Background / History
Recruitment attempt outside Kikyo Castle
Orochimaru contacts Nara Kaikei and Yakushi Nonō through a snake-delivered scroll written in Root’s encrypted script. Acting on information supplied by Danzō, he invites them to the forest outside Kikyo Castle and offers Kaikei a place under his command. Kaikei rejects the offer, contrasting Orochimaru’s ambition to transform the era with his own preference for a comfortable life 74.
Although Danzō’s assignment involves killing Kaikei, Orochimaru refuses to follow that objective. He considers a fatal confrontation with the Nara and allied Pig Deer Butterfly clans politically unwise for someone seeking the Fourth Hokage’s position. Instead, he treats the attack as a lesson that will still justify collecting Danzō’s reward 75.
Kaikei and Nonō counter him with clones, ink creatures, poison, and shadow techniques. Orochimaru repeatedly sheds damaged bodies and disrupts shadow restraints with summoned snakes. Kaikei eventually stops attacking after recognizing that he cannot decisively finish him 75 76.
Iwagakure front and human experimentation
As supreme commander of Konoha’s Iwagakure front, Orochimaru assigns missions, manages intelligence, and directs the defense against Han, the Five-Tails’ jinchūriki. He suspends Kaikei’s supply-depot raids when reliable targets run out and immediately calls Kaikei into action when Han attacks 126 129.
His command conceals experiments on Konoha’s wounded ninja. Kaikei confronts him after noticing that severely injured patients are disappearing from the camp. Orochimaru defends his conduct by describing permanently disabled soldiers as burdens on the village’s limited resources 126. Kaikei later threatens to expose his human experiments and research into Hashirama’s cells, forcing him to share Explosion Release and Ibunri Smoke Transformation data 133.
Orochimaru fights Han using snake swarms and Earth Style substitutions. When the Five-Tails fully manifests, he attempts to retain it as a strategic asset while also viewing Han as valuable experimental material. His giant snakes fail to contain the beast, leaving him injured until Kaikei’s return ends its pursuit 146 150. He subsequently yields custody of Han to Kaikei 161.
Loss of his hands and Hokage candidacy
Before the Fourth Hokage election, Orochimaru withdraws from public life. An Interrogation Department shinobi describes him as “something wearing human skin,” prompting Kaikei to suspect that forbidden research has affected his soul 348.
Tsunade confronts him over experiments on village comrades and the desecration of her grandfather Hashirama’s remains. Orochimaru becomes fascinated by her Wood Release and deliberately cuts himself to exploit her hemophobia. Kaikei intervenes, defeats Manda, and immobilizes Orochimaru before severing both forearms 353 354 356 358.
The injury destroys his immediate election prospects and nearly ends his research ambitions. In despair, he conceives the possibility of transferring his soul into another body 359 364. Tsunade severs their ties and reports his crimes to Hiruzen, who admits that wartime necessity and affection for his disciple had led him to overlook them 360 361.
Orochimaru leaves Konoha and establishes secret bases. Although village insiders regard him as a deserter, Konoha does not publicly classify him as an S-Rank rogue ninja or issue a wanted order 388 591.
Black Zetsu alliance and bodily reconstruction
After more than a year of moving between hiding places, Orochimaru establishes a foothold in the Land of Fields. Black Zetsu and White Zetsu Tobi approach him with experimental specimens and the promise of Madara’s secret techniques. His interest in Yin-Yang Release and advanced ninjutsu overcomes enough of his suspicion to permit a temporary alliance 562 564.
Black Zetsu supplies Madara’s research materials and helps correct flaws in Orochimaru’s soul-transfer technique that would otherwise damage his soul. Orochimaru eventually chooses an artificial clone rather than an abducted person as his vessel, completing his first successful transfer in Konoha Year 54 568.
The engineered body gives him Wood Release and vastly improved Chakra reserves. He tests it against his collaborators but abandons the attempt to capture them when they prove difficult to restrain. Rather than follow Black Zetsu’s demand for an immediate attack on Konoha to recover the Rinnegan, he returns to Ryūchi Cave for Sage training 569 570 571.
Sage confrontation and imprisonment
Years after leaving Konoha, Orochimaru sends an invitation naming Kaikei and Tsunade. They instead travel directly to his Land of Fields laboratory, whose location Kaikei has tracked through a mark concealed in Orochimaru’s preserved severed hands 591 592 594.
Orochimaru reveals his mastered Sage Mode and attacks with the Kusanagi Sword, animated stone formations, poisonous flowering trees, and White Agitation Technique. Kaikei exploits the techniques’ range limits and Sage Mode’s five-minute duration 595 596 597 598.
