After hunting a deer and a wild boar in the forest, everyone carried them back to Sam's cabin. They worked together to prepare and roast the game while Emily and Riel, the two women, arranged the tables and chairs.
Jacob and Paul drove to Forks Town to buy alcohol. Jiang Hao gave them a full 1,000 US Dollars, a huge sum. Beer cost only a few dollars a case, while liquor was just several to a dozen dollars a bottle. They filled the entire bed of Jacob's pickup truck.
By the time Jacob and the others returned, the boar and venison were perfectly roasted. Seeing so much alcohol, everyone burst into cheers. The feast officially began, glasses clinked and drinks flowed—though the wanderers did not seem so refined. Most of them simply cracked open a can and drained it in one gulp.
Sam's little cabin was filled with laughter and horseplay. They were now one family—the Quileute werewolf family. Halfway through the drinking, Jiang Hao raised his glass and said, "I have something to announce."
The others immediately lowered their voices when they heard their leader had something to say. Jiang Hao smiled, then looked at Sam and said, "Sam was the first of our generation to awaken. Those who awakened afterward all received Sam's care and guidance. Sam has made great contributions to the Quileute wolf pack, so I propose that Sam become the Quileute wolf pack second-in-command."
Everyone was stunned for a moment before bursting into cheers. "Good! We support it!"
Among the current pack, Sam actually held great prestige. He had been the first to awaken, and pioneers were often the ones who suffered the most and worked the hardest. Those who awakened later—Paul, Embry, Jared, Gil, Brady, Colin, and the others—had all grown under Sam's instruction.
