Background
Deng Baiyi was the daughter of Deng Chicheng, a wealthy resident of remote Jade Pearl Town in Northern Prefecture. Her mother died early, and she grew up resenting the confined life of a prosperous town daughter; she wanted to wield a flying sword, slay demons, and roam freely as a Sword Immortal. 22
During the chaos surrounding Xie Xuanyi’s coffin, Baiyi revealed that she had purchased it and led him from the Deng Estate into the wilderness to investigate its origin. Faced with the demons threatening Jade Pearl Town, she was prepared to offer her own life if Xie Xuanyi would eradicate them and spare innocents. 2 3
After Xie Xuanyi destroyed the local demon threat, Baiyi rejected her father’s plan to flee. She chose instead to pursue cultivation and asked Xie Xuanyi to help recover her lost flying sword. He relocated the Deng family to Qing Province, taught her the foundations of Qi Refining, and promised to find her a suitable master rather than accept her as his own disciple. 9 10 11
Her aptitude quickly proved stronger in talismans and formation patterns than in direct sword cultivation. At Sunken Chime Mountain, Xie Xuanyi transferred formation knowledge into her sea of consciousness and taught her the forbidden Ninefold Bright Phoenix Fire Refinement Grand Formation. Baiyi completed its inscription after three days of instruction and later activated it to trap Rank Six and an army of corpse puppets. 38 39 43
During the Carp Tide City crisis, she modified a grand array to resist the great tide and defend the Evergreen Array. Her use of Daoist talismans drew the attention of the Daoist Sect’s formation masters, ultimately leading Tang Fengshu to take her away from Carp Tide City and accept her as a disciple. 84 108 260
At the Jade Purity Sanctuary, Baiyi continued practicing both formations and flying-sword control. She was guided by Junshan, a Reincarnated Adept who recognized her determination and corrected blocked acupoints that hindered her sword manipulation. Though tempted by his offer of instruction, she refused to reveal the sword insights Xie Zhen had imparted to her. 294 295
After Tang Fengshu’s confinement, Baiyi’s position within the Daoist Sect became precarious. She continued aiding Xie Xuanyi and his allies, protected Mi Yun during the crisis in Yuan Province, and later accompanied Xie Xuanyi during his recuperation in Peach Blossom Spring. 310 389 376 379
Baiyi eventually entered the sealed Heaven’s Origin Mountain using a Great Convergence Talisman and her flying sword. There, she learned of Grand Master Chongkan’s divided divine soul and was entrusted with the Tian Yuan Grand Formation. This made her the acting authority within the secret realm, able to mobilize its immense stored Yuan Qi despite her comparatively modest personal cultivation. 601 604 658
Appearance
Deng Baiyi is a slender young woman with phoenix eyes and a refined bearing. Her appearance became noticeably thinner and more haggard after prolonged cultivation and the turmoil surrounding Tang Fengshu. 2 15 307
- Wore makeup to conceal her haggard complexion when first meeting Xie Xuanyi. 2
- Has been seen in a thin blue robe while traveling with Tang Fengshu. 108
- Practiced sword control in white Daoist robes at Carp Lake. 294
- Deliberately dresses plainly and modestly, though others still perceive her as having an otherworldly presence. 377
Personality
Baiyi is courageous and resolute. Even before becoming a cultivator, she faced the demons of Jade Pearl Town with the intent to protect others, and she consistently chose the uncertain path of cultivation over safety and comfort. 2 9 22
She is diligent, patient, and unusually suited to the repetitive concentration required by talismans and formations. She can meditate for hours without distraction and genuinely enjoys the painstaking work of drawing talismans. 38
Though ambitious about flying on a sword, Baiyi remains clear-eyed about her limits. She recognizes that her Sword Dao aptitude is ordinary compared with her talent for talismans, yet refuses to abandon sword practice or her goal of eventually flying. 294 295
Baiyi is also loyal and principled. She refused Junshan’s request to view Xie Zhen’s sword insights because she had promised not to disclose them, and she persistently sought help for Tang Fengshu despite the political danger. 295 335
Abilities & Skills
Talisman Arts
Baiyi learned foundational Daoist talismans from Xie Xuanyi, including the Silence Talisman and Detonation Talisman, the latter also known as the One Qi Talisman. The Silence Talisman can be used as a Purification Talisman. 18 19
- Can preserve sensed Primordial Qi on talisman paper. 12
- Used Purification Talismans to suppress overflowing Qi during Xie Xuanyi’s breakthrough. 47
- Her sustained talisman practice strengthened her divine soul beyond cultivators of the same realm. 294
Formation Mastery
Formation patterns are Baiyi’s greatest aptitude. She rapidly comprehends complex inscriptions and can adapt existing arrays under pressure. 38 39
- Inscribed the simplified Ninefold Bright Phoenix Fire Refinement Grand Formation with only two minor errors on her first attempt. 38
- Activated the formation to trap Rank Six and her corpse-puppet army. 43
- Modified a grand array to defend the Evergreen Array from the great tide. 84
- Memorized the Dragon Shackling Formation diagram for use during the Qixia Mountain escape. 359
Flying Sword Control
Baiyi practices sword control through a combination of sword insights, talisman discipline, and persistent cultivation. Her control is improving, but she has not yet achieved sustained sword flight. 294 295
- Sent her flying sword dozens of feet and held it aloft for ninety-one breaths during practice at Carp Lake. 294
- Junshan identified blocked Shaoshang and Quchi acupoints as a major limitation and instructed her how to open them with Primordial Qi. 295
- Uses talismans to assist sword control when necessary; Xie Xuanyi considers this a valid path rather than an inferior shortcut. 309
Tian Yuan Grand Formation Authority
Within Heaven’s Origin Mountain, Baiyi can act through the Tian Yuan Grand Formation entrusted to her by Chongkan and Master Xiaoyao’s remaining divine will. 658
- Can mobilize Heaven’s Origin Mountain’s accumulated Yuan Qi through the array’s nodes. 658
- Manifested a purple-robed avatar and generated enough pressure to knock Xie Xuanyi’s flying sword away. 658
- This authority is bound to the secret realm; her power is greatly reduced outside it. 658
