As a transcendent being, he merely needed mass-energy to exist in three-dimensional spacetime. Its state did not matter at all. It could be energy, matter, or even just a pile of Virtual Particles."

Everyone thought, That's right. They could annihilate three-dimensional matter in all sorts of ways, but that merely converted matter into energy.
