Ch. 41The Land of Rain

Gengetsu prepared for his first team mission after deciding to earn money through missions rather than bounty hunting. While escorting a merchant caravan into the Land of Rain, he stayed alert and wondered about Nagato and the Rinnegan.

  • Gengetsu’s suggestion to become a bounty hunter alarmed Sarutobi Kazuhara, who instead dismissed the team and told them to meet at the Hokage Tower the next morning for a mission.
  • Gengetsu made Exploding Tags at home and told Ancestor Dragon a creation myth starring Pangu and Ao Cang, stopping the story just before the dragon race unified the Four Seas.
  • Gengetsu’s team met their employer and set out to escort a merchant caravan to the Land of Rain for a B-rank mission.
  • After nearly half a month of peaceful travel through the Land of Fire, Gengetsu sensed the surroundings more frequently and made a Shadow Clone to extend his range upon entering the rainy Land of Rain.
  • During a rest stop, Gengetsu thought about Nagato’s Rinnegan and used Mind’s Eye of the Kagura to scan the area.

Ch. 42The Leaked Information

Gengetsu and his Konoha team fought attackers posing as Rain Ninja defectors, while Gengetsu suspected someone had hired them specifically to capture or kill him. After Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone struck down several wandering samurai, the enemy ninja targeted it with coordinated attacks.

  • Gengetsu sensed at least four Jonin and eight Chunin approaching the caravan, and Sarutobi Kazuhara ordered the team to prepare for battle.
  • The Konoha team fortified and concealed the convoy, then split up to meet the attackers; Katsuyu relayed information between them.
  • Gengetsu encountered Rain Ninja defectors and wandering samurai, and realized the attackers knew about him and had been hired to take him alive or kill him.
  • Gengetsu used a Shadow Clone and Lightning Release to incapacitate the samurai, while the original body spread electricity across the water.
  • Straw Hat Man and another defector attacked Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone with Wind and Fire Release, and a blade of light suddenly flashed toward it.

Ch. 43A Desperate Battle (Third Update)

Gengetsu was trapped by a coordinated ambush while Uchiha Shinsui fought off attackers targeting both Gengetsu and the Sharingan. Shinsui defeated his opponents at great cost, and Sarutobi Kazuhara prepared to push through his own battle to reach him.

  • A hidden swordsman destroyed Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone, and four Chunin sealed off Gengetsu’s Hidden Mist sensing ability.
  • Gengetsu refused Little Katsuyu’s offer to use the Reverse Summoning Technique and told his allies to avoid direct confrontation while he stayed behind.
  • Uchiha Shinsui lured the Masked Man and two Chunin into a forest trap, then used Lightning Release and Shadow Clones to kill the Masked Man.
  • Shinsui collapsed from his injuries and depleted Chakra after defeating the attackers, but reached for a Soldier Pill and resolved to save Gengetsu.
  • Little Katsuyu told Sarutobi Kazuhara that Shinsui had defeated the enemies but was badly wounded, and Kazuhara prepared to risk his life against the two Rain Ninja Defectors.

Ch. 44Trump Card (Part One)

Gengetsu and his Shadow Clones fought Bandage Man and a wandering samurai inside the barrier, while the attackers rushed to finish the mission before reinforcements arrived. Gengetsu revealed that Bandage Man had mistaken his main body for a Shadow Clone, leaving the enemy alarmed by how he had stopped the chakra-conducting Kunai.

  • Gengetsu sensed a wandering samurai kill one of his Shadow Clones with lightning-fast swordsmanship, while another Shadow Clone defeated the attackers’ lackeys.
  • The wandering samurai and Bandage Man killed Gengetsu’s remaining Shadow Clone after fighting it together.
  • Bandage Man and the wandering samurai confronted Gengetsu, who created two more Shadow Clones and fought them with ninjutsu.
  • Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone clashed with Bandage Man, using Chidori and Monster Strength while holding him off as another clone restrained the wandering samurai.
  • Bandage Man grabbed Gengetsu’s left wrist and thrust his Kunai toward his right hand, but Gengetsu stopped the blade with Wind Release Chakra and revealed he was the main body.

