Breakthrough

A cultivator at the peak of the True Qi Stage must undergo the Foundation Establishment Tribulation. Success transforms True Qi into True Essence and grants the cultivator a lifespan of roughly three hundred years 165.

• Foundation Establishment Pills are a major breakthrough resource. Cultivators with a Root Bone of four or five may succeed without one, although the pill shortens the process; for Lu Qingfeng’s former Root Bone of one, succeeding without a pill was considered practically impossible 103.
• Bright Sun Pills can aid peak True Qi cultivators and provide a chance of breaking through, though they are not guaranteed to succeed 178.
• The tribulation manifests as a large-scale thunder calamity. During Lu Qingfeng’s breakthrough, storm clouds spread across tens of miles and their pressure was felt across three hundred miles 165.

Foundation Establishment converts a cultivator’s True Qi into True Essence, providing a far higher level of power than the Postnatal Realm 165.

• Foundation Establishment cultivators can replenish True Essence by refining Spirit Stones during or after battle 167.
• Their True Essence remains limited at the beginning of the realm; reaching Foundation Establishment is only the first step toward the later Liquid Condensation stage 165.

Communion with Heaven and Earth

Foundation Establishment cultivators can begin drawing upon the power of heaven and earth, marking the decisive distinction between powerful Postnatal cultivators and true Immortal Dao practitioners 43.

• Their techniques possess destructive power far beyond ordinary True Qi cultivators.
• An unnamed Foundation Establishment cultivator of the Ghost Spirit Sect used ghosts and Yin Fire to melt nearly an entire squad of one hundred puppets into molten iron 43.
• Even so, coordinated attacks can still damage a Foundation Establishment cultivator’s artifacts; eight surviving puppets broke the Ghost Spirit Sect cultivator’s Yin Fire formation and shattered his black banner 43.

Limitations

Foundation Establishment cultivators remain far below the Spirit Void Stage. Spirit Void cultivators can absorb Heaven and Earth Spiritual Energy through their pores at all times, continuously replenish True Essence, and possess strength described as overwhelmingly greater than that of Foundation Establishment cultivators 84.

• Advancement depends on cultivation resources, spiritual herbs, pills, cultivation methods, and personal comprehension.
• A weak Root Bone remains a major obstacle even after reaching Foundation Establishment 114.
• High-grade cultivation methods provide a superior foundation for later breakthroughs; low-grade methods leave cultivators at a disadvantage when attempting higher realms 290.
