Background / History

Daoist Duobao emerged from seclusion as the Jie Sect’s senior Inner Sect disciple while the Outer Sect’s newly circulating survival guide was changing disciple behavior. He considered its advocacy of retreat a betrayal of the Jie Sect principle of “seizing a thread of life,” which he believed must be fought for and snatched rather than yielded. 5 6

Outraged, he confronted the Outer Sect on the Dharma Transmission Platform, demanding the guide’s author and threatening every distributor with ten years of wall-facing meditation at Repentance Cliff. Chen Changsheng answered the challenge without claiming authorship, presenting the Outer Sect’s casualty records: one hundred disciples had departed on a mission, while only thirteen survived. The question of what those deaths had achieved left Duobao unable to answer. 6

After leaving the platform, Duobao obtained and reviewed over a thousand years of Outer Sect mission records. The repeated losses—including missions where hundreds died for little or no gain—shook his Dao heart and forced him to question the Jie Sect’s traditional approach. 7

Following Sect Leader Tongtian’s recognition of Chen Changsheng’s Dao of Survival, Duobao publicly bowed to Chen and acknowledged him as the Jie Sect’s newly appointed Dao Protector. He accepted that his former understanding had been clouded and began supporting the sect’s new survival-centered order. 9

Duobao subsequently became a key executor of the Calamity Aversion Department’s reforms.
