During the Sith Wars thousands of years ago, Manaan had become a contested battlefield between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, and the planet had suffered severe devastation in the war.

However, after Bacta fluid was discovered, the less effective Kolto was abandoned, and the Republic's pharmaceutical companies shifted toward planets that produced Bacta fluid.

Thus, Manaan was abandoned, and the planet's native Selkath retreated into ancient cities deep beneath the ocean, cutting themselves off from the outside world.

Even now, countless relics from that war thousands of years ago could still be seen in the space around the planet. Wrecked warships, ruined space stations, and even corpses preserved intact in the vacuum, merely dried out and desiccated.

Because Manaan lay deep within the heart of the Republic's Inner Rim, and was not located along any major hyperspace route, transportation was inconvenient. No scrap merchants had ever come here.