Orochimaru then transforms into Yamata no Orochi and survives Kaikei’s Kirin. Kaikei seals his Chakra with Shadow String Technique, but Orochimaru escapes the captured body through soul transfer and unveils another body and a coffin 598 599. His confidence in reincarnated Madara collapses when Kaikei defeats and seals Madara 605.
Given the choice between execution and returning as a prisoner, Orochimaru accepts imprisonment. Kaikei marks him with Flying Thunder God, confiscates his laboratory and research, and destroys Tobi to prevent further exploitation 608 609. Orochimaru returns to Konoha, reunites with Hiruzen and the other Sannin, and is imprisoned for experimenting on village comrades. Hiruzen also attempts to reform him through lectures on the Will of Fire 611.
Appearance
- Pale, sickly complexion: His pallor becomes more pronounced during his frontline command 74 142.
- Serpentine features: Vertical pupils, a long snake-like tongue, and an unnaturally extendable neck 75 354 562.
- Long hair and wide sleeves: His sleeves conceal snakes used in combat 75 126.
- Distinctive eye shadow: An inborn feature, not evidence that he has entered Sage Mode 364 571.
- Biological prosthetics: After losing his hands, he is shown using five summoned venomous snakes as a flexible “True Snake Hand” 563.
- Replacement body: Initially resembles his original body but is paler; his later Sage appearance is markedly more inhuman and reptilian 569 595.
Personality
Orochimaru’s ambition centers on immortality, mastery of ninjutsu, and the acquisition of rare abilities. He seeks to become a force that reshapes his era, making Kaikei’s contented, unambitious lifestyle difficult for him to accept 74 568. Powerful bloodlines immediately attract his attention: Tsunade’s Wood Release becomes an object of covetous interest even while they are fighting 354.
His scientific curiosity has few ethical restraints. He experiments on village comrades, researches Hashirama’s remains, and treats captured ninja and White Zetsu as material rather than people 126 150 360 562. In battle, he exploits personal vulnerabilities as readily as technical weaknesses, including Tsunade’s fear of blood 354.
He is nevertheless pragmatic rather than indiscriminately reckless. He refuses Danzō’s assassination objective when it threatens his political interests, acknowledges that his enhanced body is insufficient to challenge Kaikei, and accepts imprisonment when resistance offers no realistic benefit 75 570 608. His overconfidence still produces costly mistakes, notably against the Five-Tails 150.
Abilities & Skills
Ninjutsu and forbidden-technique research
Orochimaru possesses talent in all seven Nature Transformations: water, fire, wind, earth, lightning, yin, and yang 568.
- Studies Smoke Transformation, Explosion Release, Hashirama Cells, and White Zetsu biology 106 133 562.
- Develops artificial bodies through cellular cloning and biological engineering 388 568 570.
- Expands his repertoire using Madara’s records supplied by Black Zetsu 568.
- Retains numerous hand-signless techniques even when unable to use his hands 358 563.
Snake techniques and summoning
His Ryūchi Cave summoning contract is a personal relationship rather than a village-wide resource 44.
- Shadow Snake Hand / Shadow Snake Hands: Sends snakes from his sleeves to bind, bite, or crush targets; demonstrated without hand seals 75 563.
- Shadow Multiple Snake Hands: Produces numerous snakes whose overlapping shadows help disrupt Kaikei’s Shadow Binding 76.
- All-Snake Manifestation Array: Releases a dense swarm of pythons to interfere with shadow techniques or support allied troops 76 146.
- Giant summons: Includes Manda and a Three-Headed Snake used against the Five-Tails 150 356.
- Reverse Summoning: Allows him to travel from his laboratory to Ryūchi Cave 570.
Great Snake Substitute Technique
Orochimaru sheds his damaged or restrained body and emerges from its mouth in a fresh body 76 126 355.
- Evades many attacks and discards accumulated bodily damage 76.
- Escapes chained Wood Release restraints while remotely controlling the Kusanagi Sword 355.
- Does not by itself remove Shadow Binding when the replacement occupies the same position 76.
- Becomes unusable when Kaikei prevents him from opening his mouth 358.
Soft Body Modification
His altered physiology grants extreme flexibility and strong resistance to blunt-force attacks 354.
- Extends his neck to escape restraints and approach opponents 354.
- Survives Tsunade’s powerful kick with intervening earth absorbing part of the impact 354.
- Provides no comparable protection against sharp cutting weapons 354.
