzumaki clans.

Ch. 29Discussing Ideals with Uncle Snake

Gengetsu told Orochimaru that he wanted to pursue longevity and eternity by forging a path others could follow, then shared his account of the Sage of Six Paths, Kaguya, and their descendants. Orochimaru was fascinated by the secrets but remained skeptical, and asked Gengetsu what he wanted from him.

  • Gengetsu challenged Orochimaru to explain the scale of his ambition, and Orochimaru declared that he wanted to learn every ninjutsu, become the ultimate individual, and attain immortality.
  • Gengetsu claimed they were kindred spirits and said surviving a near-death encounter had made him swear to pursue longevity and eternity.
  • Gengetsu proposed forging a path to immortality so that loved ones could advance alongside him, surprising Orochimaru.
  • Gengetsu linked Sage Art and the Great Toad Sage to the Sage of Six Paths, then identified the Sage as Hagoromo Otsutsuki and described the lineages of Indra and Asura.
  • Gengetsu revealed his account of Kaguya Otsutsuki, her sons Hagoromo and Hamura, and their battle to seal her away.
  • Orochimaru reacted with interest but questioned Gengetsu's purpose, asking what he wanted from him.

Ch. 30First Look at Immortal Arts

Gengetsu weighed the risks of what Orochimaru might do with the knowledge he had gained, then decided to pursue Sage Art while continuing his secret studies. He learned that Shikkotsu Forest’s Sage Art was difficult to master and that Tsunade had failed to learn it because she could not calm her heart, and he asked Katsuyu to tell Sage Katsuyu he intended to try.

  • Gengetsu considered how Orochimaru might use the secrets of the Rinnegan, Sage Art, and Wood Release, and chose to keep his former-life cloning knowledge to himself.
  • Gengetsu decided to ask Tsunade for support before transplanting Hashirama Cells and to focus on secretly learning from Orochimaru for now.
  • Gengetsu summoned Little Katsuyu and asked whether Shikkotsu Forest had a Sage Art inheritance.
  • Little Katsuyu explained that Shikkotsu Forest’s Sage Art was especially difficult to cultivate and that Tsunade had failed because she could not calm her heart and become one with nature.
  • Gengetsu learned that Hashirama Senju had been the last person from the Senju Clan to master Sage Mode there, then asked Little Katsuyu to inform Sage Katsuyu that he intended to try.

Ch. 31Wet Bone Forest

Gengetsu entered Shikkotsu Forest to begin Sage Art training with help from Little Katsuyu. After learning how Shikkotsu Forest’s Sage Art differed from Mount Myōboku’s and how Sage Katsuyu absorbed Natural Energy into her cells, he headed off to cultivate with new questions about the nature of Sage Chakra.

  • Gengetsu sent a Shadow Clone to Orochimaru's Laboratory Base and used Little Katsuyu’s Reverse Summoning Technique to travel to Shikkotsu Forest.
  • Sage Katsuyu explained that Little Katsuyu would absorb excess Natural Energy from Gengetsu to keep his Sage Art training safer.
  • Sage Katsuyu described how Shikkotsu Forest’s Natural Energy and Sage Art differed from Mount Myōboku’s because each sacred place bore its Sage’s influence.
  • Gengetsu realized Sage Katsuyu fused Natural Energy into her cells and speculated about the different forms of energy and the Sages’ longevity.
  • Sage Katsuyu praised Gengetsu’s curiosity but did not answer how she first made her cells absorb Natural Energy, then directed him to begin cultivating.

Ch. 32I Knew I Wasn’t the Protagonist

Gengetsu learned how Sage cultivation worked but failed to sense Natural Energy, so he revised his long-term training plans and pursued ways to fund his experiments. He ended the chapter meeting his teammates after Uchiha Shinsui mastered Raikiri and challenging him to a taijutsu spar.

  • Little Katsuyu explained that Sage cultivation nurtured cells until they could absorb Natural Energy, and Gengetsu speculated about the Three Great Sacred Places and Gamamaru’s motives.
  • Gengetsu spent hours trying to sense Natural Energy without success and decided to make Sage Art cultivation a long-term goal.
  • Back in Konoha, Gengetsu updated his training plans, including developing Kekkei Tōta, mastering Adamantine Sealing Chains, and pursuing several other techniques.
  • Gengetsu decided to make money by creating Exploding Tags and traded Raikiri for Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags.
  • Gengetsu saw Uchiha Shinsui demonstrate his newly mastered Raikiri, congratulated him, and challenged him to a taijutsu spar.

