Background / History
Dumbledore was a Gryffindor student who entered Hogwarts in his seventh year. During his youth, he formed a close relationship with Gellert Grindelwald; the pair sought the Deathly Hallows and planned a wizard-led revolution over Muggles. Dumbledore wanted the Resurrection Stone to restore his lost family, while Grindelwald intended to use it to create an Inferi army. 19 144 235
His family history was marked by tragedy. He witnessed Muggle boys tormenting his sister Ariana, whose unstable magic later caused the death of their mother; his father was imprisoned in Azkaban after taking revenge on Ariana’s attackers. 144
Dumbledore ultimately opposed Grindelwald, defeated him in 1945, and imprisoned him in Nurmengard. His recognized achievements also include discovering the twelve uses of Fire Dragon blood and conducting major alchemical work with Nicolas Flamel. 13 47 120
As a younger Hogwarts staff member, Dumbledore brought Tom Riddle from Wool’s Orphanage to Hogwarts. He became suspicious when Riddle blamed Myrtle’s death on Hagrid’s Acromantula, recognizing that the reported cause of death did not match Acromantula venom. 130 378
Appearance
Dumbledore is an elderly wizard with several-feet-long hair and beard, half-moon spectacles, a hooked nose, and bright blue eyes. 174 260
- Long white hair and beard. 174
- Half-moon spectacles. 21 46
- Sharp, hooked nose. 174
- Often wears star-and-moon-patterned robes or pajamas. 162 246
- His office is guarded by a Stone Beast and houses portraits of former headmasters, the Sorting Hat, and Fawkes. 130 162
Personality
Dumbledore is calm, observant, and habitually indirect. He prefers students to call him “Professor” rather than “Headmaster,” speaks in riddles often enough for Harry to doubt whether he is genuinely favored, and frequently uses humor to soften grave conversations. 46 119 130
He is pragmatic about magic and morality. While he does not advocate Dark Arts under ordinary circumstances, he believes fighting ruthless Dark Wizards requires more than purely “white” magic, and he openly acknowledges using minor curses himself. 130
He places considerable trust in Harry’s judgment and power, sometimes to the concern of Sirius, Snape, Lupin, and others. He repeatedly presents Harry with dangerous choices—such as the Triwizard Tournament and probing Voldemort’s Horcruxes through Ancient Magic—while allowing Harry to decide. 260 376
