Chapter 15: The Evil Wolf Attacks
Lin Le found a comfortable position on the bed and closed his eyes, beginning to calm his thoughts.
The best way to calm one's thoughts was through visualization, and Lin Le visualized a sky full of dark clouds, as black as ink.
Soon, Lin Le's mind was filled only with the vast, dark clouds. The first step of soul cultivation, entering a state of calm, was achieved.
Lin Le continued to relax his body and mind. Suddenly, a rumbling thunder sounded within the dark clouds, like a heartbeat, one sound per second.
No, that was his heartbeat!
A sudden stray thought jolted Lin Le out of his meditative state.
His previously faint breathing became heavy. Lin Le placed a hand on his chest and thought, 'My talent on the path of the Heavenly Gate is quite good; I entered a state of calm on the first try.'
According to the Thunderfire Soul Refining Diagram, it would take ordinary people years of arduous practice to enter such a state.
Lin Le glanced at the sky, feeling it was still early, and continued to cultivate the Thunderfire Soul Refining Diagram.
The state of calm was divided into four minor realms: Initial Zen, Second Zen, Third Zen, and Fourth Zen. He was currently only in Initial Zen. When the thunder sounded and he remained unmoved by a single thought, he would have entered Second Zen.
An hour later, Lin Le finally finished his last attempt at entering a state of calm. Mentally exhausted, he fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Lin Le stood in the sunlight, circulating Blood Qi using the Shoulder-Hunching Fist stances. During this process, the Yang Qi absorbed by his Yang Spiritual Root continuously merged with and was absorbed by the Blood Qi.
There was no longer any need to go to the White Ape Martial Arts School, as there was nothing there that could guide him.
He practiced like this for an entire day. In the evening, Lin Le continued to visualize the Thunderfire Soul Refining Diagram.
Lin Le lived like this for three days. On the fourth day, Lin Le frowned and went to a residence.
"You're saying Senior Brother Hou left?" Lin Le asked the man before him, sounding somewhat surprised.
The man nodded. "He left three or four days ago. He left in a hurry, as if there was something urgent."
"I see," Lin Le nodded and cupped his fists. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," the man replied with a nod.
Lin Le turned to leave, his brow deeply furrowed. He hadn't expected Hou Guang to slip away. Was it because of Song Shanhai?
That made sense. After all, he had overheard such a scandal. Given his cautious nature, it wasn't entirely surprising that he would flee this county town.
It just made things troublesome for him. Lin Le touched his flat money pouch; he didn't have much money left.
Fortunately, he had cultivated Blood Qi and was a Martial Master, so finding a job shouldn't be difficult.
However, compared to diligently working for a reward, Lin Le preferred another path: robbing and killing!
And settling some scores!
Lin Le looked at the Yamen in the distance, his eyes narrowing slightly. He was targeted by Wang Hu back then, and the petty official who handled his Travel Permit was definitely involved!
However, compared to a gang like Wang Hu's, that petty official had the Yamen backing him, so he would have to be more careful in his actions.
Lin Le returned home, only to find several burly men guarding his doorway.
Seeing him return, the men who had been squatting on the ground stood up and surrounded him.
"Evil Wolf Gang?" Lin Le asked.
"Asking that right off the bat, it looks like Wang Hu's death has something to do with you," a man with a buzz cut emerged from behind, looking at Lin Le calmly.
Lin Le chuckled. "So what? Do you dare to kill me on the street?"
The buzz-cut man nodded slightly. "You have courage. I really wouldn't dare kill you on the street, but what if I reported you to the Yamen for murder?"
Lin Le gestured. "Feel free. The Yamen is right there, go ahead."
The buzz-cut man narrowed his eyes, unsure if Lin Le had genuine backing or was just bluffing.
He suddenly smiled. "Little brother, I had no knowledge of what that Wang Hu did. Now that he intended to do something improper to you and died by your hand, it can be considered a deserved end. How about this, I'll give you fifty taels, and we'll let this matter drop. From now on, we'll mind our own business."