Ch. 33A Despair-Inducing Fate

In Konoha Year 43, Minato took Gengetsu and Kakashi on a confidential mission to the Ancient Kingdom of Roran to protect Queen Sara, find Mukade, and reseal the Dragon Vein. There, Gengetsu saw Naruto and realized Minato had not escaped his future fate, prompting him to resolve to change events more decisively.

  • Kushina scolded Gengetsu for neglecting his Sealing Technique training until Minato said Gengetsu would join his mission as a medical ninja and sealing specialist.
  • Gengetsu met Minato, Choza Akimichi, Aburame Shibi, and Kakashi at the village entrance, and the team traveled toward the Land of Wind.
  • Minato revealed that the mission was to protect Queen Sara, find Mukade, and reseal the Dragon Vein in the Ancient Kingdom of Roran.
  • Minato split the team, assigning Gengetsu and Kakashi to protect Sara while he, Choza Akimichi, and Aburame Shibi searched for Mukade.
  • In Roran, Gengetsu recognized Naruto and watched Minato rescue him from puppets, realizing Naruto had not recognized his own father.
  • Gengetsu concluded that his actions had not changed Minato's future and resolved to stir things up to alter fate.

Ch. 34The Rising Storm

Gengetsu followed Naruto and discovered that Mukade was using the Dragon Vein to power a puppet weapons factory, so he and Sara shut down its energy supply. The factory stopped, but Mukade appeared and confronted Gengetsu, Sara, and Naruto.

  • Gengetsu and Kakashi followed Naruto and learned that Sara was the Queen of Roran.
  • Gengetsu recognized the puppet-controlled parade and led Kakashi to the underground factory using the pipes as a guide.
  • Gengetsu used the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style to absorb Dragon Vein Energy, then stabilized it with Five Elements Sealing.
  • Sara sealed the Dragon Vein transfer point, stopping the puppet weapons factory.
  • Mukade appeared and confronted Sara, Naruto, and Gengetsu.

Ch. 35Stealing the Spotlight

Gengetsu and the Konoha team fought Anrokuzan, whose Dragon Vein power let him regenerate, while Naruto and Sara worked to evacuate Roran’s people and cut off the energy supply. After Anrokuzan emerged in a gigantic puppet form, Minato split the team into three groups to find a weakness and stop him.

  • Sara confronted Anrokuzan and ordered him to stop building puppet weapons and free Roran’s enslaved people, but he sent his puppets to attack.
  • Gengetsu pierced Anrokuzan’s head and fought through the puppet army while Naruto and Sara rescued civilians and Kakashi destroyed puppets with Exploding Tags.
  • Anrokuzan transformed into a six-legged puppet body, but Gengetsu blasted him into a crater with a water dragon, Rasengan, and Raikiri before warning that the Dragon Vein could restore him.
  • Minato arrived, and Gengetsu explained that Sara had to cut off the Dragon Vein energy to prevent Anrokuzan from regenerating.
  • Anrokuzan emerged as a colossal puppet weapon, so Minato divided the team into three groups; Gengetsu created four Clones and asked Kakashi if he was ready.

Ch. 36The Dragon Vein’s Consciousness

Gengetsu and Kakashi tried to defeat Anrokuzan, but the puppet survived their attacks and overwhelmed Choza Akimichi and Aburame Shibi before pursuing Sara. After rejoining the others at the Dragon Vein Seal Site, Gengetsu realized the Dragon Vein had a consciousness that had tried to escape into his body, leaving him worried that part of it remained inside him.

  • Gengetsu and Kakashi attacked Anrokuzan with Hard Vortex Water Dragons and Exploding Tags, burying the puppet beneath the collapsing factory.
  • Anrokuzan burst from the ruins and knocked Gengetsu and Kakashi unconscious with a barrage of light bullets.
  • Aburame Shibi trapped Anrokuzan with insects while Choza Akimichi enlarged himself and hurled the puppet away, but Dragon Vein Energy empowered it and it swept them aside.
  • Gengetsu woke among the ruins, treated the injured Choza and Aburame Shibi, and went with the others to the Dragon Vein Seal Site.
  • Gengetsu saw Minato and Naruto unleash a Yin-Yang Spiral Sphere as Sara severed the Dragon Vein Energy.
  • Gengetsu realized the Dragon Vein had a consciousness that had tried to escape into his body and feared that some of it remained inside him.

