The number made cold sweat stream down Gillard Perine's back. He immediately shouted, "Prepare for battle! Defensive formation!"
He had never imagined that the Geth possessed so many warships!
First of all, one thing was certain: the Geth had likely laid ambushes along every hyperspace route. The reason was simple. They were Mechanical Lifeforms, capable of remaining motionless on standby in some barren place forever, waiting until the enemy appeared.
The Geth had positioned Interdictors in the middle of every hyperspace route, then hidden large fleets in ambush there. This was a tactic intelligent lifeforms could never employ. First, the Imperial fleet had only a one-in-eight chance of choosing any particular route. Second, there was no way to know when the Imperial fleet would set out.
Therefore, the Geth fleet had likely been lying in wait here for months, and had probably arrived through warp travel. That produced no hyperspace fluctuations, preventing the Galactic Empire's hyperspace outposts from detecting them. At the same time, every warship shut down all engines, and every Geth unit entered standby mode, minimizing energy consumption as much as possible while they waited for that one-in-eight chance.
These places were in the middle of hyperspace routes, with nothing around them. No planets, no stars, no asteroids—only empty space. Nothing else! Not even a speck of cosmic dust could be found!
