Vermillion Bird Star.
Zhao Kingdom, Heng Yue Sect.
Atop sheer, towering cliffs stood an ancient sect built against the mountain, grand and magnificent.
Its towering gatehouse was constructed from Mystic Stone that radiated a faint glow, covered in mysterious, archaic runes.
On either side of the gatehouse stood pillars that soared into the clouds, their surfaces coiled with lifelike cloud-dragon carvings. Their eyes glared in fury, as though they would break free at any moment and soar through the nine heavens.
The layered flying eaves and upturned corners resembled spirit birds spreading their wings to take flight, adding an ethereal, otherworldly air amid the swirling mist.
As one of the few cultivation sects in the Zhao Kingdom, the Heng Yue Sect was currently holding an exchange competition with the Xuan Dao Sect, while also testing the other sect's true strength.
"Our Luo He Sect has no such competitions. But cultivators here focus mostly on slaughter and battle, unlike us fire cultivators, who specialize in alchemy, artifact forging, demon subjugation, and other pursuits."
The first to speak was a stunningly beautiful woman.
Her willow brows were like smoke, her beauty radiant as spring blossoms. She was like a lotus fairy, graceful and elegant, with every word and gesture carrying a gentle air.
"Wan'er, once this competition is over, we should return to the Luo He Sect. If the ancestor learns of this, he will likely blame us again for sneaking out and neglecting our cultivation."
The man beside Li Muwan sighed.
"I know..."
Li Muwan looked once more toward the distant plaza of the Heng Yue Sect. Her pearly teeth lightly bit her lower lip, and a trace of longing surfaced in her star-like eyes.
As Li Muwan's elder brother, Li Qiqing had depended on his younger sister since childhood. He also knew that for all these years, she had always carried someone in her heart.
It was said that this person was a talented disciple of the Heng Yue Sect in the Zhao Kingdom. Yet after asking around, no one had ever heard that person's name.
Just as Li Qiqing was about to say something else, the sky, once blue as the sea, suddenly filled with dark clouds. Lightning flashed and thunder roared, while bronze-colored heavenly lightning slithered wildly through the mist like dragons and serpents. Wherever it passed, the air itself twisted.
The disciples of the Heng Yue Sect and the Xuan Dao Sect stared in terror at the figure shrouded in red mist overhead. Even a single glance from him made them feel as though their souls were being forcibly torn from their bodies.
Within the silent clouds, a hundred-meter-long blood-red flood dragon darted freely through the mist. Upon closer inspection, one would see a young man in a blood-red robe standing atop its head.
The young man had fair skin, and his stern face was filled with killing intent. As the breeze swept past him, his long silver-white hair fluttered in the wind.
"Heng Yue Sect, I have finally returned."
The white-haired youth was named Lin Che. He had been the Heng Yue Sect's most talented disciple a hundred years ago, the personal disciple of the current sect master, Huang Long Zhenren, and was praised as the disciple with the greatest talent on Vermillion Bird Star.
As a transmigrator, Lin Che possessed extraordinary talent and exceptional aptitude. He reached Qi Condensation at three, Foundation Establishment at five, and the Grand Perfection of the Foundation Establishment stage at eight.
At thirteen, he became the first cultivator on Vermillion Bird Star to break through to the False Core stage. His name shook the entire Zhao Kingdom, and even Lin Yi, the Tongtian Tower's inspection envoy, thought highly of him.
However, good times did not last. As the Heng Yue Sect's talented disciple, Lin Che was exceptionally granted the qualification to enter the Extraterrestrial Battlefield, which opened once every hundred years, for its cleansing.
Yet just as Lin Che entered the Extraterrestrial Battlefield, he encountered a spatial rift that sucked him inside. His fate remained unknown.
After learning of this, Huang Long Zhenren entered the Extraterrestrial Battlefield at any cost to search for him, but ultimately returned empty-handed.
Lin Yi, the Zhao Kingdom's envoy, joined forces with an expert of the Giant Demon Race and ventured into the Extraterrestrial Battlefield once more to search for him, but they found no trace of him. In the end, they unanimously concluded that Lin Che had fallen on the battlefield.
Even Huang Long Zhenren lost his final hope.
What they did not know was that Lin Che had not died. Instead, the spatial rift had transported him to the even more dangerous Ancient God's Land. During those hundred years, his life had been nothing short of hell.
Every day, he faced pursuit from the experts of the Ancient God's Land and had to constantly fend off attacks from wandering souls.
Lin Che had survived by sheer luck. In order to return to his own world, he decided to cultivate through slaughter in that place.
Only after enduring countless hardships and breaking through to the Soul Formation Stage did he manage to intimidate the experts of the Ancient God's Land and leave that damned place.
Over the past hundred years, seas had turned to fields, and all things had changed.
How many hundred years could a person have in a lifetime?!
"Who goes there? How dare you trespass into my Heng Yue Sect?!"
As several Core Formation cultivators appeared in the sky, every disciple of the Heng Yue Sect stared gravely at Lin Che as though facing a great enemy. Many of them drew their immortal swords and aimed them at him.
Lin Che landed steadily on the ground, one hand held behind his back. His gaze was calm as he slowly said, "Elder Liu Wenju, Elder Li Qinghou, it has been a long time."
Hearing him call out their names, the two white-haired elders at the front were stunned. Subtle changes appeared on their aged faces.
Yet no matter how hard they tried to recall, they had never seen Lin Che before. Naturally, they had no idea who he was.
Elder Liu Wenju spoke in an unfriendly tone. "Fellow Daoist, who are you, and why do you know this old man?"
Lin Che waved his right hand. In an instant, a jade plaque entirely blue in color silently appeared in the air. On its surface was engraved a single large character: Lin.
The moment they saw the jade plaque, all the Heng Yue Sect elders froze. They rubbed their eyes in disbelief, because in the past thousand years, the sect had only ever given such a plaque to one disciple.
That disciple was Lin Che, the talented disciple who had supposedly died a hundred years ago!
"Y-You really are... Lin Che!"
Liu Wenju lifted his head in shock, staring at Lin Che before him in utter disbelief.
Liu Wenju and the others were deeply shaken. They could not believe that Lin Che, the Heng Yue Sect's talented disciple who had vanished for a hundred years, had actually returned.
Huang Long Zhenren, the sect master, looked at Lin Che as memories of the past flooded into his mind. His entire body trembled uncontrollably as he said, "It really is you, Che'er?!"
"After a hundred years, could it be that Master has already forgotten me?"
Lin Che's voice was cold, chilling as ten-thousand-year ice. A hundred years of slaughter had exhausted his spiritual strength, and after leaving that strange space, his hair had turned white overnight.
Huang Long Zhenren walked before Lin Che in disbelief. Scenes from the past replayed in his mind like a film. He could not believe that the disciple he had once cared about most had returned to his side in such a manner.
"It really is you... Che'er..."
Huang Long Zhenren's heart was filled with pain. He tightly gripped Lin Che's shoulders, tears seeming to gather in the corners of his eyes as his voice choked. "Che'er, where have you been all these years? Since you were still alive, why didn't you return to the Heng Yue Sect?!"