Ch. 45Trump Card (Part 2)

Gengetsu defeated Bandage Man and drove Fei and the other enemies into retreat with his Lightning and Water Release techniques. After restoring his Chakra with the Yin Seal, he pursued them despite Little Katsuyu warning him that Kazuhara had advised against chasing them.

  • Gengetsu pierced Bandage Man with the Dragon Vein Chidori Sharp Spear, then immobilized him with lightning Senbon.
  • Bandage Man stopped the Chunin from dispelling the barrier and told them to trust Fei.
  • Gengetsu and his Shadow Clones attacked Fei with Wind Release, but Fei escaped using a Water Clone and was left wounded.
  • Gengetsu summoned a massive Water Dragon Bullet that broke through the Earth Wall after the Chunin dispelled the barrier, and Fei and the enemies began retreating.
  • Gengetsu restored his Chakra with the Yin Seal and pursued the retreating enemies despite Little Katsuyu relaying Kazuhara's warning.

Ch. 46Waterless World

Gengetsu defeated the attackers, discovered their connection to Root, and returned to camp with Kanzuki Chiba and Uchiha Shinsui. On the journey through the Land of Rain, he conceived a new sensing technique that could use water vapor to extend his range.

  • Gengetsu killed Scarface and Straw Hat Man, then found a Cursed Seal on Fei’s tongue confirming Fei was from Root and killed the remaining captives.
  • Gengetsu suspected Danzo and Orochimaru were behind the attack and resolved to find a way to make Danzo behave.
  • Kanzuki Chiba and Uchiha Shinsui found Gengetsu, and he learned the attackers had also targeted Shinsui’s Sharingan.
  • Gengetsu treated Shinsui and told Sarutobi Kazuhara about Root, but insisted he would report the matter to the Third Hokage himself.
  • While traveling through the Land of Rain, Gengetsu imagined using Chakra-infused water vapor and Mind’s Eye of the Kagura for wide-area sensing, naming the idea the Waterless World Technique.

Ch. 47Qian Yu’s Talent

While training in the Land of Rain, Kanzuki Chiba unexpectedly learned to sense through the rain, and Gengetsu explained how she could develop the ability further. The team continued preparing to return to Konoha, while Sarutobi Kazuhara resolved to protect the young ninja from Root.

  • Kanzuki Chiba joined Gengetsu's rain training, while Sarutobi Kazuhara reflected on Gengetsu's growing strength and the danger posed by Root.
  • After three hours of training, Kanzuki Chiba told Sarutobi Kazuhara she had learned to merge Chakra into the rain and sense her surroundings.
  • Gengetsu confirmed that Kanzuki Chiba could sense across roughly six kilometers, then asked her to try extending her sensing to water vapor.
  • Kanzuki Chiba failed to attach Chakra to water vapor, and Gengetsu explained that doing so would let the technique work wherever moisture was present.
  • Gengetsu offered to teach Kanzuki Chiba the Mind's Eye of the Kagura after they returned to the village, and she excitedly threw herself at him.

Ch. 48Coming Clean

Gengetsu returned to Konoha and told Kushina and Minato that Orochimaru’s experiments with the First Hokage’s cells had targeted him and Uchiha Shinsui. After explaining his knowledge of Yin and Yang Release and the Sage of Six Paths’ descendants, he laid out a plan to make Danzo stop targeting them.

  • Kanzuki Chiba chased Gengetsu after he accidentally knocked her down, while Sarutobi Kazuhara teased Uchiha Shinsui about romance.
  • Sarutobi Kazuhara dismissed the team for three days after they returned to Konoha.
  • Gengetsu went home, ate Kushina and Minato’s meal, and told them about Danzo’s attempt to use the First Hokage’s cells on him and target Shinsui’s Sharingan.
  • Gengetsu explained how Yin and Yang Release could help someone withstand the cells and described the Uchiha, Senju, and Uzumaki lineages’ ties to the Sage of Six Paths.
  • Minato questioned whether they should inform the Third Hokage, but Gengetsu argued they should instead warn Danzo to leave him alone.
  • Gengetsu shared his plan with Kushina and Minato, and Kushina agreed to it.

