Chapter 22: Yellow Dog Fierce Wolf
Under the scorching sun, Lin Le bathed in the sunlight, sensing the Yang Qi generated within his body.
After a while, he shook his head and sighed, "There's been an improvement, but not much."
Killing those two constables had provided just enough killing karma to grow another lotus root, and Lin Le naturally chose to use it immediately.
However, after digesting it, Lin Le didn't feel a significant increase in his Yang Qi generation efficiency; it seemed to be less than a tenth.
He estimated that one lotus root wasn't enough to make his second Spiritual Root grow another segment.
Lin Le wasn't too surprised by this change. After all, it took two lotus roots to grow the second segment of his Spiritual Root, so the third segment would surely require at least three lotus roots.
"Ideally three segments; if it's exponential, that'll be a headache," Lin Le muttered to himself.
If it were exponential, just for the last segment, he would need to kill twenty thousand and forty-eight hundred people to accumulate enough.
Even if he were to kill second-limit Martial Masters like Li Xingzhi, who were worth 3 points of killing karma, he would still need to kill over six thousand eight hundred of them.
Glancing at the four lotus seeds within the lotus flower, Lin Le stopped thinking about it and continued eastward.
As evening approached, he arrived at a village. Lin Le looked at the village, where not a wisp of smoke rose, and sighed.
Floods weren't truly terrifying. In this world with gods and immortals, powerful beings could resolve them in just three to four days.
What was terrifying were demon disasters.
With the earth veins in conflict, the Imperial Qi protecting this land was disrupted. The Yokai lurking in the deep mountains would eagerly emerge to consume the human body's great elixir.
Areas with fewer people had thinner Imperial Qi, offering less deterrence to Yokai, thus increasing the probability of demon disasters.
And this place had most likely suffered a disaster.
Lin Le walked into the village, becoming even more certain that it had fallen victim to a demon disaster.
Ruined walls, broken doors and windows, a scene of utter devastation.
Looking at the bloodstains splattered on the wall, Lin Le touched them. They were dry, indicating that at least two to three days had passed since the incident.
Lin Le found a relatively intact house and decided to stay there for the night.
Gathering some firewood and piling it in a corner, Lin Le started a fire, set up his pot, and began cultivating the Thunderfire Soul Refining Diagram.
In a distant forest, dozens of wild wolves lived as a large pack.
While ordinary wolves were savoring the two-legged sheep they had hunted a few days prior and hadn't finished yet, a wild wolf nearly seven feet long slowly stood up on a rock. Its gaze fixed on a rising plume of smoke in a certain direction, greediness appearing in its eyes as it let out a low growl:
"Awooo!"
After the low growl, the feeding wolves all dropped their food and looked towards that wolf.
The Alpha Wolf said nothing, merely jumped off the rock and walked in a certain direction. The wild wolves quietly spread out and followed the Alpha Wolf, leaving the area.
Just as Lin Le was quietly practicing the Thunderfire Soul Refining Diagram, he suddenly stopped, opened his eyes, and looked in one direction, saying coldly, "Come out! Don't force me to act."
There was no response.
Lin Le got up. After a few breaths, he suddenly lunged towards a certain spot.
The hidden "person" was startled and immediately retreated in a panic.
But Lin Le's speed was far greater than it. With a hawk claw grab, he immediately caught it.
Lin Le looked at the large yellow dog he held in his hand and examined it: "A dog spirit that just gained sentience?"
The large yellow dog before him looked much like an ordinary large yellow dog, except its fur was a bit sparse, giving the impression it had been injured and was just recovering.
However, the intelligence in its eyes was not something an ordinary dog possessed, so he estimated this large yellow dog had just gained sentience.
Such occurrences were common in disaster areas. Due to the suppression of Imperial Qi, the difficulty of domestic animals gaining sentience in populated areas was several times, or even more than ten times, higher than in the wild.
But with the weakening of Imperial Qi, some livestock with sufficient spiritual essence could immediately achieve sentience.
Despite holding a dog spirit, Lin Le didn't immediately kill it. Yokai, like humans, had both good and bad individuals.
"From this village?" Lin Le asked.
The large yellow dog understood human speech and immediately nodded.
"Have you eaten people?" Lin Le asked again.
The large yellow dog immediately shook its head.
Lin Le let it go because he didn't sense any malice in its gaze.
If there had been even a hint of malice, he would have crushed the large yellow dog to death instantly.
"Whine whine!" The large yellow dog let out a lingering whine.
It felt like if it had answered even one question incorrectly, it would have died.
"Where is your master?" Lin Le asked.
The large yellow dog paused, adopted a predatory stance, and then shook its head.
"Dead? Eaten by other Yokai?" Lin Le asked.
The large yellow dog nodded.
Lin Le pressed, "What do other yokai look like?"
The big yellow dog let out a whine.
Lin Le said, "Wolves?"
The big yellow dog nodded and whined a few more times.
"A wolf pack, I understand." Divine light flickered in Lin Le's eyes. "Will the most powerful ones be able to speak?"
The big yellow dog nodded again.
"Do they have any miraculous abilities?" Lin Le asked again. "Like summoning wind or breathing fire?"
The big yellow dog shook its head.
'A pack of wolves led by a speaking wolf, that's actually a bit troublesome.'
Lin Le licked his lips.
'But it's only a bit troublesome.'
When yokai reach the stages of sentience and speech, their strength is tied to their original form. If the original form is strong, then their strength is strong.
Just like that speaking wolf, if it wasn't a naturally born variant, if it were to fight the sentient fierce tiger he had encountered alone, the speaking wolf would have died nine times out of ten.
Another example was the big yellow dog in front of him. Although it had gained sentience, equivalent to a first-limit Martial Master, ordinary people with decent equipment could easily kill it.
Therefore, this wolf pack was similar to how he dealt with Zhao Lang and his followers back then.
Wolves and wolves, they really do have a connection!
Lin Le chuckled, then looked down at the big yellow dog. "Do you want to avenge your master?"
"Woof!" The big yellow dog barked without hesitation.
"Then take me to find them tomorrow," Lin Le said.
The big yellow dog suddenly started circling around Lin Le.
Lin Le mused, "You mean they're still nearby."
The big yellow dog nodded. It had originally come to warn Lin Le to be cautious, but it hadn't expected Lin Le to be so strong. His speed was no less than that of the Alpha Wolf back then.
"I know," Lin Le nodded. "Have you eaten?"
The big yellow dog nodded. Although the wolf pack had eaten all the meat in the village, they disdained to eat things like sweet potatoes and corn.
Being a dog, it could make do with them.
"Alright then," Lin Le said, returning to the house to eat the cooked meals.
The big yellow dog lay beside him, watching quietly, a little envious.
Although it could eat raw sweet potatoes and corn without issue, they weren't as fragrant and sweet as the cooked ones.
Seeing its expression, Lin Le also served it a bowl. "Eat up, it's not like we're short of this."
The big yellow dog barked gratefully, then lowered its head to eat.
After eating, Lin Le glanced at his divine ability Inner Scenery and found that the specks on the third lotus leaf had disappeared, replaced by a drop of colorless liquid.
Concentrated Divine Dew, formed.
Lin Le chose to use it.
As the liquid dripped down, Lin Le immediately felt his mind become clear, as if he had eaten mint.
Entering and exiting meditation again, a hint of joy appeared in Lin Le's eyes. He could now stay in the Third Zen for three more seconds. He recalled that the last time he entered the Third Zen, he had only managed to stay for three seconds.
