Background / History
Recruitment of Chen Chu
Xue Ye first receives Chen Chu at the Heaven Dou Palace after hearing favorable reports from Zhi Lin and Meng Shenji. Impressed by his young age, Soul Emperor cultivation, and courteous behavior, he offers him an Earl’s title and a Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone. Chen Chu’s reluctance to accept immediately strengthens Xue Ye’s impression that he is prudent rather than rash 15.
At the banquet, Xue Ye publicly introduces Chen Chu as a Heaven Dou Royal Academy teacher and newly appointed Imperial Earl. He presents the reward as encouragement for talented young Soul Masters to serve the empire, hoping to recruit future protectors of the royal family 16.

Evil Soul Master Investigation
During the banquet, Ning Fengzhi informs Xue Ye that Sword Douluo has detected unusually strong Blood Fiend Energy in Chen Chu. Xue Ye takes the warning seriously: losing a prodigy would be regrettable, but retaining an Evil Soul Master near the throne would be dangerous. He agrees to question Chen Chu privately rather than alarm the guests 16.
In the Imperial Study, Chen Chu’s oath upon his Martial Soul reduces Xue Ye’s doubts, although Sword Douluo remains unconvinced. Chen Chu then reveals the Slaughter God’s Domain, explaining the source of his killing aura and clearing the accusation. Xue Ye dismisses him to rest and confirms that the promised Soul Bone will be delivered the following day 17.
Military Patronage and Court Politics
After Chen Chu becomes a Soul Sage and resigns from teaching, Xue Ye summons him to discuss a new position. He grants him command of the Capital’s Defense; Chen Chu promises to become a Titled Douluo within five years and protect Heaven Dou’s stability. The appointment also counterbalances the Crown Prince’s influence, provoking Qian Renxue’s anger 37 38.
Xue Ye later dispatches Chen Chu to escort supplies against the Star Luo threat on the Pamir Plateau. He approves a force of three Imperial Guard divisions—30,000 soldiers, half recruits and half elites—and emphasizes defense rather than a direct confrontation. His final instruction places Chen Chu’s survival above winning the campaign 42 43.
Xue Ye also shields Chen Chu from court criticism over his pursuit of Tang Yuehua, burning impeachment memorials accusing him of lacking virtue and attempting coercion. He had intended to marry his youngest daughter, Xue Ke, to Chen Chu to secure his attachment to the empire, but abandons that plan once Chen Chu’s relationship with Tang Yuehua becomes established. He warns Xue Xing not to damage imperial unity by interfering 42 72.
Declining Health and Succession Doubts
Xue Ye’s failing health is repeatedly marked by coughing, exhaustion, and difficulty managing state affairs. Qian Renxue, disguised as Crown Prince Xue Qinghe, has been administering preparations that gradually weaken him without leaving an obvious trace. His suspicions also grow after she secretly eliminates two princes of the Xue family 37 38 43 61.
When Chen Chu returns victorious, he questions Xue Ye’s worsening condition and suggests that his daily tonics may be responsible. Xue Ye admits that an imperial physician had warned him two years earlier that his body was too weak to accept tonics. Investigations by the Imperial Pharmacy and Shadow Guard found no identifiable problem, leaving him unwilling to believe that the heir he had nurtured would rebel when succession was already assured 61.
Chen Chu then urges him to appoint a Crown Prince, implicitly rejecting Qinghe and pointing toward Xue Beng. Xue Ye recognizes the implication and reacts grimly. Unknown to him, Chen Chu already knows that the real Xue Qinghe is dead and deliberately withholds that truth because Xue Ye’s death would enable Xue Beng’s accession 62.
As his condition deteriorates further, the imperial cabinet led by Xue Qinghe takes over state affairs. Xue Ye nevertheless supports Chen Chu’s establishment of four military camps around Heaven Dou City 78.
Exposure of the Impostor and Death
Once Qian Renxue’s identity is exposed, Xue Ye orders a nationwide manhunt for the false Crown Prince and Martial Soul Hall’s remaining agents. The discovery that his apparent son was an impostor devastates him and worsens his already critical condition. Xue Xing, Xue Beng, and the imperial physicians attend him at his deathbed 81.
Xue Ye dies with a will naming the Fourth Prince, Xue Beng, as emperor. His successor’s coronation proceeds under Chen Chu’s military protection. Chen Chu subsequently executes Xue Xing using fabricated treason evidence and becomes the power behind the new throne 82.
Appearance
- Pale and visibly exhausted: While working late in the Imperial Study, he presses his fingers to his temples and speaks with obvious fatigue 37.
- Cloudy eyes: His gaze turns questioning when Chen Chu challenges the Crown Prince’s medicinal preparations 61.
- Deathbed condition: His face is sallow, his breathing faint, and he lacks the strength even to open his eyes 81.
Personality
Xue Ye values talented Soul Masters and uses titles, resources, introductions, and military appointments to attract them. He particularly appreciates Chen Chu’s humility and caution, and initially assures him that the emperor and academy elders will help him navigate the capital rather than leave him to shoulder difficulties alone 15 16 37.
His generosity does not eliminate his concern for security: he agrees to investigate Chen Chu when warned of a possible Evil Soul Master. He also restrains Xue Xing’s personal resentment to preserve unity. Toward the Crown Prince, however, long-standing paternal trust complicates his suspicions; even after unsuccessful investigations into his illness, he struggles to accept that his chosen heir might harm him 16 61 72.