Ch. 49A Full-Blown Tear-Down Show

After Danzo’s attack on Gengetsu’s squad was exposed, Hiruzen removed Danzo from command of Root and agreed to compensate Gengetsu. Danzo left after accepting Kushina’s demand for ten million ryo.

  • Hiruzen learned from Sarutobi Kazuhara that Gengetsu had Dragon Vein Energy sealed inside him and decided to assign him to the Medical Department before ANBU.
  • Hiruzen confronted Danzo about the attack on Gengetsu’s squad, and Danzo admitted he had acted to eliminate a potential threat to the village.
  • Kushina accused Danzo of targeting Gengetsu, while Gengetsu and Minato argued that Danzo should no longer lead Root.
  • Hiruzen relieved Danzo of command and took Root under his personal control.
  • Kushina demanded ten million ryo in compensation, and Danzo agreed to have the money delivered before leaving.

Ch. 50The Death Wish Continues

After helping Kushina confront Danzo, Xuan Yue told Tsunade that Orochimaru and Danzo had resumed researching Hashirama Cells and tried to recruit her to help establish a laboratory. Tsunade refused until Xuan Yue argued that Sage Art could preserve her body and heal damaged organs, leaving her visibly shaken.

  • Xuan Yue and Kushina celebrated after leaving the Hokage Office, while Minato apologized to Hiruzen Sarutobi and then gave him further information.
  • Xuan Yue went to Shikkotsu Forest to seek Natural Energy, failed to sense it, and found Tsunade there.
  • Xuan Yue told Tsunade that Orochimaru and Danzo were secretly researching Hashirama Cells, and Tsunade reacted with anger and sorrow.
  • Xuan Yue brought Tsunade alcohol and asked her to help establish a laboratory, but she refused because of her hemophobia.
  • Xuan Yue provoked Tsunade by discussing her youthful appearance and Jiraiya's comments, so she flicked him and left a bump on his forehead.
  • Xuan Yue claimed Sage Art could preserve Tsunade's physical condition and repair shattered internal organs, making her eyes turn red.

Ch. 51Unity of Heaven and Man

Gengetsu explained his Unity of Heaven and Man method to Tsunade and secured her help in setting up a laboratory in Shikkotsu Forest. After receiving funding from Danzo and Kushina, he returned to the Sealed Land to tell Ao Cang the tale of the Primordial Ancestor Dragon’s death.

  • Gengetsu told Tsunade that he planned to suppress his emotions with Chakra to sense Natural Energy, and she warned that the method could damage his pineal gland.
  • Tsunade agreed to help Gengetsu experiment, accepted his two hundred thousand ryo, and approved building the laboratory in Shikkotsu Forest.
  • Gengetsu returned to Konoha and received ten million ryo from Danzo, along with an additional million from Minato and Kushina.
  • Gengetsu continued his Primordial World story for Ao Cang, who had become an eager listener, and began telling him of the Ancestor Dragon’s death.

Ch. 52The Balance of Yin and Yang

Gengetsu challenged Ao Cang’s identity and ambitions, leaving him doubting what he truly sought. At Orochimaru’s laboratory, Gengetsu entered a clone with double-tomoe Sharingan and Hashirama Cells, then trapped Orochimaru in genjutsu.

  • Gengetsu told Ao Cang how the Ancestor Dragon sacrificed himself to save the Primordial World and accused Ao Cang of carrying Mukade and Anrokuzan’s ambitions instead of his own.
  • Ao Cang questioned who he was and what he truly pursued, while Gengetsu left the Sealed Land and fell asleep.
  • Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone visited Orochimaru’s laboratory and entered a newly cultivated clone, discovering it had double-tomoe Sharingan and Hashirama Cells.
  • Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone sensed that the Sharingan’s ocular power and the Hashirama Cells complemented and restrained each other.
  • Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone revealed that he had already cast a Sharingan genjutsu on Orochimaru.

