Background / History
During the Mars Sphere's more than thirty years of isolation, the Dion Empire developed alongside the Reink Nation and Longsog Kingdom. Population growth and the emergence of mentally gifted “Saint Humans”—later internationally designated as Newtypes—intensified conflict within the Sphere. The Empire used Coordinators' intelligence to accelerate civilian and military development. 333
The Empire launched a war against the Reink Nation and Longsog Kingdom, rapidly defeating their combined forces. Both states were destroyed, while surviving soldiers and civilians formed underground resistance organizations dedicated to restoring them. 333
After contact with the wider international community, the Dion Empire agreed to let the resistance organizations resettle in newly re-established Reink and Longsog states in the Earth Sphere. The organizations disbanded after their members and displaced civilians were publicly transported out of Mars. The Empire then established relations with the Hanxia Empire and entered the international sphere in August of the first Universal Calendar year. 348
Its admission made the imperial system the strongest institutional bloc in the international sphere, despite private resistance from democratic powers such as the Wanluo Federation and Anglo-Saxon Democratic Republic. 348
Government and Social Order
The Dion Empire organized society through identity cards and a rigid hereditary-style class hierarchy. Conquered populations were screened for Newtype potential and compelled to accept Dion citizenship or slavery. 399
| Class | Composition and privileges |
|---|---|
| Special Citizens | Newtypes and a small number of Coordinators; granted full privileges. |
| Upper Citizens | Coordinators and ordinary humans who rendered major service. |
| Middle Citizens | Ordinary-human elites or citizens with meritorious achievements. |
| Lower Citizens | General civilian class; the standard identification held by ordinary humans. |
| General Slaves | Minor repeat offenders, debtors sentenced by courts, and conquered civilians who refused submission; some could regain their prior status after serving a term. |
| Lowly Slaves | The lowest slave classification. |
Class structure and classifications are documented in 399.
Newtypes among conquered civilians received Special Citizen identification. Newtype soldiers who surrendered were given one hour to pledge loyalty; refusal or failure to answer resulted in execution. Ordinary humans who pledged allegiance became Lower Citizens, while those who refused were enslaved. 399
The Empire auctioned enslaved civilians from occupied territories. Even Lower Citizens could purchase up to two slaves, while Middle Citizens could purchase four; surrendered families were sometimes forced to buy back enslaved relatives. 399 400
Military Forces and Doctrine
Mobile Weapons
- Saint Machines — Newtype-oriented mobile suits developed from high-level Noah Civilization designs. The Empire fielded customized machines as well as mass-produced Azure and Crimson variants. 399 891
- Scorpion Tiger and Winged Bird — Autonomous or remotely operable mobile suits used extensively as mass-production forces; their systems could be controlled through Newtype psychic capabilities. 403 417
- Fenrir Mobile Armor — A transforming wolf-like Mobile Armor with beast and humanoid forms. Its 30-meter Super Impulse Cannon fired spiraling dart projectiles capable of piercing layered shields, while its claws could tear through anti-transfer armor. 399
- Warheads — Large numbers of expendable automated weapons used to overwhelm enemies and compensate for personnel shortages. 447 449
- Black Hannya and Evil Oni — Mobile suits deployed to counter opposing Saint Machine forces. 403
Fleet Assets
| Asset | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| Sky Rocket battleship | Massive warship used for long-range bombardment with revived naval-gun tactics. 400 403 |
| Destroyer battleship | A 3-kilometer warship carrying 500 MS, more than 1,000 missile ports, numerous laser turrets, and a 100-meter-diameter main cannon capable of obliterating a fortified meteorite base in one shot. 452 |
| Crimson Palace | The Empire's ultimate fortress weapon; its main guns and Golden Dawn superweapon destroyed large numbers of mobile suits and warships during the final campaign. 872 |
Dion warships were highly automated. A 700-meter Dion vessel reportedly required no more than 1,000 logistical personnel, compared with an estimated 5,000 personnel for similarly sized foreign ships. 542
Occupation Warfare
The Empire converted occupied Colony Satellites' residential districts into armories, producing Scorpion Tigers, Winged Birds, and warships from imported and recycled materials. Retreating forces destroyed these facilities before rebuilding them in recaptured territories. 417 440
It also coerced surrendered enemy soldiers into frontline service by holding their families hostage. Those deemed insufficiently obedient risked receiving news of their relatives' execution. 400
Newtype Ideology
The Dion Empire promoted Newtype supremacy and treated ordinary humans as inherently inferior. Its manifesto declared war on Colony Sphere powers, claiming it would “evolve” ordinary-human leaders who had polluted the universe. It exempted Earth Sphere nations at the time, arguing that Earth was humanity's origin and its ordinary humans were more capable of coexisting with Newtypes. 398
The ideology shaped both military recruitment and civilian policy. Captured populations could escape enslavement through Newtype potential, while marriages between Newtypes and ordinary humans violated Dion law and could bring punishment upon relatives. 376 577