- Still requires Chakra for extreme bodily extension; Chakra sealing disables these applications 599.
Earth Release
Earth techniques provide defensive substitutes and battlefield control.
- Earth Style: Earth Replacement: Avoids Han’s Boil Release punch and Kaikei’s attacks by substituting a dirt body 146 161.
- Swamp of the Underworld: Creates mud that hinders Kaikei’s wooden giant during their later confrontation 358.
- Uses underground movement to reposition or evade pursuit 354 598.
Soul transfer and reincarnation
The passages call Orochimaru’s body-transfer forbidden technique Impure World Reincarnation Technique. It transfers his spiritual body into another vessel; the same terminology is also used elsewhere for the reincarnation jutsu associated with Edo Madara 568 599 605 608.
- The initial body-transfer design destroys the target’s soul and takes control of the body 568.
- Draws on Yamanaka secret techniques and Spirit Transformation Technique 568.
- Black Zetsu’s revisions address the danger of damage to Orochimaru’s own soul 568.
- Its original limitations include intervals between transfers, weaker spiritual power in the vessel, and bodily rejection of the invading soul 570.
- Orochimaru ultimately uses a self-created clone and later escapes a sealed body as a soul 568 599.
Curse marks and survival backups
Orochimaru’s Heaven and Earth Curse Marks use his Sage Chakra; his earlier source of that Chakra is Jugo rather than completed Ryūchi Cave Sage training 571.
- Curse Binding Seal: Snake bites place formulas that immobilize a White Zetsu specimen 562.
- Creates backup bodies through curse marks, including one placed on Tobi 607.
- His backups make complete elimination exceptionally difficult, but he remains killable if every backup is found and destroyed 592 608.
- Tobi and Black Zetsu initially escape his control attempts through their own abilities 570.
Wood Release
His engineered clone combines Orochimaru’s own cells with Hashirama Cells and White Zetsu Cells, granting the bloodline ability he previously sought through research 570.
- Silent Killing Restraint Technique: Binds Black Zetsu and Tobi, although they escape through Mayfly Technique 569.
- Sage Art: Flower Tree World Descent: Produces flowering growth that releases poisonous pollen capable of knocking inhaling enemies unconscious 596 597.
- Kaikei counters its range by flying beyond the pollen cloud and later destroys the growth with Lava Release 597 598.
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode
With the White Snake Sage’s assistance, Orochimaru learns to absorb Natural Energy and synthesize Sage Chakra in his replacement body 571 595.
- Duration: Only five minutes during the battle with Kaikei and Tsunade 597.
- Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation: Reshapes the ground into a dense forest of attacking stone pillars 596.
- Sage Art: White Agitation Technique: Attacks Kaikei and Tsunade, who shelter behind Lava Release: Rubber Ball 598.
- Cannot reliably sense Kaikei during their meeting, despite his enhanced abilities 594 595.
- Many attacks remain ineffective against opponents flying outside their range 596 597.
Eight Branches Technique
This S-Rank forbidden jutsu transforms him into Yamata no Orochi, a white giant serpent with eight heads and eight tails 598 599.
- Each head is comparable in size to Manda 598.
- Survives Kaikei’s Kirin, allowing Orochimaru to emerge from a serpent’s mouth 598.
- Shadow String Technique seals his Chakra and severs his connection to the transformation 599.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Original Kusanagi Sword — Exceptionally sharp; controlled remotely through Sky Sword and capable of extending its blade. Lost after Kaikei applies a Contract Seal 75 570 596.
- Replacement Kusanagi Sword — Another weapon of the same category, not the recovered original. Lacks the original blade’s free-extension ability; Orochimaru swallows it after recalling it to avoid another seizure 570 596.
- Secret laboratories — Bases in the Land of Fire and Land of Fields support cloning, forbidden-technique development, and specimen containment. The Land of Fields laboratory is later confiscated by Kaikei 388 568 609.
- Madara’s ninjutsu materials — Supplied from backup bases by Black Zetsu to expand his knowledge 568.
- Preserved severed hands — Kept after Kaikei burns them; an embedded Shadow Stream Blade mark allows Kaikei to track the location of his base 592.
Relationships
- Nara Kaikei — Rejected recruit, wartime subordinate, rival researcher, and principal adversary. Severs Orochimaru’s hands, later defeats his Sage form, and compels his return as a prisoner 74 133 358 608.
- Tsunade — Longtime teammate who regards his overall ability as the strongest among the Sannin. Cuts ties over his experiments and the desecration of Hashirama’s remains, though later still shows concern for him 353 360 599.
