The night was torn to shreds by the firelight.
The wall of fierce fire oil eventually died down, leaving behind scorched debris and still-smoking corpses. But the barbarians' assault didn't stop; instead, it grew more frenzied and bizarre.
They no longer swarmed the city like ants, but instead broke into smaller units.
Hundreds of agile wolf cavalry, using grappling hooks and claws, clung to the shadows of the city walls like geckos, climbing upwards. Their movements were light, not even a sound was made.
"Watch out for the shadows!"
Ji Ye roared, thrusting the iron spear in his hand sharply to the left, towards a patch of darkness.
"Pfft!"
The spear tip sank into flesh. A barbarian soldier, who had only just poked his head out, was impaled through the face. He fell without even a scream.
But the defense line was too long.
Although Black Stone County's walls had been heightened, they were still short-handed. Three hundred private soldiers and a few hundred village guards were spread across the four walls like sand scattered into the sea.
"Ah!"
A scream came from the right.
Two wolf cavalry had scaled the wall. Their curved sabers flashed like the wind, instantly cutting down three village guards. They didn't linger to fight, but headed straight for the winch, attempting to lower the drawbridge.
"Stop them!"
Pockmarked charged forward with a few of his brothers, but these wolf cavalry were clearly the elite of the elite. Their footwork was nimble, their attacks vicious, and within a few moves, they had Pockmarked and the others in dire straits.
"Get lost!"
Ji Ye had no choice but to abandon his command post and charge into the fray, dragging his spear.
He didn't use any fancy spear techniques, just simple sweeps and chops.
The eighty-jin iron spear, empowered by triple brute force, carried a whistling wind pressure with every strike. Though the two wolf cavalry were agile, they had nowhere to dodge under such sweeping, heavy blows.
"Clang!"
One wolf cavalry attempted to block with his curved saber.
The saber snapped. The iron spear struck his shoulder, and half his body instantly collapsed.
The other, seeing the situation was bad and wanting to escape, was hit in the lower back by the tail sweep of Ji Ye's spear. His spine broke, and he collapsed like a dead dog.
But the moment Ji Ye dealt with these two, more wolf cavalry climbed up.
Ten, twenty, fifty...
The city wall instantly turned into a battlefield of carnage.
The original formation was broken, the bows and crossbows lost their effectiveness, leaving only the most primitive close-quarters combat.
"Hold the line! Don't retreat!"
Ji Ye was covered in blood. The iron spear in his hand was already so slick with gore he could barely hold it. He simply tore off a strip of his clothing and tightly wrapped it around the spear shaft.
He was like a firefighter, rushing wherever the danger was greatest.
Under his spear, he was unmatched.
But human strength had its limits.
His breathing grew heavy, his lungs felt like they were burning. Though his Bone Forging Realm physique was powerful, it couldn't withstand such high-intensity, sustained bursts.
"Swoosh!"
A cold arrow shot from the darkness, grazing Ji Ye's cheek and tearing away a piece of flesh.
Ji Ye's internal alarm bells rang.
Sharpshooters!
Although the Organ Tempering realm commander hadn't personally attacked the city, he had sent his sharpshooters among the wolf cavalry to pick off targets.
This was the most deadly threat.
"Boss! The east side is about to fall!"
A private soldier, covered in blood, ran over crying, "A centurion got up here, he's too fierce, the brothers can't hold him off!"
Ji Ye turned his head to look.
On the eastern section of the city wall, a barbarian brute clad in heavy armor and wielding a pair of axes was slaughtering wantonly. Every swing of his axes brought a bloody storm, and more than a dozen brothers had already fallen at his feet.
Another Bone Forging Realm expert!
The barbarians had too deep a foundation. Experts of this level were rare in Da Liang County City, yet here they were merely centurions in the barbarian army.
"I'll go."
Ji Ye spat out a mouthful of blood, his eyes sharp and cold.
He couldn't retreat. He was the soul of this city wall; if he took one step back, the entire line would collapse.
Ji Ye gripped his spear and strode towards the eastern section.
The barbarian centurion also saw Ji Ye, a glint of bloodlust flashing in his eyes. He licked his lips, clanged his axes together, producing a piercing metallic sound, as if in provocation.
The two charged at each other through the piles of corpses.
There were no wasted words.
"Kill!"
The Centurion leaped high, his twin axes descending like Mount Tai. The blow was powerful and heavy, splitting the very air with ripples.
Ji Ye didn't meet it head-on.
His stamina was too depleted; a direct confrontation would only leave him vulnerable.
The moment the axes fell, Ji Ye suddenly slipped, tumbling sideways as if he had lost his footing.
A flicker of joy appeared in the Centurion's eyes. His axes continued their descent, smashing into the castle bricks with a shower of sparks and flying debris.
In that instant.
Ji Ye, who had "slipped," used his falling posture to thrust his iron spear upward like a venomous dragon emerging from its cave, skimming the ground!
The spear thrust was incredibly insidious and tricky.
It aimed straight for the lower body.
"Pfft!"
The spear tip pierced the Centurion's groin unimpeded, sinking deep into his abdomen.
"Aaaargh--!!!"
The Centurion let out an ear-splitting scream, his face instantly turning a liverish color, his eyes bulging.
Pain like this was enough to break any tough man.
Ji Ye showed no mercy, gripping the spear shaft with both hands and violently flicking it upward.
"Up!"
Triple Brute Force erupted.
The two-hundred-plus-pound warrior was lifted by the spear, hanging from its tip, flailing as blood poured down like a waterfall.
The scene was utterly shocking.
The Barbarian soldiers and defenders fighting around them involuntarily stopped their actions.
Ji Ye planted his spear, letting the Centurion's corpse hang from it, his gaze like lightning as he swept across the battlefield.
"Who else wants a try?"
His voice was hoarse but carried a chilling madness.
The Barbarian soldiers were afraid.
They weren't afraid of death, but they were afraid of dying like this.
"Retreat... Retreat!"
Someone shouted, and the remaining Wolf Cavalry began to pull back, sliding down the city wall using ropes.
This wave of attack had once again been repelled.
Ji Ye released his grip, letting the corpse slide off.
He sat down in a pool of blood, gasping for air, his fingers trembling so much he could barely hold his spear.
Did I win?
He looked up towards the distant Barbarian camp.
The torches there still burned brightly, and the sound of war drums had not ceased.
This was just the appetizer.
The true despair was yet to come.
And his stamina was almost completely gone.
"System..."
Ji Ye silently chanted in his mind.
"If this is your test, then I..."
"Will see it through to the end."
