Background / History
Daenerys and her brother Viserys escaped Dragonstone during Robert's Rebellion after Ser William Dare and four guards rescued them from the attack. They spent years in exile, moving through Braavos, Myr, Tyrosh, Qohor, Volantis, Lys, and finally Pentos. 133
In Pentos, Viserys and Illyrio Mopatis prepared to marry Daenerys to Khal Drogo in exchange for a Dothraki army. At Drogo's banquet, Daenerys was dressed as a princess but internally regarded as merchandise for Viserys's restoration effort; she pleaded not to be sent away and feared both Drogo and her brother. 129
Ian Dary repeatedly intervened when Viserys threatened her, earning Daenerys's trust through his claimed connection to Ser William Dare and his ability to defuse Viserys's anger. On the eve of the wedding, Daenerys resisted Viserys's attempted assault, injuring him before Ian removed him from her chambers. 133 136 171
After Viserys's death, Ian took Daenerys out of Pentos rather than allowing the marriage to Drogo. Though overwhelmed by grief and responsibility, she accepted that she was the last Targaryen and allowed Ian to proclaim her Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. 175 176
A Dragon Dream and her subsequent contact with Illyrio's dragon eggs strengthened Daenerys's connection to her lineage. She survived Viserys's funeral pyre unharmed and hatched the black dragon Eon, restoring dragons to the world. 180 181 184
Appearance
Daenerys is petite, with fair skin, silver-gold hair, and violet eyes. Her early Pentoshi presentation emphasizes both her Targaryen heritage and her lack of control over it. 129 136
- Wore a deep-purple silk robe, jeweled crown, amethyst-set gold bracelets, and a heavy Valyrian-inscribed necklace at Khal Drogo's banquet. 129
- Wore a velvet gown trimmed in gold and silver thread while awaiting her wedding in Illyrio's mansion. 148
- Appeared before Ghiscari envoys in a purple brocade robe, silver belt, and a three-headed dragon crown of gold, ivory, and agate. 239
- Her hair burned away during Eon's hatching, while she herself remained physically unharmed. 184
Personality
Daenerys begins as frightened, isolated, and conditioned to expect Viserys's violence. She is initially unable to imagine refusing the marriage arranged for her, yet she resists Viserys when he attacks her and later warns Ian of her brother's cruelty despite fearing retaliation. 129 148 171
Following Viserys's death, she develops a stronger sense of duty and identity as the last Targaryen. She consciously presents herself with queenly confidence before retainers, envoys, and religious figures, even when she is privately uncertain. 176 180 239 283
Daenerys remains deeply troubled by slavery and the treatment of the Unsullied. Her compassion conflicts with Ian's military and economic policies, and she often accepts his explanations despite misgivings; she later recalls his promise to abolish slavery once their power is sufficient. 205 208 230 357
Abilities & Skills
Dragonblood and Fire Immunity
Daenerys possesses an exceptional resistance to heat and open flame, which becomes central to the return of dragons. 182 184
- Can touch and hold a torch flame without burns or pain. 182
- Sat within Viserys's burning funeral pyre and emerged unharmed. 184
- Her documented immunity concerns heat and fire; no broader invulnerability is established. 182 184
Dragon Dreams and Visions
Daenerys receives vivid dreams and visions associated with dragons, her past trauma, and prophecy. 180 181 222
- Dreamed of Viserys, Rhaegar, a red door, and a great dragon before resolving to define her own path as the last Dragonblood. 180
- Experienced a vision of a dragon while holding one of the fossilized eggs. 181
- Received Quaithe's cryptic dream-prophecy: “To go north, you must go south. To reach the Westerlands, you must go east. To move forward, you must fall back. To find the light, you must pass through the shadow.” 222
Dragon Hatching
Daenerys is capable of awakening fossilized dragon eggs through fire rituals. 184 304
- Hatched the black dragon Eon during Viserys's funeral pyre. 184
- Later entered another cremation pyre and hatched three additional dragons. 304
- Initially described Eon as a dragon she had “resurrected,” rather than regarding it as her child. 184
High Valyrian and Dragon-Taming Knowledge
Daenerys is proficient in High Valyrian and retains traditional Targaryen instruction concerning dragon commands. 181 187
- Offered to teach Ian High Valyrian herself. 181
- Began giving Ian daily lessons in Valyrian and basic dragon-taming commands. 187
Political Judgment
Daenerys increasingly acts as a sovereign rather than solely as Ian's protected claimant. 239 283
- Refused Ghiscari envoys' request to commit her forces to a war she believed did not serve her restoration goal. 239 240
- Distinguished between a knight acting on honor and a ruler weighing wider consequences. 239
- Maintained formal composure when receiving Machiro, the Red Temple's envoy from Volantis. 283

Story Role / Major Arcs
Pentos and the Broken Wedding
Daenerys is brought to Khal Drogo's banquet as Viserys's prospective bride, fearing both the Dothraki khal and her brother. Ian's interventions give her a trusted protector, while her successful resistance to Viserys's final assault marks her first direct break from his control. 129 136 137 171
Escape and Queenship
Following Viserys's death, Daenerys leaves Pentos aboard the Breeze Goddess's Kiss. Ian frames her Targaryen blood not as a right to power, but as a responsibility to lead, prompting her acceptance of queenship. 175 176 178
Return of Dragons
Daenerys's dreams, fire immunity, and connection to the eggs culminate in Eon's birth from Viserys's pyre. The event publicly signals the return of dragons and makes her a target of players and political powers. 180 181 184 186
Astapor and Slaver's Bay
In Astapor, Daenerys confronts the brutality behind the Unsullied trade. She accepts Ian's plan to acquire the army but remains morally opposed to the Good Masters' methods and later questions the new slave system established under their rule. 205 208 210 230