This discrimination alienated even Dion citizens. Prisoners who married across the Empire's Newtype–ordinary-human divide renounced Dion citizenship and joined the Skywing Mercenary Group. 577
Advanced Technology
Noah Civilization Technology
The Empire's technological leap originated from a 400-meter extraterrestrial spacecraft discovered about 80 kilometers west of its capital district. Its exterior resembled an ancient sailing ship, but its armor and database contained technology from an ancient extraterrestrial civilization the Empire called the Noah Civilization. 891
- The vessel was estimated to be at least 500 years old and carried twelve 25-meter mass-produced MS. 891
- Its database contained designs and data for warships, Mobile Armors, MS, nuclear systems, and communications technology. 891
- Dion warships were developed from Noah database blueprints, initially through reverse development. 891
- The Saint Machines were based on high-level Noah MS designs; some were directly developed from blueprints, while machines such as the Scorpion Tiger were reverse-engineered derivatives. 891
- By Fadis's rise to power, the Empire had reportedly mastered more than 70% of the Noah technology it had acquired. 891
Efficiency Boost
Dion mobile weapons possessed an Efficiency Boost function also seen in Anglo-Saxon Democratic Republic systems. The discovery prompted international investigations into possible links between military contractors; later information connected the technology's spread to Fahdina Samulas, who brought it to the Dongyang Empire after fleeing Mars. 401 891
International Relations
- Reink Nation and Longsog Kingdom — Conquered and destroyed by the Empire; their resistance movements later disbanded after resettlement to re-established Earth Sphere territories. 333 348
- International sphere — Admitted the Empire as a member despite democratic states' fear of its military power and institutional influence. 348
- Cataro — Dion forces invaded Cataro territory to rescue citizens held by pirates, disregarding Cataro's sovereignty; Cataro later apologized and offered compensation rather than fight. 373
- Anglo-Saxon Democratic Republic — Principal target of the Empire's Colony Sphere offensives. Dion forces occupied numerous Colony Satellites and forcibly converted many captured civilians into Dion subjects or slaves. 399 577
- United Army — Coalition opponent formed in response to the Empire's Newtype supremacism and expansion. 402
- Skywing Mercenary Group — Initially maintained mutual restraint with the Empire, but later became a decisive enemy. The Group's eventual Mars campaign ended the Empire. 375 883
- Oya Cross Nation — Restored diplomatic relations with the Empire during Yelishao De's regency, though the Empire did not accept all proposed civilian-protection agreements. 752 753
- Dion Believers Organization — Fanatical pro-Dion movement targeting opponents of the Empire and Newtype ideology. The Empire publicly denied directing or supporting it. 420 424
Decline and Fall
Extended war strained the Empire's economy and manpower. Its forces faced troop shortages, while the population became severely imbalanced; at one point, child soldiers accounted for 30% of the military before Yelishao De rescinded the practice. 500 748
Internal political divisions deepened between Yelishao De, Prince Alexandre, and great-noble factions. The Annihilation Army was nominally state-controlled but substantially influenced by noble families, who favored Alexandre as a more controllable successor. 732
On July 5, Cosmic Year 126, the Skywing Mercenary Group's Mieweng Unit began the campaign later called the “Opening Salvo of the Dion Empire's Demise.” Neutron Jammers and Minov Particles disrupted Dion communications and radar while ground and orbital forces seized bases and facilities. 821
By July 30, the Empire retained only 40% of its former unified Mars Sphere territory. Conscripts surrendered, fought their own commanders, or were released by Yelishao De when their families lived in Mieweng-controlled areas. 826
The Dion Army shifted to defensive warfare and guerrilla tactics as defections, intelligence leaks, assassinations, and factional paranoia intensified. Yelishao De refused to conscript children under twelve and ordered severe punishment for officers who did so. 834 842
The final battle began on October 7, Cosmic Year 126. Although the Crimson Palace inflicted major losses, the Mieweng Unit ultimately broke the Empire's remaining defenses. 870 872
Fadis surrendered after his Crimson Emperor Kai was disabled. Long Fei took the Dion Imperial Palace, declared the Empire fallen, and established the Skywing Empire over the Mars Sphere. 883
Legacy
Most Dion weapons were later dismantled or destroyed by the Skywing Empire, with only selected examples retained for research or display. 898
The Skywing Empire later shared adapted Dion technology with the Hanxia Empire, Oya Cross Nation, Russo-Soviet Republic, and Gas Empire to prepare them for a possible Las Kingdom invasion. It withheld Noah technology, judging the Dion-derived systems easier for other powers to absorb. 946
Surviving loyalists formed the Dion Pirate Group, using Dion-era warships and Saint Machines to raid merchant vessels and small Colony Sphere states. 930
The pirate group's leadership used Dion's Loyalty, a hallucinogenic memory-implantation agent that gave abductees false Dion identities, loyalty to Fadis, hatred of Long Fei, and violent tendencies. 991
