War on the Brink, Destroying Heavy Weapons
"There will be no more." Puspi still wore a smile, but an arrow had already slipped from his sleeve and was plunged into Miraz's back.
Miraz cried out in pain, staggered forward a few steps, and collapsed to the ground in despair.
Puspi stared blankly at Miraz's corpse, feigning bewilderment for a few seconds before shouting, "Betrayal! They shot the king! They murdered our king!"
After shouting these words, he immediately mounted his horse and, escorted by the general, galloped towards the Telmarine army formation.
When General Sophi was defeated Miraz, he rode on horseback and rushed towards the Telmar army ahead of them.
Peter, Edmund, Caspian were also dumbfounded by what they saw. They knew Miraz was going to die, but today, his death seemed too hasty. They were almost caught off guard.
"Prepare for battle!" Peter shouted. "Go now!"
Caspian immediately mounted his horse and stood with the centaur leader, preparing to launch a counterattack according to plan.
At the very top of the fortress, Aaron cocked his rifle and aimed at the catapults in the Telmar army's formation, while on the lower level, Tumnus led a squad of archers, ready for battle.
Kings Peter and Edmund stood side by side at the forefront of the Narnian, boosting the morale of their troops.
"Take up your weapons, Telmarine!" Sophi shouted. "Take up your weapons and fight!"
The flag signalman waved a black flag, ordering the projectile vehicles to launch an attack.
"Put!"
A row of round stones shot out in unison, flying towards the bunker at a distance of several meters.
Bang! Bang! Bang...
Gunshots, like muffled thunder, rang out one after another, and the round stones exploded in mid-air.
Countless large and small stones rained down from the sky, disrupting the orderly military formation and causing quite a commotion.
But that wasn't the end of it. After the boulder shattered, gunshots rang out again.
With each gunshot, a catapult broke in half.
The Telmarine brought seven catapults, which Aaron wiped out in one fell swoop.
"What's going on?" Puspi asked in a panic.
"I guess it must be the magic of the King of Gunnarnia," the general said.
During this time, he also took the opportunity to learn about the history of Narnia. Magic does exist, otherwise Caspian could have summoned the king of Gunnarnia with just a horn.
"Are you kidding me?"
"That's the only plausible explanation. We can't exactly say that all our catapults are malfunctioning!"
"Maybe!" a general chuckled dismissively. "There are rats among the Narnian. It's not surprising that they come at night and sabotage our catapults when we're not looking."
"You're right." Puspi calmed down. "It's definitely Narnian's little trick. They're sorely mistaken if they think this will scare us."
"But how do we explain the sound?" The general was still somewhat worried.
"That's too easy, isn't it?" Puspi sneered. "General, you're worrying too much."
Don't you realize that if those four children—no, those four kings—had possessed such abilities, the battle with our king just now wouldn't have been so perilous, and we wouldn't have been able to safely return to our camp?
Upon hearing this, the general thought it made sense and nodded slightly, "Your Excellency, shall we launch an attack now, or wait for the new catapults to arrive?"
"Let the soldiers injured by the stones rest in the rear first, and launch an attack immediately after they have rested and regrouped," said Puspi shrewdly. "I will not give them time. Destroying the catapults will only prove that they are all bark and no bite."
On the other side, Peter and Edmund couldn't help but swallow hard as they watched the catapults fall, silently giving Aaron a thumbs up in their hearts.
"That's really good marksmanship," Edmund exclaimed. "And the speed of his shots is incredibly fast, with almost no pauses."
"His family sells arms, after all, so it's only natural that they have this," Peter said. "But he just emptied his Sniper Rifle of all its bullets, which means..."
"That's not something we should be thinking about right now," Edmund interrupted. "Let's focus on winning this battle according to plan first."
Peter nodded. "I hope Lucy and the others can find Aslan soon!"
A dozen minutes later, the Telmarine army had finished regrouping.
The general drew his Longsword. "Cavalry, attack!"
Thousands of fully armed cavalrymen charged toward the fortress at the same time, their stampede causing the ground to tremble slightly.
