Illyrio rose from an earlier life as a wandering assassin. Alongside Varys, then a thief, he became wealthy and influential in Pentos; their association later developed into a plan to establish a new dynasty through Illyrio’s Valyrian son, Aegon 107 189.

As Trade Governor, Illyrio built an extensive commercial empire. His guild monopolized Pentos’s spice trade and held significant interests in gems, dragonbone, cheese, and amber wine. He maintained neutrality in the city’s struggle between Braavosi and Volantene interests, prioritizing profitable trade and avoiding commitments that could endanger his position 104 115.

Entry into Pentos

Ian initially cannot approach Illyrio because the governor has barred supposed Westerosi nobles after repeated impersonation attempts. An invitation through Tarro Bayne’s connections allows Ian and Daron to attend Illyrio’s banquet instead 100 103 104.

Illyrio receives the pair with outward hospitality but initially considers them insignificant displaced Westerosi knights. He offers horses as compensation for his guards’ conduct and allows them to stay at his mansion, while quietly assessing their value 105 106.

Testing and Recruiting Ian

Illyrio probes Ian’s motives, forces, honor, and connection to Tarro Bayne. After Ian refuses both compensation and the opportunity to expose Tarro directly, Illyrio concludes that he possesses the reliability and ambition needed for the Targaryen cause 106 107.

He later assigns Ian the task of uncovering a supposed traitor in the merchant guild. Although the alleged slave ship proves nonexistent, Ian’s careful investigation and conclusions further establish his standing within Illyrio’s household 114 119.

Aegon’s Revelation

As Ian becomes more deeply integrated into his plans, Illyrio discusses Pentosi and Braavosi politics with him as a mentor. He eventually discloses that Aegon Targaryen survived and implies that Aegon, rather than Viserys, should inherit the Targaryen restoration effort 140 141 142.

Pentos Grand Council Plot

When Ian warns him of Hazan and Tytellus’s planned coup, Illyrio initially doubts the danger but ultimately accepts Ian’s counterplan. He attends the Grand Council and leverages the widespread belief that he is allied with Hazan 161 162 170.

Illyrio turns the council gathering into a trap: Prince Tyg is poisoned, Tytellus is blamed and arrested, and the rival factions are driven into conflict. The scheme is intended to eliminate Illyrio’s political opponents while leaving the Iron Bank unable to openly blame him for Hazan’s death 171 173.

Fall of Pentos and Death

While Illyrio’s maneuver destroys Tytellus and Hazan’s alliance, Ian removes Daenerys from Pentos and arranges the looting of Illyrio’s treasury. Hazan’s forces later enter the mansion without resistance and find its wealth already gone 172 176 177.

The Dothraki enter Pentos as the city falls. A later report received by Varys confirms Illyrio’s death during the sack 177 189.
