Layout and Appearance

• House tables: Four long tables stretch almost from the entrance to the Teachers’ Table, seating students by House 122.
• Teachers’ Table: A fifth long table stands on a raised platform at the front, with the professors facing the students. It is also called the High Table or Faculty Table 122 136 257 556.
• Tableware: Shining gold plates and goblets are laid out for meals 122 257.
• Lighting: Thousands of candles float above the tables, illuminating students and visiting ghosts 122 318.
• Windows and flooring: Tall windows look outside; the floor is stone 318 675.
• Gryffindor seating: The Gryffindor table is described at the far end of the hall, where Harry notices greater warmth, possibly because of a nearby fireplace 257.

Magical Features

Enchanted Ceiling

• The ceiling displays a magical sky: glittering stars at night, a starless black sky matching the conditions outside, or soft pale blue during the day 122 318 702.
• Dumbledore transforms its stars into a moving presentation of Harry’s Hogwarts experiences and victory over Voldemort, then restores the ordinary starfield 556.

Changing Decorations

• After overturning the House Cup result, Dumbledore changes the hanging green banners to scarlet and the silver banners to gold with a clap. An enormous Slytherin serpent is replaced by a Gryffindor lion 100.
• A silver star placed atop a Christmas tree lights up and casts a soft glow throughout the hall 507.

Feast Service

• Food appears instantly on the tables when the feast begins, filling previously empty plates 257 319 649.
• Hogwarts’ house-elves prepare the meals. During the Triwizard Tournament, they work overtime to accommodate the tastes of foreign students 261.
• Dumbledore publicly thanks the house-elves for the Halloween food and decorations and encourages students to thank them personally 650.

Uses

Meals and Social Gatherings

• Students gather for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, exchanging news, discussing lessons, and making plans 650 675 701.
• House seating is not completely rigid: Anne joins Harry at the Gryffindor table, and Pabbie leaves the Faculty Table to sit with them 557.
• During a Christmas holiday in Harry’s earlier Hogwarts years, the four House tables are merged into one because so few students remain 506.

Sorting and School Announcements

• The annual Sorting Ceremony is held before the start-of-term feast, a tradition described as dating back to Hogwarts’ founding 257.
• First-years line up before the staff table. McGonagall places the Sorting Hat on a stool and calls students forward by name 318 406.

Examinations and Assembly

• For O.W.L. examinations, the hall is rearranged with individual desks and a giant hourglass at the staff table. Students enter in groups divided by House and year 374.
• Students gather there before Harry leads them to a dueling training session in the Room of Requirement 456.
• Harry and Dumbledore discuss whether students should rest in the hall because some common rooms might be accessible to Death Eaters 448.