Peter turned and gave Caspian a wink, and he and the centaur leader immediately went inside the bunker.
After a day and a night of hard work by the Narnian, the bunker was filled with dry firewood and straw soaked in kerosene, and oil drums of various sizes were placed in some inconspicuous corners.
Half of Narnia's army was gathered underground. Caspian quickly rushed to the front of the troops. "Narnian, attack!"
Instead of rushing out of the bunker, they quickly moved underground in front of it.
"One two three..."
They counted from one to ten; this was the time they calculated.
At that moment, directly above them was the Telmarine cavalry launching their charge.
"It's right now!" Caspian roared.
The powerful races among the Narnian, including bulls, sheep, centaurs, and Giant, all joined the fray, smashing the stone pillars supporting the ground as they charged.
As the stone pillars broke one by one, the ground collapsed.
The Telmarine cavalry were one-third of the way in, and the remaining two-thirds also braked suddenly to avoid falling into the huge pit.
Trumpkin saw an opportunity and ordered all the archers to fire.
A volley of arrows made matters worse for the already badly wounded cavalry, and many soldiers who were still trying to climb out of the pit fell back down.
"Attack!"
Peter roared, and all the Narnian outside the bunker charged forward.
Meanwhile, Caspian led half of the Narnian through two dug tunnels to the rear of the cavalry.
The total number of Narnian was less than that of the Telmarine, but far greater than the number of Telmar cavalry.
Ambushed midway, attacking from both sides, and with a significant numerical advantage, the cavalry was caught off guard and unable to launch a counterattack for a time.
At the very top of the fortress, Aaron put away his Sniper Rifle and looked at the battlefield below with a meaningful gaze, silently mourning for the cavalrymen for a second.
Some were shot to death by arrows, some were bitten to death by tigers and leopards, some died by swords, and some were beaten to death by Giant. The most tragic were those who were killed by rats, which was definitely a major failure in their lives.
"How tragic!" Cornelius exclaimed.
"They're still alive, at least they died a quick death," Aaron said weakly. "I was just about to ask, how did you end up here?"
"Where else can I go?" Cornelius retorted confidently. "I'm old and frail. I can't fight with a sword like them. Even if you gave me a bow and arrow, I wouldn't kill anyone!"
Aaron's face darkened. "Do you really want me to put this out in the open?"
Why do you, you old codger, insist on following me?
"Safe," Cornelius said somewhat sheepishly. "I was thinking of hiding deep in the forest tonight and coming out again after the war is over."
But Caspian advised me to stay with you, saying that was the only way to ensure my safety.
"Heh!" Aaron sneered. "He'll definitely be a qualified king in the future, using others without any qualms whatsoever."
"He also asked me to apologize to you on his behalf, since he didn't discuss it with you beforehand." Cornelius's voice was weak, and Aaron might not have been able to hear it clearly if he hadn't had excellent hearing.
Smack! Smack! Smack!
"Beautiful." Aaron gritted his teeth, resentful. "It was absolutely right not to consult me beforehand. I would have refused this request without hesitation."
I've already done everything I could to help him deal with those heavy weapons, and now I'm also helping him protect an elderly, overweight man. Doesn't he feel ashamed?
"I am a professor, after all; I should at least give you some face."
"Pah! You still have the nerve to say that? The fact that you're here already proves how thick-skinned you are." Aaron retorted without any politeness, while secretly cursing in his heart that every world has one or two old bastards with bad tempers.
Cornelius's lips twitched slightly. "Caspian's actions were out of necessity."
Aaron rolled his eyes and took out a Light Sniper Rifle from the Magic Array. "I'm in a really bad mood right now. Do you think it would be okay if I secretly shot him?"
Cornelius's expression changed drastically. He had witnessed the power of this weapon firsthand; Caspian would be crippled even if he survived a single shot.
"Please don't, I'm coming right now."
"Let's forget about it!"
"No, as long as you don't lay a hand on Caspian, I will absolutely not hold you back."
"Just kidding." Aaron shook his head. "It's just protecting one more old geezer, it's not difficult for me."
