Zhou Hai serves as the head of the Heaven Defying Sect's Pillars of Cultivation Pavilion, where he assesses disciples, teaches foundational cultivation subjects, and provides Dao discussion to outer sect members. He is first brought to examine Ning Ri after Elder Xun Zang identifies the applicant as unusually suited to the sect. 2 3

After examining Ning Ri's blocked acupoints and incomplete spiritual roots, Zhou Hai concludes that the impurities trapping spiritual energy within Ning Ri's body enable his slow cultivation. He names this unprecedented physique the “Innate Cultivation Sacred Body” and personally tests Ning Ri's learning ability with the Spirit Absorption Technique. 3

Ning Ri's ability to master and develop an unrecorded route of the technique shocks Zhou Hai.
