Chapter 27: If You Meet a Woman Like This, Treasure Her!
Jiang Hao greeted Luohan, left the distillery, and crossed the smooth flagstone street to his home on Front Street. The three-courtyard house with green bricks and tiles wasn't lavish but was perfectly livable.
Er Dan's Mother had become a full-time maid, handling the washing and cooking. Jiu'er was diligent too, keeping the place tidy and spotless.
When Jiu'er saw Jiang Hao return, she hurried over to take his hat and help him out of his long gown. "Everything all right at the distillery?"
"Fine, it's good," Jiang Hao said.
"I've made dinner. Since you're back, let's eat," Jiu'er said.
They sat down in the dining room. Four dishes and a soup—not extravagant, but warm. Jiang Hao said, "Let's have some wine."
"You want a drink? What kind? I'll get it." Jiu'er stood up.
"Let's have Maotai."
Jiu'er brought a small jar of authentic Maotai. Since arriving here, Jiang Hao had bought many types of wine, just to taste what this era's liquor was like.
Jiu'er poured a bowl for Jiang Hao. He took the jar and poured one for her too. Jiu'er was surprised. "I'm drinking too?"
"Have some with me," Jiang Hao said.
"All right, I'll keep the head of the house company." Jiu'er obediently agreed.
They clinked bowls and took a big gulp. Jiu'er chuckled. "This Maotai is really good. If only we could brew wine this fine someday."
Jiang Hao looked at her. "Are you getting used to living here?"
Jiu'er picked up food for him with her chopsticks. "What's there not to get used to? It's wonderful. I never dared to dream of a life like this before."
Good, as long as she was comfortable.
They chatted about everyday things as they drank. Each had two bowls. Jiang Hao felt a bit dizzy, but Jiu'er seemed fine.
The woman helped him to the inner room and sat him down in a square armchair. Soon she brought a wooden basin, took off his shoes, and placed his feet in the hot water. As she rubbed them, she said, "You've been running around all day. Soaking your feet will help you sleep well."
So comfortable!
Jiang Hao looked at Jiu'er through a hazy blur, and a deep reluctance stirred in his heart.
Maybe in this life, he'd never enjoy such care again.
A man roams the outside world—bitter, tired, busy, struggling. He comes home, and a woman is there waiting, with a hot meal ready, a basin of warm water for his feet, her warm body close to his. That's enough. That's satisfaction.
That man will have boundless passion to venture out again, unafraid of any storm.
Too bad, in modern society, women like this are rare—almost extinct.
If any man meets a woman like this, he should treasure her!
Jiang Hao opened his eyes. The surroundings felt unfamiliar. He looked more closely and remembered—this was his home.
The mandatory 12-hour return had brought him back.
He stared at the ceiling, dazed.
No goodbye.
Getting drunk last night was intentional. He didn't want to face the scene of parting.
He stood up, walked to the balcony, and looked at the scattered high-rises outside. It felt like a lifetime ago.
He lit a cigarette, staring blankly at the distant Han River.
He watched the sun slant westward, watched the sky fill with crimson clouds, watched darkness fall and streetlights flicker on, watched neon lights blaze on distant buildings.
Jiang Hao took a deep breath.
"Open the system panel."
Swish~
A light screen appeared before him.
In the reward area, only one reward was marked: "One Vacheron Constantin watch."
He had already sold the watch, but the reward still hung there. He'd once wondered—if he ever failed a mission and the system deducted a reward, taking the watch, would that Vacheron Constantin vanish directly from the wrist of whoever bought it?
Heh. Who knows.
He looked at the mission area. There were a few messages.
"Client feedback: Very satisfied with this consumption experience. The 'sorghum liquor' had a unique flavor, and the guest greatly enjoyed the experience."
"Congratulations, Collector, on completing this mission. System rewards issued. Please claim your reward."
Claiming the reward was the most thrilling moment.
Jiang Hao tapped the "Claim Reward" button on the system panel.
Swish~
A new reward prompt appeared on the panel.
"Congratulations, Collector. You have obtained the skill reward 'Thousand Cups Not Drunk'."
How much can you drink without getting drunk?
Jiang Hao twitched the corner of his mouth, genuinely wanting to complain.
This was basically a skill for a good-for-nothing drunkard—what use was it to him? What use, really? Was he supposed to become a paid drinker?
He wasn't too satisfied with this reward, but the system was what it was, and he had no power to argue. Was he supposed to traverse the starry cosmos to another dimension and file a complaint?
Jiang Hao suddenly felt that this system lacked interactivity—probably intentional on the aliens' part. Yeah, definitely.
No customer service, not even a place to lodge a complaint.
As the city lights came on, Jiang Hao felt an emptiness in his heart. He decided to go out for a stroll. He'd just gotten a new skill, and though he wasn't thrilled, he still wanted to test out this "Thousand Cups Not Drunk" ability. Could it really let him drink a thousand cups without getting drunk?
Nighttime in Binhai City was even livelier. Jiang Hao walked into a bar—he rarely came to places like this because he had no money. He'd only been once before with a friend, and that friend had treated.
Feidi Bar was a quiet bar with a large counter. The high stools were comfortable enough, so quite a few people sat there drinking and chatting. Jiang Hao found a spot and sat down.
The bartender was a man in his thirties with a short beard, exuding a kind of middle-aged charm. "What'll it be?"
"What do you have?"
Before getting the system—or rather, before crossing into the Red Sorghum world—Jiang Hao had only drunk a handful of times, mostly at street-side barbecue stalls with his dormmates. He didn't know much, so he didn't pretend. He just asked.
The bartender immediately pegged Jiang Hao as a bar newbie. He placed a drink menu on the counter. "Beer, brandy, vodka, whiskey, wine, or cocktails. Prices are listed."
Jiang Hao glanced over it. Beer was a few hundred per pitcher. Cocktails like Candy Night, *****, Angel's Kiss, Pink Lady—thirty to fifty per glass. Bordeaux dry red was 398, Changyu Cabernet 298, Jack Daniel's 368, Chivas 398, Hennessy 880.
He had no idea if that was expensive or cheap for a bar.
Since he was here to drink, he figured he'd try a little of everything and see what this "Thousand Cups Not Drunk" skill was all about.
