"Beep~ beep~ beep~!"
A short, low alarm sounded through the prison. Then the iron doors of the cells sprang open one after another. The inmates rushed out the moment they saw the doors open. Being locked in a cage felt awful, especially in solitary confinement, where every second was torture.
Everyone held in this prison was a serious offender, with sentences of at least twenty years. Security was correspondingly stricter than in ordinary prisons. There were no large rooms holding several or dozens of people here, only double cells. Those with the gravest crimes were assigned single cells, like Jiang Hao.
The inmates had four chances a day to leave their cells, the times they looked forward to most. They could go to the cafeteria for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. From two to four in the afternoon was the happiest time of the day, when they could go outside and bask in the sun.
If the weather was bad, they might get soaked by rain, but the people here would rather stand in the rain, stomp through puddles, and practice Peppa Pig jumps than stay in their tiny cells.
It was dinner time now.
The inmates lined up and headed outside, but Jiang Hao noticed that his cell door had not opened. He stood and watched the crowd slowly leave through the glass wall.