Ch. 53An Experiment

Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone experimented with Yang and Yin Release to test how they affected the Sharingan, but the attempt ended in the clone’s death. Back in Konoha, Gengetsu recovered the clone’s memories and concluded that intense emotions had mutated Yin Release Chakra and evolved the Sharingan into the Heart’s Mirror Eye.

  • Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone used a genjutsu and Wood Release to demonstrate its power to Orochimaru, who offered guidance before the base was sealed.
  • After two hours of instruction, Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone asked Orochimaru to observe an experiment on the Sharingan.
  • Gengetsu’s Shadow Clone stimulated the pineal gland with Yang Release Chakra and found that it affected emotions but produced little change in ocular power.
  • When the clone combined Yin and Yang Release Chakra, it suffered intense pain and terrifying visions before its head exploded.
  • Gengetsu awoke in Konoha, recognized the experience as his Shadow Clone’s memories, and identified the Sharingan’s evolution as the Heart’s Mirror Eye.

Ch. 54The First Clone

Gengetsu’s Sharingan experiment revealed how the pineal gland could influence emotion, and he focused on earning money and building a clone research laboratory. After helping Tsunade overcome her fear of blood, he worked with her to begin cultivating clones using Gengetsu Cells and Hashirama Cells.

  • Gengetsu learned from his Shadow Clone that it had evolved a Two-Tomoe Sharingan into a Three-Tomoe Sharingan and discovered that the pineal gland could briefly induce absolute rationality.
  • Gengetsu and Kushina made Exploding Tags while he continued training in Lightning Release Chakra Mode, the Waterless World Technique, and Ice Release.
  • Gengetsu started work at Konoha Hospital, delegated his duties to Shadow Clones, and gave Tsunade money to buy equipment and materials for the Laboratory Base.
  • After Tsunade remained unable to face blood for half a month, Gengetsu stabbed himself to prompt her to overcome her hemophobia.
  • Tsunade recovered her confidence, and she and Gengetsu successfully advanced their cell-fusion research and began cultivating clones within a week.

Ch. 55Character Determines Fate

Gengetsu discussed Sage Mode with Minato and Kushina, explaining its limits and suggesting a Shadow Clone method to extend its duration. Minato then asked Gengetsu to spar with Kakashi, Obito, and Rin to help address their teamwork problems, and Gengetsu agreed despite doubting he could change Kakashi’s outlook.

  • Gengetsu told Minato and Kushina that his Sage Art research had confirmed his deductions, while Minato admitted he had mastered Sage Mode but could not sustain it for long.
  • Gengetsu explained that Minato’s limited Chakra and slow sensing of Natural Energy restricted his Sage Mode, then proposed using a Shadow Clone to prepare Sage Chakra.
  • Minato asked Gengetsu to help improve teamwork among Kakashi, Obito, and Rin, whose squad was struggling with Kakashi’s rigid behavior and Obito’s poor performance.
  • Gengetsu agreed to spar with Minato’s squad, while Kushina bet on Gengetsu and Minato bet on Kakashi and the others.
  • Gengetsu worried that Kakashi’s grief over Hatake Sakumo’s suicide would make him difficult to change, but resolved to do his best.

Ch. 56Terrifying Natural Energy

Gengetsu achieved the Unity of Heaven and Man state by controlling a clone, then discovered he could sense and absorb Natural Energy. His Shadow Clones began uncontrollably proliferating from absorbing too much, threatening to make the same happen to his main body.

  • Tsunade warned Gengetsu that activating the pineal-gland node could cause emotional dysfunction and damage the eyes.
  • Gengetsu used the Spirit Transformation Technique to control the second clone and safely entered the Unity of Heaven and Man state.
  • Gengetsu tested whether the state let him sense Natural Energy by sending out three Shadow Clones with Little Katsuyu.
  • The Shadow Clones sensed Natural Energy and began absorbing it, overwhelming both themselves and the Little Katsuyu assisting them.
  • Little Katsuyu warned that the clones’ uncontrolled proliferation could exhaust their life force and make Gengetsu’s main body proliferate as well.

