Background / History

Before its reforms, the Jie Sect was renowned for “Myriad Immortals Paying Homage,” its flourishing fortune, and its doctrine of fighting to seize a thread of life for all beings. Its disciples were expected to contend with heaven and danger rather than retreat, a culture that left outer disciples particularly vulnerable during the approaching Investiture of the Gods Tribulation 1 6 8.

The cost of this tradition became impossible to ignore after Zhang Feng led one hundred outer disciples on a mission and only thirteen returned. Further sect archives exposed repeated disasters in which outer disciples died in large numbers while the rewards went to their inner-sect leaders 2 6 7.

Chen Changsheng’s anonymously distributed Golden Ao Island Safety Code of Conduct and Anti-Fraud Guide for Jie Sect Disciples began changing the outer sect’s outlook. The guide promoted survival, risk awareness, and avoidance of unnecessary karmic entanglements; it rapidly became the most widely circulated manual among the outer disciples 5.

After Chen publicly challenged Daoist Duobao with the sect’s casualty records, Tongtian accepted the Dao of Survival as a legitimate Great Dao. He appointed Chen the Jie Sect’s Dao Protector and made the Safety Guidelines compulsory for every disciple 7 8 9.

Doctrine and Reforms

Dao of Survival

The reformed Jie Sect treats survival as the prerequisite to cultivation. Its doctrine does not reject contention entirely; instead, it emphasizes assessing whether a conflict is worth entering, preserving strength, and retaining a path of escape 8 9.

Calamity Aversion Department

Chen established the Calamity Aversion Department as the sect’s central survival and governance body. Its original mandate had three pillars 9:

Procedure as Dao

Following Shen Gongbao’s negotiation with the East Sea Dragon Clan, the Jie Sect adopted procedure, data collection, and standardized reports as tools for resolving conflict without immediate violence. The Dragon Clan’s completed risk-assessment form revealed that its apparent rebellion was a negotiation for rights and representation, not a war it could sustain 18 19.

The department’s founding procedural treasure is the General Principles of Primordial Era Procedures, described as the highest guiding principle for the sect’s future conduct 19.