"Then what is this?" Cornelius looked at the Sniper Rifle in Aaron's hand, his face showing obvious suspicion.
"The previous gun was out of bullets, but this one still has some," Aaron said calmly. "Although the Telmarine army has lost its catapults, its heavy crossbows are still intact."
"I have to destroy that thing. Otherwise, a volley of crossbow bolts will kill a lot of our men."
As soon as he finished speaking, the sound of orderly footsteps rang out.
Puspi raised his Longsword, and a large number of Telmar infantrymen pressed forward.
"Um... should we go somewhere else?" Cornelius asked worriedly. "The second phase of the plan is about to begin, which means the fortress we're standing on will soon turn into a furnace."
"No need. Leaving here would be a piece of cake for me," Aaron said casually, then used the scope to find a sniper target.
Peter and Caspian also noticed the movement of the Telmar army. They exchanged a glance and nodded in tacit agreement.
The second phase of the plan is to lure the infantry into the bunker. Doing this is neither easy nor difficult.
There should be at least some fighting before retreating; if you run away without fighting, anyone would find it strange.
With a wave of his hand, Caspian sent over a dozen Griffin carrying Monolith and archers to the Telmarine army.
Seeing this, Puspi remained calm and ordered his soldiers to deploy heavy crossbows.
Each ballista was equipped with several rows of huge arrows and required five people to push it.
The archer aimed at the Accio Griffin, "Release..."
Before the word 'arrow' could be uttered, a muffled thud came from afar, and a crossbow cart instantly disintegrated.
Click!
Aaron quickly pulled the bolt, ejecting a spent cartridge.
A vibrant green Magic Array appeared on the scope, through which Aaron could clearly see the sniper target.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
After a series of gunshots, all the ballistae were destroyed.
"How could this happen?" Puspi's face showed anger. "Those damned Narnian must have planned this all along, even dismantling the ballistae."
"My lord, you should have been prepared for this," the general said helplessly. "Besides, I think we should first think about how to deal with those Griffin."
Puspi looked up and his face immediately darkened. "Have the archers shoot them down."
"This is outrageous! I swear I will wipe out these damned Narnian!"
Aaron took a deep breath and slung the Sniper Rifle over his shoulder. "Not bad, just a little unsatisfying."
"Then why don't you fire a few more shots?" Cornelius asked tentatively. "This gun should still have plenty of bullets left, right?"
"Three bullets left." Aaron shrugged. "But killing is out of the question. Principles may change over time, but for now, we must stick to what we should stick to."
As the infantry advanced in a mighty procession, Peter and Caspian, seeing that the time was right, immediately gave the order to retreat.
All the Narnian, including Tumnus and others above the bunker, retreated back into the bunker.
"Charge! Don't let them escape! Kill them all!" Puspi roared.
The Telmar soldiers immediately stormed into the bunker, Peter and his men showed no intention of fighting. Instead, they quickly shook off the soldiers by relying on their familiarity with the bunker.
A few minutes later, a breach suddenly appeared several hundred meters behind the bunker, Peter led all the Narnian to retreat quickly.
By this time, half of the Telmar soldiers had entered the bunker, and the other half were also crawling inside.
As Puspi saw the Narnian retreating, a cold smile appeared on his face. "Trying to run away? Not so easy."
Without that fortress, they're just a rabble. Order the remaining troops to pursue them and wipe them out.
"No." The general seemed to realize something, his face turning pale instantly, and a fine layer of sweat appeared on his forehead. "Withdraw from that fortress."
"What did you say?" Puspi, his expression turning hostile.
"There's no time to explain, sir."
That's a trap. Get our men out of the bunker immediately, or our army will suffer heavy losses.
Puspi frowned slightly. He greatly admired the general's combat awareness, but abandoning the fortress he had just captured made him somewhat conflicted.
"General, perhaps you are overthinking it?"
"My lord, I'm not joking."
We must evacuate our people now, or it will be too late.
"Shut up! Shut up!" Puspi said dismissively. "Get all the soldiers out of the bunker."