Ch. 57Sage Jutsu of Shikkotsu Forest

Gengetsu successfully learned Shikkotsu Forest's Sage Art and tested its power against Tsunade. He then attempted Shikkotsu Forest's splitting technique, but produced a malformed Split Body.

  • Gengetsu balanced Natural Energy with his physical and spiritual energy, entered Sage Mode, and discovered it greatly enhanced his vitality, healing, strength, and senses.
  • Gengetsu left the Unity of Heaven and Man state but retained a faint perception of Natural Energy, then sparred with Tsunade for over a hundred exchanges.
  • Gengetsu used Sage Chakra to attempt Shikkotsu Forest's Sage Art, splitting off a malformed body that could not get up.
  • Little Katsuyu told Gengetsu to use the Shadow Clone hand seal to help control his split.

Ch. 58Time to Show Off

Gengetsu successfully used the Split Technique to create a clone and discussed the risks of Sage Mode research with Tsunade. He then joined Minato, Kakashi, Rin, and the late-arriving Obito at the Forest of Death, ready to lead their exercise.

  • Gengetsu created a Split Technique clone, which entered the Unity of Heaven and Man state while his main body left Sage Mode.
  • Gengetsu and Tsunade agreed that they needed to investigate the Unity of Heaven and Man state's aftereffects, and Gengetsu assigned his clone, Uzumaki Gengetsu, to dissect the clone body.
  • Gengetsu returned to Konoha to rest while Tsunade rested, then set out with Minato for the Forest of Death.
  • Gengetsu asked Minato whether Kakashi had mastered the Chidori-derived techniques, but Minato kept his disciple's abilities secret.
  • Gengetsu met Kakashi and Rin at the meeting point, then waited nearly half an hour for Obito to arrive after he stopped to help an old woman.
  • Gengetsu rose to take charge as Kakashi and Obito argued and Rin tried to mediate.

Ch. 59One Against Three

Gengetsu tested Minato’s students in a three-on-one fight and easily defeated Obito and Rin, leaving Kakashi as his final opponent. Kakashi drew his short blade and prepared to face Gengetsu alone.

  • Minato revealed that the team’s mission was to fight Gengetsu, and Gengetsu warned that none of them could beat him one-on-one.
  • Obito charged Gengetsu alone and was quickly struck down, while Gengetsu criticized his overconfidence.
  • Kakashi challenged Gengetsu, but Gengetsu beat him back and countered the team’s coordinated attacks, including Kakashi’s Chidori Sharp Spear.
  • Gengetsu used a water clone and water streams to trap Obito, then knocked him unconscious and swiftly incapacitated Rin.
  • Kakashi stood alone against Gengetsu, drew his short blade, and said he wanted to see the gap between them.

Ch. 60Shadow of the White Fang (Bonus Chapter)

Gengetsu defeated Kakashi in a spar and advised Obito and Rin on their training, offering to teach Rin the Chakra Scalpel. The chapter ended with Kakashi assigned to spar with Rin while Gengetsu looked toward him.

  • Kakashi charged Gengetsu with Lightning Release, but Gengetsu used Lightning Armor and Wind Release to counter him and win their spar.
  • Minato watched Kakashi fight and thought he might revive the White Fang's reputation by combining Lightning Release with the Hatake Sword Technique.
  • Gengetsu challenged Obito to build strength without relying on the Sharingan, and Kakashi noted that Guy had become a taijutsu-focused Chunin.
  • Gengetsu reminded Rin to learn to protect herself and offered to leave a Shadow Clone to teach her the Chakra Scalpel.
  • Gengetsu asked Kakashi to spar with Rin for combat experience, and he reassured Minato that Tsunade had already approved teaching Rin the technique.