Ch. 37Potential (Third Update)

After returning from Rōran, Gengetsu revealed that he had sealed some Dragon Vein Energy inside himself and demonstrated its power to Minato and the others. At Konoha, Hiruzen classified the matter as top secret, while Danzo pushed for Gengetsu to join Root so the village could study the energy.

  • Minato sealed the Dragon Vein in Rōran, and Naruto and Yamato returned to the future with their memories erased as Minato and Sara bid them farewell.
  • At the Land of Fire border, Gengetsu showed Minato the seal containing Dragon Vein Energy, and Minato warned that its chakra resembled a Tailed Beast's.
  • Gengetsu released a small amount of Dragon Vein Energy and used it to form a powerful lightning spear, convincing the group that the energy enhanced chakra and its shape transformation.
  • Minato urged the group to keep Gengetsu's power secret, and the team returned to Konoha the following afternoon.
  • Minato reported Gengetsu's condition to Hiruzen Sarutobi, who classified it as top secret and told Minato to monitor him.
  • Danzo proposed bringing Gengetsu into Root to research Dragon Vein Energy, but Hiruzen said the matter required careful consideration and Gengetsu's consent.

Ch. 38Telling Stories

Gengetsu told Minato about Danzo’s interest in the Dragon Vein and resolved to address the danger. He met the sealed Dragon Vein’s consciousness, Ancestor Dragon, and tried to influence it with stories before spotting Jiraiya the next afternoon.

  • Minato returned home and told Gengetsu that Danzo would likely pursue the Dragon Vein, while Gengetsu considered joining the ANBU and decided to deal with the danger.
  • Gengetsu used Little Katsuyu to reach Shikkotsu Forest and entered the seal holding the purple Dragon Vein consciousness.
  • Gengetsu learned the creature called itself Ancestor Dragon and discussed cooperation, but Ancestor Dragon claimed it could survive as long as Natural Energy remained.
  • Gengetsu repeatedly told Ancestor Dragon a story about Obito helping an old lady, irritating the dragon until it ordered him to stop.
  • Gengetsu left the seal and considered earning Ancestor Dragon’s approval to develop an Ancestor Dragon Chakra Mode.
  • The next afternoon, Gengetsu spotted Jiraiya sneaking around on his way to meet his teammates for training.

Ch. 39The Surprise Uncle Snake Brought

Gengetsu persuaded Jiraiya to help complete the Fire Sealing Method while teasing him about Tsunade. At Orochimaru’s hidden laboratory, Gengetsu learned that Orochimaru had perfected the Cloning Technique and was asked to control a newly created living body with the Spirit Transformation Technique.

  • Gengetsu secretly followed Jiraiya to the Hot Springs District, then knocked him into a bathhouse and was thrown into a women’s bathhouse in retaliation.
  • Gengetsu offered Jiraiya a way to win Tsunade over in exchange for help completing an incomplete Sealing Technique.
  • Gengetsu drew the Fire Sealing Method for Jiraiya, who agreed to study and perfect it.
  • Orochimaru showed Gengetsu a living body without a soul, created with Hashirama Cells and the Cloning Technique.
  • Orochimaru praised Gengetsu’s Yin-Yang Theory and asked whether his Shadow Clone could use the Spirit Transformation Technique to control the body.

Ch. 40Wood Release Returns

Gengetsu used Spirit Transformation to test a Hashirama-cell Clone Body and discovered it could wield powerful Wood Release, though its cells became uncontrollable when overused. After the clone’s memories returned to his main body, Gengetsu considered developing a more stable clone and decided he needed money for a laboratory.

  • Gengetsu’s spiritual energy entered the Clone Body, and he awoke on the operating table before testing its chakra with Orochimaru.
  • Gengetsu studied Hashirama Senju’s Wood Release techniques and successfully used Great Forest Technique and Tree World Advent against Orochimaru.
  • The Clone Body’s Hashirama Cells became uncontrollable after Gengetsu overused Wood Release, and the body grew into a tree as his spiritual energy ran out.
  • Gengetsu’s main body received the clone’s memories and concluded that combining his cells with Hashirama Cells might create a stronger, stable Clone Body.
  • Gengetsu approached Sarutobi Kazuhara and proposed that they become Bounty Hunters to fund his own laboratory.
