Background / History
Eighteen years before the main story, Xu Yong was one of Shenyun City's outstanding young martial artists and a prospective successor to the General Commander. During the Monster Tide, he entered a formation to defend the city's civilians and led troops against a True Bone great demon. The battle damaged his Dao foundation and left Flame Demon Power within him. 74 80 84
Despite his worsening condition, Xu Yong remained commander of Dongyong Camp for eighteen years. The camp's soldiers deeply respected him for his service and rejected Qin Song's demand that he surrender the Military Tally and command. 80 84
When Su Ye offered to comprehend a second Vast Sea Sword Intent to help treat him, Xu Yong recognized the youth's resolve and promised to grant any request if he succeeded. Though Xu Yong admitted he did not truly expect the feat to be possible, he honored Su Ye's confidence. 74
Su Ye fulfilled the promise within five days. Xu Yong used the Heavenly Blade Heart Array to borrow Su Ye and Li Hai's Vast Sea Sword Intent, suppressing much of the Flame Demon Power. Su Ye then refined Intent Pills, allowing Xu Yong to reach the threshold for breakthrough. 85 89 After surviving the heavenly lightning tribulation and entering the True Bone Realm, Xu Yong killed Qin Song and became Dongyong Camp's Deputy Battalion Commander. 89 90 94
Following his recovery, Xu Yong became one of Su Ye's principal supporters. He granted Su Ye access to rare breathing techniques, arranged practical combat training, advocated for him before Ye Tianlin, and helped secure a custom Origin Power Weapon in return for Su Ye assisting Ye Xingli. 92 97 107 118
Xu Yong later used two Three Yuan Heaven Connecting Spirit Pills to treat Su Ye after the Azure Turtle battle, remained at Dongyong Camp to supervise his recovery, and taught him the Dragon Phoenix Bone Forging Method despite the risks. 185 186
After learning of Su Ye's true Su Family heritage, Xu Yong was angered by the family's treatment of him. As Su Ye's achievements continued to grow, Xu Yong gradually realized that the youth he once mentored had become someone he could rely upon in turn. 204 578
Appearance
Before his recovery, Xu Yong appeared severely worn down by his old injuries: more than half of his hair was white, his body was hunched, and his eyes were dim. 80 After breaking through to the True Bone Realm, he regained a sharp, vigorous bearing and wore a green military uniform. 104
- Scarred, rough hands. 81
- Formerly coughed black blood due to Flame Demon Power. 81 86
- Wields a black-and-red Origin Power saber. 86 87
- His posture straightened after his breakthrough, restoring the presence of his younger self. 89
Personality
Xu Yong is direct, resolute, and guided by a soldier's sense of duty. Even while his injuries worsened, he placed his subordinates and Shenyun City's safety before his own life, preparing to sacrifice himself rather than allow Qin Song to seize control of Dongyong Camp. 86
He values martial courage and detests empty posturing. Su Ye's refusal to yield to Qin Song reminded Xu Yong of the conviction he had nearly lost during his eighteen years of decline. He later summarized his view plainly: martial cultivation requires blood, courage, and the willingness to contend. 89 105 228
Although once described as reckless in his youth, Xu Yong is perceptive in judging people. He recognized Su Ye's composure, talent, and potential early, protected the secrecy of Su Ye's Nine Extremes Yin-Yang Breathing Technique, and consistently provided support without demanding dependence in return. 74 97 120