"Add a bit more, how about sixty-six taels? It sounds more pleasing to the ear," Lin Le said with his arms crossed.
The buzz-cut man narrowed his eyes. After a few moments of silence, he nodded. "Alright. Someone, give this young hero sixty-six taels of silver."
A man handed Lin Le six silver notes and six small silver ingots. Lin Le accepted them in front of the buzz-cut man.
"Then our business is settled," Lin Le said after putting away the money. "If there's nothing else, you can leave. I need to take a nap."
"Fine," the buzz-cut man said, leading his men away.
Lin Le watched the buzz-cut man leave, then lowered his head and smiled, his smile filled with coldness.
He knew these gangsters wouldn't believe in peace.
Lin Le turned and went to the blacksmith shop. He spent ten taels to buy a high-quality spear and another ten taels to buy an inner armor, which he put on.
With the remaining money, Lin Le went to the pharmacy and bought ten-year-old Blood Ginseng worth thirty-six taels. He ate it piece by piece right there in the shop, astonishing the young shop assistant.
Finally, he left the city.
After he left the city, one of the two followers tailing him immediately went to report.
Arriving at a small grove, Lin Le swiftly climbed a tree and sat on a thick branch, waiting quietly.
After a while, about twenty to thirty people approached, led by the buzz-cut man from earlier.
"You're here, Gang Leader Zhao," Lin Le said, glancing at the thugs pressing in. "What's the meaning of this? Didn't we settle things?"
Zhao Lang, the leader of the Evil Wolf Gang, narrowed his eyes at Lin Le. "Where are your reinforcements?"
Lin Le shrugged. "It's just me."
"Is that so?" Zhao Lang nodded slightly, wasting no more words. He waved his hand. "Kill him!"
"Yes!" The gang members roared in unison, brandishing their cleavers and wooden clubs as they charged at Lin Le.
Seeing this, Lin Le let out a furious yell: "Aaaargh!"
His voice boomed like thunder, echoing as if amplified. This was a technique from the White Ape Shoulder-Hunching Fist, designed to intimidate and break the enemy's spirit before the fight even began.
Under the force of his roar, the gang members were startled. It truly felt as if a demonic ape had come to life and was roaring in their ears.
Zhao Lang's pupils contracted. The White Ape Martial Arts School's battle cry technique—this kid had actually learned it. A flicker of apprehension rose in his heart.
Whoosh!
A whistling sound filled the air. As one gang member recovered from the startling cry, he saw the tip of a spear rapidly enlarging in his vision.
Pfft!
The sharp spearhead pierced directly through the gang member's throat.
Lin Le pulled the spear out and swept it sideways, slitting the throat of another gang member who hadn't reacted in time.
Blood sprayed, filling the air with a coppery scent.
This brutal scene caused the gang members, who had just snapped out of the shock of the battle cry, to freeze once more.
But while they froze, Lin Le did not. Moving with ape-like steps, Lin Le continued his assault on the gang members.
In just a few breaths, five or six of the thugs were already dead.
There's a saying that ancient armies would break if their casualties exceeded ten percent. While this might be an exaggeration, it held a kernel of truth.
Applied to these mere thugs, who lacked conviction, killing two or three would have been enough to make them fear and hesitate. Now, with four or five dead, it was enough to completely shatter their will to advance.
However, even if they had lost their nerve and were afraid to kill Lin Le, Lin Le still intended to kill them. After all, his Spiritual Root still needed their contributions.
But before Lin Le could kill the next one, a large saber came slashing down at him.
It was Zhao Lang who had made his move. He realized that if Lin Le continued his slaughter, his gang members would surely break and flee.
Lin Le swung his spear to block the saber, then used the rebound force to accelerate towards a gang member.
Pfft! Another gang member was impaled through the throat by Lin Le.
"You're asking for death!" Zhao Lang couldn't help but roar in fury.
